Suggestion

As for the normal cable being broken or just the latch stuck, I would recommend looking down in the latch to see if it moves when someone pulls the lever from the inside.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

Eventually I got tired of it, and removed the latch assembly, the spring that "pops" the frunk had come off, reinstalling solved my problem.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

all, well i've given up on my 996 turbo search - with my airstream trailer addiction combined with 2 teens starting college this year i can't do it - i mean i could do it but my wife would put my ***** in a vise and then i'd have to move into the garage so i have been searching for a 996 and found a nice well serviced example(1999 silver/black w/104K miles) for a decent price - just had IMS/clutch/RMS/AOS done and overall a nice car. needs tires and front trunk latch isn;t working. *question - so the front trunk latch is not operating and according to the seller needs to have the front bumper removed in order to open the trunk - i'll get more info when i actually see the car and have the PPI done but wanted to ask if anyone has experienced this issue?? i assume the cable is broken or the latch itself is broken but wouldn't there be a way to open trunk from underneath? any info appreciated

POST 2Original post

Probably inop cable from interior to latch. There is a backup release cable sometimes accessable by removing driver side inner wheel liner. May have to remove front bumper cover. May want to start with bumper cover so you can clean radiators also. After you locate cable route it where it's easier to reach, some people put it close to bumper plug. Any interest in a non silver car?

POST 3Original post

On the earlier cars you can take the headlight removal tool(hex socket) and peel back the carpeting in the frunk next to the headlight to expose the hole where you insert it to pop out the headlight. The trunk release wire will often be under there. I would recommend routing this behind the passenger bumper vent for future emergencies. I was able to tuck mine up behind the bumper grill and stays there until I fish it out with my fingers. As for the normal cable being broken or just the latch stuck, I would recommend looking down in the latch to see if it moves when someone pulls the lever from the inside. You might need to remove 4 or so trim screws and cover to expose it fully. It could just need a splash of WD-40 if you're lucky.

POST 4Original post

Not sure if this is the problem, but I will give some insight. My frunk was not "popping up" when I pulled the lever from inside the car. I had to "dig" my finger in the space between the headlights and the frunk to pull up and access the lever in the front latch. Eventually I got tired of it, and removed the latch assembly, the spring that "pops" the frunk had come off, reinstalling solved my problem.
