Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace oil' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check filter again, if there is a lot more' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Next oil change check the filter again, if there is a lot more then drop the sump and investigate further.

Suggestion
yeah, i am not very paranoid but i take time to cut open that filter and check for iron bits in it.

You can visially inspect some of the guides too while your changing the IMSB.

But if you want after the oil change start the engine and let it idle to nearly up to full temp and then shut the engine off and remove the filter housing and see what you see.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Changed oil today. I finally left the 15w50 for 5w40. Using Castrol Edge, A40 certified. I cut open the filter and found it amazingly clean. No metal whatsoever. I did find a few dark fragments within the folds which you can see here. This is every piece of debris in the whole filter, which doesn't seem like much to me. The stuff is obviously very small and looks kinda like dirt, plant (leaf), or bug parts, but could be something else. Overall, I feel pretty good about my 15 year old motor's condition now.
That seems like a lot of guide/pad wear pieces for only 32,000 miles. Mines at 57K with no guide/pad pieces. Anyone else have an opinion? Maybe age of engine?
I think I would at least remove the sump cover and see if guide/pad material is significant. You can visially inspect some of the guides too while your changing the IMSB.
Really??? I am surprised that everyone so far feels this is a lot of material in the filter. So you guys cut open your filters, extend the pleats completely, and don't have anything in there? I mean, this is literally 8 or 9 VERY small pieces of what looked like plant material. Could've been a dirty funnel I used at some time although I don't remember using one. I would think guide pad wear would be hard plastic.
I wouldn't get worked up over that. Next oil change check the filter again, if there is a lot more then drop the sump and investigate further.
On my first oil change of my air-cooled 1980 911 you should have seen the crap I found on the sump plate, lots of miles on the engine at the time. I buttoned it up and drove it another 35,000 miles 'till I sold her. Ran like a champ.
Doesn't look like guides to me, maybe a little old sealant flash. Only 32k miles on a 99? Drive that car, man! I though I was shameful at only 16k miles in 5 years to get to 48k miles on my '02. How long have you had it?
yeah, i am not very paranoid but i take time to cut open that filter and check for iron bits in it.
all in all it is about of $7k diff or so if you catch it early and send engine repair compared to 'after' ims goes kaput.
those are good cars no matter who else says what, but, they do require some attention. so far i change oil after each 2 DE events and so far it is alive, with at least 5k track miles on it. i hope it will last at least 2-3 more years before i will need to send engine for rebuild.
The cam chain guide material is composite plastic. Hard. Medium dark caramel colored and dark caramel colored, at least the guides I've seen.
If those bits are hard plastic then they are probably from the guides. The guides can shed material. A piece, a tiny piece, can break off and this means nothing.
I don't see much to be worried about.
But if you want after the oil change start the engine and let it idle to nearly up to full temp and then shut the engine off and remove the filter housing and see what you see.
If more hard plastic bits this can be a sign a chain guide covering is coming apart and you have to decide what you want to do.
If you see nothing replace the filter and top up the oil and drive the car.
Always of course you have to be attuned to the engine and if it starts to act up or make noise take the proper action.
This is really no different than say paying attention to the tires. One pays enough attention so in case a tire goes low or flat he recognizes it sooner rather than later.
