Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

probably, with significant mods. why go through the extra effort to put something on that is probably inferior to most aftermarket setups? unless of course somebody is giving it to you....
not as good a product as something else.....
the gt3 susp. pieces are obviously much better than your standard 996. if this was a good idea and it was cost effective, everybody would be doing it. much like the gt3 sway bars.
are you implying that the stock gt3 suspension is as good as a quality aftermarket ride height/damping adjustable aftermarket setup?
The purpose for adjustable damping is to "get it right" for the vehicle (and to some extent the driver). Once it's "right" you don't turn the dial again. I'd venture to say that the engineers got the GT-3 suspension "right". I'd also venture to say that must people don't have an educated guess about what they're really doing when they're turning those *****. Pretty much the same thing goes for adjustable ride height suspensions.
So yes, I'm stating that the GT-3 or similar OE suspension (x74, etc.) is as good or better than aftermarket pieces for most users.
i have the gt3 with motons on it - thus the extra suspension parts laying around. getting the 996 for the wife to start tracking, therefor the q. it is often debated on the gt2/3 forum but at the end of the day you step up to motons (over billstein and the like) bc you gain a sec or 2 (depending on the track) bc of the adjustability - but the stock is pretty damn good.
I believe could get billsteins and put on a 996 (myself) for about 2k, but the gt3 allows a little more stiffness, better dampening, and ride hight adjustability off the bat so it is a step up if it works - i would really enjoy hearing from someone who had done it!
and if i was not racing it i don't think i would have spent that kind of money on the gt3 and learned to drive the car better, but im trying to do bothat the same time.
THANKS FOR YOU HELP AND OPINIONS - MUCH APPRECIATED AND HOPE TO SEE MORE.
so which side are you on? in this post your saying the lap times are quicker with the aftermarket setup. make up your mind
why even bring up pss9's? everybody knows it's a street setup.
not to mention, are you really in a place to give suspension advice when you're running sport springs with I can only assume by your sig, stock shocks?
Yes, GT3 suspension pieces will fit on a standard 996. It is expensive and overkill unless you plan on using the car on the track. Yes, there are after market systems that can also make your 996 handle very well and of high quality. It all depends on your goals and budget.
Skea: Tell me you can not find someone in your town that can provide you with the perfect setup for your car. Use someone local. Having had 2002 C2 with PSS9s and now GT3 I will say they are both great on the right car with the right application. One can not compair because the GT3 is a very different car than any other 996. The PSS9 makes up for the lack of chassie stiffness by providing a stiffer ride. That was the biggest suprize to me when I moved to the GT3. I do not know that GT3 parts on a C2 would be the right "fit". Not because the GT3 part are inferior to aftermarket but that it might be a mismatch. Do not listen to any of us, go to someone that is accountable to you a local shop.
dog: the reson people I run with move to Moton's is for track and Autocross. It provides the ability to adjust for different tracks and conditions and tire compounds and such. They also have data aquisition to better understand what the changes are doing. I know of NO GT3 owner that has put PSS9 on their car.
do some of you guys even read before you post?
did i ever say you should put pss9's on a GT3? uhhh, no. as a matter of fact, i said something along the lines of the pss9's being a street setup. and it's very good at wha it's designed for. bilstein themsevles freely admit that it's an agressive street setup and not a race suspension, so i don't know why russ and roberga keep bringing up the pss9's.
you guys seem to be in agreement with what my original point was, but won't admit it. the factory GT3 is good stuff for a stock suspension. however, the aftermarket stuff is obviously superior with the exact points you guys are saying, and I quote... "Why, to go 2-3 seconds per lap faster of course" and "the reson people I run with move to Moton's is for track and Autocross. It provides the ability to adjust for different tracks and conditions and tire compounds and such".
now back to my original point, if what YOU guys are saying is true, then why spend a substantial amount of money trying to retrofit a factory GT3 suspension when the aftermarket provides a superior product designed specifically for your application?
and just so it doesn't get brought up a 3rd time, i'm not suggesting pss9's. i'm certainly not advocating that product for anyone who is looking for agressive lowering and significant track duty.
let's face it, just because the factory does something, doesn't necessarilly mean it's in interest of best performance. the factory has many more things to consider than just overall performance. if this were the not the case, the world of aftermarket wouldn't even exist.
Skea, I concur with the recommendation to go to an experienced race-oriented shop with practical experience with the appliction at hand (and I'm sure you've thought of this already), but short of that if you can determine that the suspension geometry is the same (or very close) and the weight distribution is very similar, then short of the mechanical fit hurdles (which is sounds like there aren't any) then I fail to see how it wouldn't be a great application, especially as you have the stuff laying around.
dog, I'm on the side of "that the stock gt3 suspension IS as good as a quality aftermarket ride height/damping adjustable aftermarket setup". The fact that there are race solutions out there that are better (than GT3) has nothing to do with my assertion that just because it's "quality" and "height/damping adjustable" doesn't make it better than the GT3 suspension. You can fill in the names you want- JIC, PSS9, H&R, etc., I just picked the most obvious one.
My car's suspension mods performed by the PO have little to do with my qualifications (or lack thereof
) to comment on chassis suspension.
The fact that I've had the rare privilege to pick the brains of people who've been academically trained to work as chassis engineers that have gone on to work for notable racecar Fab shops has more to do with it. Also having reasonable levels of firsthand (read hands-on) knowledge of track car fabrication makes my participation mostly useful IMHO. And there's lots of folks that have tons more experience than me here, that's why this is such an awesome forum.
ask Viperbob what he thinks of the stock porsche suspension, on any pcar? don't let the name fool you, he's been racing porsche's forever.
i'd say he's got a "little" suspension experience
i'm sure if the original poster pm'd him, he'd be happy to give an honest unbiased opinion on which direction he should go.
but hell, since he's got the GT3 parts laying around, i say go for it. it's free, sort of
i just wouldn't spend the money it would cost to go and get a gt3 suspension and do the retrofit.
