Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My father-in-law is looking at a '98 Black/Black 996 with 56000km. Could someone give us advice as to what to check when buying a 996. Does a used 996 have any know problem areas? We will obviously have the local Porsche dealer do a PPI.

The first MY for the 996 was 1999, although these were in production and delivered in 1998, so that is where the confusion may be.

There has been much information written about the problems
a few
of the early year (which yours certainly seems to be) '99s experienced. Search through the archives. Make sure that these have all been fixed under warranty previously, as the four year/50,000 mile warranty has expired on your car.
Regards.

Don,
There was a 1998 996 for the ROW. We got our 996's as 1999 models.
It is a 1998 996. He is also looking at a Blue/Grey 1996 993 C4S. I am trying to talk him into the 4S. What do you folks think? Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!!
I'd get a 993 4s if both were in comparable condtion. Still love the classic 911 look and I do miss that "click" sound when you open a 911's door and the ergenomic mess that was the control lay-out of the 993's ,but then I do have weird tastes
I have a 2/98 build 996 that I have had no major issues with. Still running the original rear main seal and coolant reservoir. The other common issues (seatbelt light, sunroof rattles, etc) have already been fixed. I did purchase an extended warrany before the factory ran out, just some peace of mind.
Knocking on wood!!!
