Because I ran a search and there were a bunch of kits populated...

Did you just attach them to the rear of the headlight assembly and run a wire to the battery?

I was not informed by my sales rep that these were for "off-road use only".
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently decided to upgrade to hid headlights on my car to HID. After some research I opted for a Mccolloch HID kit purchased for ~$300. I performed the installation last night and the results are GREAT! Installtion took under 1/2 hour and consisted of removing the stock bulbs and replacing with the HID bulbs and ballasts - super easy. All of this fit within the stock headlight housing. I recommend this to anyone who likes HID lights but not the ~$1300 litronic price tag.
Sounds interesting... I was thinking about getting the litronic retrofit kit, so I was in the same boat as you. Any pictures of the lights? Where did you purchase them from?
I'll post photos when I have some time. They look great though - same as the lights that are on my Range Rover (6000k bi-Xenons). The only thing you don't get is the projector beam housing - but for $1000, I'll pass.
I ordered them on ebay - just do a search there. I'm saure there are planty of options.
I thought there wasn't any room in the headlight bay for the xenon kits? So much for the porsche shop I brought it to for advice... He said they tried it before, but there was no room for the ballasts. Did you just attach them to the rear of the headlight assembly and run a wire to the battery?
Actually, the entire assembly fit inside the headlight housing. I'm am a bit concerned with heat issues, so I might move the ballasts to the back of the lights. There is PLENTY of room back there....
"The only thing you don't get....."
Is the auto-leveling, the sharp low beam cutoff so your HID's don't blind oncoming drivers, and the ability for the entire low and high beam assembly to rotate upward about 2 degrees with high beams on, and back down when you switch to low beams.
I would recommend that you adjust your driver's side headlamp slightly toward the right so an oncoming driver doesn't get blinded and maybe get so riled that they chase you down or turn you in to the local police.
No, just from the other side of the fence, absolutely hate those oncoming aftermarket HIDs and usually accompanied by a set of driving lights aimed too high to boot. Urge to follow with a hammer or a can of black spray paint.
Anyone installing aftermarket HIDs should take a picture of the halogens shining against a wall and then convert to HID and then adjust so the top of the HID beam pattern is at the center of the old pattern. I'm quite sure the result would still yeild better light coverage than halogens.
And as I said, it would also help if the driver's side light were aimed slightly to the right side.
There's a good reason that the industry agreed to provide auto-leveling and a sharper "top" beam pattern cutoff "shade/mask".
Is the Mccolloch HID kit you bought from ebay a universal kit or is it specific to 996's? Because I ran a search and there were a bunch of kits populated... more info please! Thanks!
You need to get the one specific to you light housing. I think its a H7 bulb. I also heard that Hella was the way to go. How are the McCullooughs treating you?
Bobby
Whatever -
I am completely happy with the Mccollouch kit. Huge improvement over stock and as I mentioned earlier, VERY easy to install.
As for *possibly* bothering other drivers, glare guards are built into the headlight housing to begin with. I don't think my lights are any worse that that H2 with low beams that shine farther than my highs....
Besides, the $1400+ saved helps ease any feelings of guilt....
Did it come with install instructions? What type of wiring is required. Also what ebay member did you buy them from? Seems easier to buy from someone we know is legit.
Thanks
its is an old thread, but how do you install a 3rd party xenon upgrade kit on a 2002+ facelift version? I am also curious if anyone upgraded the foglight to xenon?
I recently did the HID upgrade on my car with the kit that Vortex sells. I bought the 8K bulb kit and could not be happier. The install is very easy and the result is great. The last several years all the cars I have owned had HID, so I really had to upgrade the 996. I am now very happy with how the lights look when on and the light that they produce. It is a night and day difference.
The only concern I have is that the headlights changed in 2002, and don't know if these kits are designed to fit the new facelifted 2002+ models... Patric, I believe you have a pre facelift..
Any facelift 996's with the kit installed? Vertex?
I hate these aftermarket HID kits that just swap out the bulbs. A true HID kit needs specially designed project-style lenses to focus the light on the road. These aftermarket kits will blind oncoming traffic and they are illegal. That said, it is your car and you do whatever you like but know that these aftermarket kits are a waste of money.
I live in Ohio and drive on alot of 2 lane country roads. These HID retrofits are a huge benefit in these conditions. The stock non-litronic lights are marginal at best. I have not had my lights on long, but I have not had any oncoming drivers flash me because of the brightness. Maybe my lights are just aimed in such a way that it is not offending oncoming drivers, but I have had no problems yet. I do agree that if you are being flashed you should readjust your lights to direct the light away from the oncoming traffic. As far as illegal, maybe we should discuss that with forum sponsor Vertex for selling them. I was not informed by my sales rep that these were for "off-road use only". Also, if we stopped installing anything on our cars that was technically illegal, then a whole buch of tint better be coming off.
