Suggestion

Provided the engine is quiet when idling what you can do is replace the oil filter and clean the housing out and add some oil to the filter housing and install housing then run the engine at idle to nearly warm then drop the housing again to see what is in the oil filter housing oil and filter, if anything.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, Just thought I would pass along the results of my IMS change out. I brought the car to the shop because I thought the clutch felt stiff and I know that is a sign it is at the end of its life. I had the IMS bearing done "while I was in there". The clutch was close to rivets, but I changed it in time. Therefore, I did not need a new flywheel. The IMS (dual row on my 1999) was just fine - totally serviceable with no sign of wear. It is now a $650 dollar paperweight on my desk at work . I have only owned the car for 3 months....the previous 3 owners must have been pretty tough on the clutch. 47K miles is not much for a clutch in my humble opinion. Hopefully, my driving technique will yield better results over time. The only issue with my car at this time is that I am getting 4 or 5 1mm bits of amber chain guide material in the oil filter. So, one of my guides is slowly shedding little bits. Other than that, she is running perfect.....I love my car. Have a great day. Ray

POST 2Original post

Metal bits in the oil?! OMG, tear it down now for a full rebuild!!! It's good to hear a positive IMS story for once. Enjoy!

POST 3Original post

Interesting that after 15 years, the original IMS bearing was fine. Encouraging to us daredevils with original IMS bearings!

POST 4Original post

Did the amber colored composite plastic bits show up in the oil after the IMS bearing work? If so this can be a side effect of replacing the IMS bearing. There was some pressure put on the IMS to cams chain and its tensioner/guide rail which loosened some of the material. The leading/trailing edges of these can shed material. Provided the engine is quiet when idling what you can do is replace the oil filter and clean the housing out and add some oil to the filter housing and install housing then run the engine at idle to nearly warm then drop the housing again to see what is in the oil filter housing oil and filter, if anything. Be sure you dump the filter housing oil out in a *clean* drain pan. What you find or do not find determines what you do next.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Macster, The bits were present BEFORE the IMS change. My understanding is the ends of the chain guides taper to a sharp thin edge and that it is not uncommon to have the thin ends become brittle over time and begin to deteriorate. I have been told not to worry about it unless I start to see "bigger" pieces. But, I am sure like everything else with the 996 engine, some will say doom is pending and some will say that "it is not a big deal". For now, I am going to start saving and if the bits continue to present themselves, I will have the guides replaced a little later. Ray
