Gel in the cooling system, I have had my tank replaced (3) times.....all under war.

I almost called Sunset to order one and use the DIY instructions.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have never smelled any coolant leak until ths morning and when I got to work, I had a flood coming from left rear. It appeared to be water, not green or gold, but temp was normal and light wasn't flashing. I gave it time to cool off and went back to investigate. The coolant tank was empty. I drove up the street and light started flashing in the first block. When I stopped, this time the flood was green. I put 3 quarts in to proper level and started home with it. The coolant spewed out all ove the back of the car, but the temperature never went up and light didn't flash. Home is 30 miles. I can't see any signs of a leak under the tank itself, but from underneath the pictures show a definite flow from up top. Has anyone experienced a cracked tank that leaked this way? Is there anything else up there that would leak down this path? No signs of leaking around the cap.
Apparently the '99 - '01 coolant tanks have a problem with leaking. Here is a thread about the cost of replacing the tank.

I need my glasses...aahhhgg.
Anyway, I had a leak in my 2001 C4, best bet would be to take it to the dealer. I think you're looking at around $600 out of warranty.
Good luck,
Rob
the same happened to me but not quite gushing out. if you are not experiencing hi temps then you can drive it home (i know this info is a little late) just keep a jug of distilled water in the car, just in case. it's an expansion tank, it not like a radiator hose is leaking. that would be much more urgent and may require a tow.
i just replaced mine over the weekend. it appears that it can affect all 996s including gt3s. the tricky bit is wiggling the tank out of the engine bay. verrrry tricky and actually less force is better, ask me how i know
.
Didn't turn out to be the coolant tank. I almost called Sunset to order one and use the DIY instructions. It just seemed like way too much water, even though I drove 30 miles home without getting hot. It was a bad water pump. I would not have expected it to go bad under 50k miles. The local shop I use charged me 700, including a new belt, since he had it off anyway, and a bathtub's worth of coolant. He drained it and refilled with porsche coolant, as I had to put some gas station variety in it to get home.
Keep any eye on you coolant.....
If you put common off the shelf stuff in with the factory stuff.
I was told at one point that if you mixed the factory stuff is would create some kind of
Gel in the cooling system, I have had my tank replaced (3) times.....all under war.
But at one point the factory coolant was not allowed into the country for some EPA BS.
And they put in some VW/Audi stuff that was supposed to be the same.
They ended up flushing my whole system with this special porsche parts washing fluid (Very expensive stuff from what I understand...) just to make sure they got all the other stuff out
due to this possible "Gel" problem. Not saying you will get it...but figured I had heard about it and would share the info.
My 2000 996CAB has 55K on the clock and had the coolant tank done at 40K and the water pump just 1 month ago. Don't know what it cost since my car is a CPO.
