Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

I ordered a new starter from Pelican, but it was the wrong part number.
Leading evidence: 'wrong part number' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'wrong part number' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check every part number you order' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Of note, this cover CAN be replaced without locking timing, camshafts etc.

PDF attached is a technique that worked for my 2003 with tiptronic using quick jacks, your mileage may vary.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

BE SURE TO CROSS CHECK EVERY PART NUMBER YOU ORDER FOR YOUR VIN/YEAR/TRANSMISSION/ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

GOAL: Replace IMS/RMS/AOS and every other wear item I could touch without splitting engine.
Tools required for my engine + tiptronic removal:
QuickJack 5000TL portable lift — plus 1/4" spacers under the blocks (22-3/4" sump-to-floor)
Harbor Freight 1500 lb aluminum ATV/motorcycle lift, item 70835 — engine support under the sump
Low-profile floor jack — must collapse to ~5-3/4" to follow the ATV lift down; trans support
Wood cradle (~2") + hardwood block — shop-made, for the ATV lift saddle and the 722.6 case
Digital level — matching engine and trans angles before re-mating on install
10mm triple-square (XZN) bit — CV axle bolts
T25 Torx driver — side skirts, 10 per side
External Torx kit + T10-T45 Kit
7-24mm wrenches, sockets, extensions etc
5mm Allen — coolant drain plug
LN Engineering IMS installation tool kit — rented with the Pro Ceramic retrofit kit
Coolant vacuum fill/refill kit — used for the -25 inHg seal test and fill
Borescope — cylinder 6 wall inspection
Bluetooth OBD adapter + logging app — post-start diagnostics
PDF attached is a technique that worked for my 2003 with tiptronic using quick jacks, your mileage may vary. PDF did not cover re-install as it's just the reverse, minus alignment. Removal was easier than re-install.
Definitely need two people using this method.
max height...I actually had more clearance than necessary with my 2x jack setup but it helps when getting under the vehicle from the front.
draining fluids and showing you want several feet of clearance behind the 996.
immediately after removal
Factory IMS and lower half of RMS before R&R
Old bushings came out easily, new one's did not go in easily. If you have a press, don't make this $500 mistake.
Engine and Trans sat like this for three weeks while I ordered parts and got to work.
997 oil cooler/heat exchanger. It definitely fit without issue...debatable on the "upgrade portion."
After cleaning and re-install of newer parts
another angle before re-install
bolted up
I won't cover IMS as that's well documented in the LN kit. RMS is well documented on various YouTube channels. I found nuances between 996.2 engine serial numbers on the AOS setup, specifically the hose that runs to the right rear of the engine. Given that, I was hesitant to be too invasive on the first drop.
BE SURE TO CROSS CHECK EVERY PART NUMBER YOU ORDER FOR YOUR VIN/YEAR/TRANSMISSION/ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER. Pelican was great for price, but don't trust the green check mark saying it fits.
I'd read about y cable deterioration and voltage regulator issues on the alternator and had noticed fluctuations on my dash voltmeter. If you've dropped the engine, these jobs are easy. I ordered a new starter from Pelican, but it was the wrong part number. Good news, they took it back no issue and paid for return shipping. Cleaned up the old one and reinstalled prior to Y cable replacement.
You'll need to remove the alternator for the voltage regular replacement. Plenty of online info.
This side of the alternator faces front of vehicle
New vs Old voltage regulator, you can see the worn down portion of the contact on the top (old) regulator
The oil pump cover was exactly as described on YT channels, and the LN hex key was used to replace the factory unit. Factory key only showed light metallic wear, but was happy to replace with the upgraded unit. Of note, this cover CAN be replaced without locking timing, camshafts etc. Just the cover...not the assembly.
oil pump cover with gears. the gears can be removed from cover, note length of the center studs. Note the bolts are not all the same length, should be obvious upon removal where they reinstall (2x long, 1x larger diameter)
hex "key" or hex stud in lower left of the oil pump, below circular opening in crank pulley.
