Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There are some local 966's with inop motors that are priced around 10k or so. I'm not a porsche guy, yet, but am familiar with german engineering having been a bmw tech. I am a maintenance machinist now so rebuilding the motor could be an interesting proposition. I also used to manage an automotive machine shop so am familiar with precision building. Is is completely out there to attempt to refurb one of these motors? Just curious and kicking about ideas for a new project. Be fun to build one of these cars but I suppose I should drive one first just to get a sense of it. Thanks in advance for your time and patience with a noob. Bill

POST 2Original post

Not impossible -- depending on the damage. Several special tools and a couple tricky sections but nothing someone with experience should not overcome. Where is local to you? I have an engine I'd like to find a home for?

POST 3Original post

Your best bet is finding a donor motor and simply dropping it in. Of course you need to match up the 3.4L if 99-01 or 3.6L if 02+ 996. Rebuilding specialty tools can easily run $2k+ depending if you want the true Porsche or Oem-like versions. Likely the motor in the car isn't rebuild-able so there goes all your savings vs. buying decent higher mileage car.

POST 4Original post

Sometimes you get lucky like I did and the engine is fixable. If you have a chance, drain the oil before buying it. This can tell you alot for not a lot of work. If it's free of metal and or coolant then its probably fixable with not too much hassle. Since you are a mechanic, getting a fixable engine running again will be fairly easy. BUT make sure there is enough cushion in the price to plan for the worst case.....in this case a replacement engine, replacement clutch and maybe even a replacement transmission. I only paid $5K for mine, the engine parts were $2000, labour was free (my own time) but the transmission will need to be cracked open soon.
