Agree with the paintless dent removal - they can do wonders, but if the paint is damaged, all you could do is try to polish it out as best as possible (absent a full scale repair).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Arghh - I got my first dent on the car today Some guy was using a trimmer at the side of the road and a small stone hit the car. It sounded bad but turned out to be a pretty small dent behind the driver door - looks annoying though. I talked to the guy (scary looking). He claimed he has no insurance. I have his and the proerty owners numbers but don't want to go too much trouble. Does anyone have any experiance from these situations/suggestions what to do? He's going to ask the property owner if he has home insurance that covers this. Is it expensive to fix a small dent? Does anyone know of any good places in Seattle that are good at paint jobs that you would recommend? Thanks for help

POST 2Original post

What I would do is look into paintless dent removal. Here in NY there are a few places that can remove dents without the need to repaint. Charge is about $125 to $175 per panel. What I do is wait till I get a few dents and then work out a deal for all of them.

POST 3Original post

Dent like door ding? If so then PDR will be $100 or less. Did the rock damage the paint? If so that could cost much more.

POST 4Original post

OUCH - I can still remember the day I put a dent in my 93 RS America with a 1/2 gallon glass bottle at the supermarket! (That was a dozen years ago!) Agree with the paintless dent removal - they can do wonders, but if the paint is damaged, all you could do is try to polish it out as best as possible (absent a full scale repair).

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, I guess it does look like a door ding. Unfortunately the rock did damage the paint. The dent doesn't really show on the picture. Thanks for all the feedback. Sounds like it should be less (even with paint) then I expected. I was worried it would be a lot more...

POST 6Original post

I had a similar sized ding. Cost my insurance company ~$600 to repair. Your cost is your deductible for Comp, typically $100. To avoid this hassle in the future; Do what many Porsche drivers do. Get it fixed, wash and wax your car, put it in the garage under a car cover, and never drive it while it depreciates!! Cheers/John

POST 7Original post

sucks man, sorry to hear! are you going to have to repaint the whole fender? I just got a similar ding like yours...

POST 8Original post

Seems hardly worth going to the insurance company for a claim. My insurance broker -- who is also a life long friend I went to college with -- would tell you not to file such a claim, as in the end you will pay for it. I have a little list of dings/scratches that will all be getting addressed early next spring. Separately, did I read that someone has a $100 deductible, interesting. Have you ever checked to see what your insurance is for a $500 or $1000 deductiable. In my case, it didn't make financial sense to have a $100 ded, as the increase in annual premium was greater than the $1,000.

POST 9Original post

The guy operating the trimmer is definitely responsible for paying for it, but it may not be worth your time to pursue it. $100 deductible on comprehensive? I'm with yetis, the increase in your premiums will cost you far more than you're saving with the low deductible!

POST 10Original post

I would just ask the guy to fork up the $$$ from his wallet, he should have insurance and since he doesn't he's pretty much liable for the damaged he caused. I would tell him to pick up the tab cash. It's either that or you can threaten to drag him into small claims court etc. etc. Tell him if it goes that route you'll make sure that this repair is done by the "stealer" = Big bucks or he can settle his loss outside of court. -Eli

POST 11Original post

Good chance it'll get thrown out of court, if it ever gets there. They guy didn't hit the car. A pebble from a trimer did. Could be a lost cause....

POST 12Original post

If the dent is reasonably small use a "dent doctor" or "dr. ding". They should be in your phone book.
