Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just had a PPI done on a 996.2 I wanted to buy. The result was very surprising: No sign that the mileage is false. No sign the car was used on the track. But they looked inside the cylinders and found them badly scratched. Impossible to repair. The engine could fail in a few thousand miles and had to be replaced.
Probably I am lucky I had the PPI done. Or possibly - I can't help but fear - the specialists who did they inspection said to the owner "You're selling the car for how much??? I can pay you thousands more." And indeed, the car was priced 3 to 5 thousand less than I think it's worth ...
Is it plausible that a car with so few km - though about 11 years old - could have such bad cylinder damage??? It's an X51 by the way, if that makes any difference. And there is apparently a leak from the RMS area.
Instead of sorting through the usual BS nonsense you can right to all info about scored cylinders at Jake Rabys Flat 6 website.
Yes, it does happen to low mileage 3.6's. Pass on the car unless your willing to re-sleeve it.
It's very common on m96/97 engines. Glad you took the time to get this part done since it normally isn't covered under a regular PPI. The Turbo doesn't have this problem.
Surprising? Not here.
This one failed in the same way with 27K miles

Who did this PPI? They are to be commended for being so invasive and identifying this. I'd be willing to bet that they have attended one of my periods of instruction. We pound this into technician's heads in the PPI section of the class. So many don't listen, it would be nice to know that someone did and saved an engine.
Thanks for your post. It was actually my idea to look in the cylinders, though I got the idea from a Porsche dealer when I was considering PPIing another 996.
While I'd obviously heard of low milage IMS and RMS issues, I'd not hear of this. Or are they related?
This seems a bit weird...
Did he actually show you by camera or pics of the scratches? If a motor was that badly damaged, why would a mechanic want to offer thousands more to buy it themselves? Maybe he actually saw the cross hatching on the cylinders and thought maybe he had to have this himself?
Pictures were promised when I spoke to them late Friday morning, as well as the invoice for the work. Haven't arrived yet. (And to avoid any confusion - no, they wouldn't pay more for a damaged engine. My fear is they'd pay more if it was in perfect shape and tell me it was damaged so I would cancel the contract.)
People offer a wide range of prices, but in all cases, not so much that it doesn't make sense to do it. With the inspecting the cylinders, reading all the computers, and everything else I asked for, they needed about four hours. I think the cylinders contributed about an hour to that.
