was curious if it was the RMS leak...please say it aint so
Leading evidence: 'rms leak...please say it aint' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'rms leak...please say it aint' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace engine' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
RMS will not lead to having to replace the engine.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

No that stream is not from an RMS issue, i would guess coolant. That hose looks horrible. On another note, that bigger puddle on the right hand side of the 1st picture, that would be about where the RMS would leak. Don't know if that is a current puddle, or was there previously. Shoot a picture on the bottom of the engine, to the front of the oil pan right where the tranny and engine meet in the center of the car....then we can tell if the RMS is leaking.
Keep in mind this is a boxster, so the engine and tranny are flipped 180 degrees from a 996, but you can see where to look for oil. Right at the base of the engine where the tranny would bolt up is where you would notice drips and black sludge starting to build up.
Thanks guys I'm feeling alot better. The separate puddles are because I moved the car this morning...so it's the same leak. Yea i think it's the hose...it is pretty bad.
I'll take some more pics and post them in a minute.
Along with that coolant hose leaking. The hose is all of about 12 bucks. The RMS is all of about 17 bucks. The labor for the RMS seal really sucks. About 17 hours labor at a dealer. If you can find an independant shop, they might cut you a break. Porsche says you have to drop the engine and tranny together to do the seal, but we do them in a couple of hours with the engine in place and just pull the tranny (i make that sound easier than it is
).
I guess i shouldn't have said a couple of hours, i didn't mean that literally, lol. We charge in the neighborhood of 9-10 on a carrera, which is still far less than the dealer. I work for Stephen at Imagine Auto.
it was no big deal for me. The dealer took care of it. Did not cost me anything but some time. They never had the car for more then a day until the engine swap. Took it in on a Monday got it back Wednesday.
This could be a nice seque for Bob to jump in. BTW thanks for the clarification on the two hours. Hell, it would have been temptting for me to travel to KC to watch you guys do an RMS replacement in 2 hrs.
$43K for the GT3 motor. Do not worry about the RMS. The reason I got the engine was because it was covered and the block did not meet spec. RMS will not lead to having to replace the engine.
the C4S has the same block/RMS design as the 3.4 c2/4, 3.6 c2/4. your odds of getting another RMS leak in the c4s, unfortunately, would be the same. you would better chance of not getting an RMS leak with the gt3/TT/gt2, because of the different block, but they too are not immune.
thanks for the info guys...well looks like I'll just deal with it, it's not going to stop me from enjoying the p-car
. hopefully my aftermarket warranty will cover it.
RMS will not lead to having to replace the engine.
Unfortunately that's not necessarily an accurate statement. In a small minority of cases, an RMS leak will require a new engine for a permanent repair. There are lots of threads on this forum that cover this issue in detail.
fast1: you are correct. That is what happened to me. What I ment is that his engine will not let go as a result. If I had an out of warrenty 996 I would not buy a new engine to get rid of the leaks I had < quart every 800 miles.
Thanks for keeping me straight.
