Although I love Porsches, I would recommend the Z for your father based on the profile you presented.

He is a layed back guy and will not even use half of the perfomance.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Father is looking to get a 996cab (2001-2002). I myself have two older porsche cars, so i though i would get some advice for the owners. First what are the good and bads of the car. He is a layed back guy and will not even use half of the perfomance. It will never be abused. His second choice is a 350z cab, (new). I like those cars but for me it is porsche all the way. Also does anyone no of a good one for sale. He is even iterested in a automatic. Thats how much he cares about performance.
Since he is not dead set on a 911..i agree with pl. Tell him to get a newer Boxster. He can get an '05 Boxster for around 40k. It will have a warranty and low miles. I assume, since he is also looking at the 350Z, he does not care/need rear seats, so the Boxster would do.

i understand warranty but if he gets it from a dealer you can get warranties. I am in the car audio business so i get to drive alot of cars. i think the 350z (for the money) is a great car. I would think as far as all around car though the 996 would be a large step up in quality and performance. This car will be a 5000 a yr car. The reason why he also is thinking about a 350z is because he thinks it looks good. He never drove either car.I told him to first drive both and see what he thinks. Then take it from there.

Get the 996 over the 350. 996 will always hold its value better than the 350.
There is so much more to owning a Porsche over a Nissan. 40 years of engineering just to start. I think your on the right track with going for a Porsche.
You can get a 2001 cab for less than 35k. Just tell him to drive a few and get the one he likes best. Whether it's a Nissan or a Porsche, he should get what he likes. Personally, I like my 996 and would never get a 350Z. I much prefer the older 240Zs I see from time to time.
Keep in mind that although you can get a Porsche cheap, they're still fairly expensive to maintain properly.
thanks Chris and Frank. I am shocked that porsche guys are going to tell me that he should get the 350z over the 996. I am not here to debate on what the front ends of cars look like here. I am here to get the possitives and negitives of the car. thanks for the answers

If you get a CPO car and that's a must as far as I'm concerned, then you will be spending in the mid $40s for a '01 cab with moderate miles in good condition. There's one in MD at Valley Motors.com with around 38K miles that's listed for $49K, but I imagine that they would take mid $40s. Although I don't doubt that you can buy an '01 cab with 60K+ miles in a private sale for $35K, it's not the path I'd recommend to your father. Porsches are notoriously expensive to maintain, and a warranty is a must IMO.
The advantages of the 996 over the Z are that the 996 has far better build quality and far superior performance. The advantages of the Z are that you can easily buy a new one for under $30K, and for that money you'll have a 4yr/50K warranty and a decent performer. As far as depreciation is concerned, I'd say both cars would be close. An '01 996 has already taken its biggest depreciation hit, but a CPOed car in excellent condition with moderate miles will likely cost you around $15K more that the Z. So in terms of dollars lost and not percentages, the depreciation of both cars should be similar.
Although I love Porsches, I would recommend the Z for your father based on the profile you presented. Based on your description of your father's driving style, he would not be taking advantage of what the 996 has to offer. In your father's case, buying a 996 would almost be like living with a very high maintenance drop dead gorgeous girl and never going to bed with her.
Maintaining the 911 is not a big deal. If he likes the 911, tell him to get one. It's a lot more car than the Z, plain and simple. It's ssems the common failure with the 911 may be the RMS as I just got one too, but again it's not a big deal, just an oil leak and a good excuse to go with a light weight flywheel! The Z car would probably cost zero to maintain and never leak oil, but it's not a Porsche. This is a case of you get what you pay for...................... A new 911 is about 3 times the cost of a new Z. Good luck with your search!
