Leading evidence: 'plastic piece' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'plastic piece' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check because it doesn't looks like it was ever glued' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'm speculating that the tops needs to be re-alligned, but I wanted to get some feedback before I call the guy who installed the top to be more confident that this is his issue to fix.

I've used the top about 5 times since then with no issues until today.

I'm just double checking because it doesn't looks like it was ever glued on (no adhesive remnants on it)

Frisbee - you do recommend gluing the cover on right?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Frisbee - Thanks very much, it was the plastic piece that slid out of place, I took it off and then put it back on properly and that did the trick.
I did some searches and couldn't really find anything exactly like the problem I'm having.
I had a new top put on about 2-3 weeks ago. For the first week I left it up so it would stretch, etc...
For the last week or so it's been working without issue. Today I put the top down and took about a 10 minute ride and then tried to put the top back up. Everything was going fine until it latched in the front. It hooked up as normal, but then it disengaged and as I kept holding the button it continued to re-engage and disengage. After 3 or 4 tries I let go of the button to leave the hook engaged but I know the cycle didn't finish because the dashlight is on and I can't raise the rear windows.
I'm speculating that the tops needs to be re-alligned, but I wanted to get some feedback before I call the guy who installed the top to be more confident that this is his issue to fix.
One other thing I should add is that I installed a double-din radio Sunday and did add the e-brake bypass hack. I've used the top about 5 times since then with no issues until today. I don't think it's related to the top problem but wanted to provide full disclosure.
Thanks!
Definitely call the guy who installed it. He put it on, he should fix it.
That said, check to see that the plastic piece on the end of the hook is still in place. That may keep it from engaging the microswitch in the hook reciever (in the top-center of the windshield).

Frisbee - Thanks very much, it was the plastic piece that slid out of place, I took it off and then put it back on properly and that did the trick. I saw the links you sent (thanks), I will get some goop and glue it on. Hopefully that will resolve the issue completely. I have to question the design (metal with a separate plastic cover?) but maybe I'm missing the engineering behind it.
Thanks again, that was a big help and saves me from having to schedule time back at the top shop.
Glad to hear it worked
When you said your rear windows wouldn't go up, I figured that might be the problem. Sometimes I push in the latch microswitch with my finger to put the rear windows up when the top is down. (only when I have rear passengers and am driving at highway speeds.)
I bought the top from the same company that installed it. When I asked the owner specifically if it was a GAHH top, he said it was but based on the price I have a feeling it's a generic German A5 top with the plastic window.
I paid $1,200 total and the company that did it came recommended by a friend who owns a local high-end body shop.

I'm not certain. I've never replaced mine, I'm just aware of the issue.
I think the plastic part is originally one piece that extends up into the main body of the latch mechanism, so it isn't glued on. If it breaks, the solution is to cut away the broken parts and glue on a new piece, in lieu of taking apart the entire latching mechanism. I think there is a TSB (Porsche Tech Service Bulliten) on this. (you can search around here, or read the TSB on renntech if you are a member.)
IIRC, people have just glued it on.
Time to look into SmartTop and RemoteTop electronics, not cheap at close to $600, but worth it in my book.
What you can do is to find a vendor and offer to buy both at the same time, and ask for a discount.
It won't, but you will have the convinence of one-touch and remote opening and closing of the convertible top which later model of 911 do, you can also open/close the top at low speed without coming to a full stop, you already did the eBrake hack so it won't matter, but the SmartTop will allow you to bypass the eBrake as well without hacking the wires or switch.
As many have said, Porsche should have had this function from the factory, but liability concersn likely cause these functions to be removed for the NA market.
