Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In the past 3 months I've done the AOS, IMS, lifters, and have a new single mass lightweight flywheel and a new clutch. While the engine was out and apart for the lifters and AOS I also did a few other preventative items like timing chain adjustments and oil cooler O rings. the car sounds and runs like it's new. I have about 53K miles on the car, it's a 2003. My goal is to drive it a lot more. and now I've replaced and or addressed all the classic 996 trouble spots. I hope the replacements hold out. The IMS is the most worrisome IMO.

I think you might have added an issue. Do a search on broken crankshafts after adding a single mass lightweight flywheel. http://986forum.com/forums/performan...too-print.html

POST 3Original post

Yeah, the single mass flywheels (lightweight to boot) beat the hell out of the crank bearings. Link provided above explains why adequately.

POST 4Original post

Very nice but if you've taken any pictures, please post them for others to use it in the future. I like reading DIY write ups.

POST 5Original post

Don't worry about the LWFW. Red herring. Every Spec Boxster runs one and they never have any problems. If this was an issue, we'd see failed Spec Boxster engines littering racetracks around the country and that's just not reality. I've put 30,000 miles on mine with no problems.

POST 6Original post

read this http://www.flat6innovations.com/broken-crank LWFW can be done only on a race engine after it gets properly balanced for hi revs and has sprung suspended clutch. put it on a stock motor with stock clutch and you only increase chances of a failure.

POST 7Original post

Bad idea. I think you should have went with the OEM LUK flywheel. +1 on the pics. You do all this stuff yourself and dont take any pics??????? Say what? Are you guys going to give him hell about this being as I posted the same thing?

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 10487460

Lots of LWFW's on stock (non-professionally balanced) engines. No reports of massive failure rate. Can it happen? Sure. Does it happen often? No.

POST 9Original post

what did the lifters run you? Apparently suboptimal lifter operation is a problem on a huge number of high mileage m96 engines.

POST 10Original post

Chances are that you don't have a lifter problem if you perform a engie oil analysis and the metal #s are in line with normal wear.

POST 11Original post

No pics of the work? What Porsche specific tools did you use?

I thought Spec Boxsters were running 2.5 or 2.7 engines. Do they run 3.4 and 3.6 engines in this series?

POST 13Original post

This from an earlier post from the OP. I think we misunderstood the new thread. Reads like he had the work done.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry folks, no photos I have never actually thought of taking pictures of car work, but since there was a call for it next job I'll make sure and snap a lot. I'm happy with the Flywheel and from the research I've done I'm not worried at all about it. I will admit I think I'll go back to duel mass when I do the clutch next time, I don't like the extra work I needed to do to remove the chatter. @b8_rdc my buddy owns a shop and only works on Porsche's so all the tools I used were certified for use on the 996. He's a Porsche's trained technician and checked my work, I'm not worried.. He does LWFW all the time and has never had a problem. What's everyone talking about? No more IMS, AOS or other worries now. Going to pop on another 50K miles quick I think. I'm ready to put major miles on mine. I'm shooting for at least 500K miles on mine before I buy a new one. By then I'm sure everything will be electric Have a good weekend everyone. Good luck on your projects !

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

@KrazyK I took out and placed the 3 external chain tensioners, so camshaft tensioner, and then chain tensioner for banks 1 and 2. thanks for asking, hope that clarifies.

POST 16Original post

OK, yes pics next time please. I and many others really enjoy seeing the parts replaced.
