However, that white connecter was cut-off when the Alpine headunit was installed (the installer ultimately didn't do anything with those speaker wires but nonetheless he did cutoff the connector).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2002 with an older Alpine motorized single DIN (CVA-1006) stereo/Nav unit installed. Car originally had the Bose option. The original amplifier is still installed and I presume (but don't know) that it is still used in the current set-up. I don't like the looks of this Alpine unit and despise its ergonomics with its fold out screen. I just ordered a used CDR-220 off of EBAY and a set of installation tools. I couldn't handle the $700 for a Becker Amber unit that looks great but is clearly not $700 worth of electronics. Too bad there are not any reasonably priced aftermarket options that look at least quasi OE or at least not like a control panel from a outer space robot. Oh well, 220 it is. The Alpine was installed by hacking into the existing wiring harness but the Porsche connectors are still present. I plan to "de hack" the cut wires by just matching the colored wires back to one another. Am I likely to need anything else in order to mount the 220? In other words, do aftermarket installations typically result in OE brackets being removed? If so, what am I likely to need? Any reference picture that shows the standard mounting hardware (or what the inside of the DIN slot ready to accept the 220 looks like) would be great. Thanks for any help.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think I was partially wrong about the OE connectors being present. There should be 3 connectors that plug into the 220 - correct? I only have two. I have 8 cut-off speaker wires that I believe originally went into the third connector. How do I go about sourcing that 8 pin connector?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The aftermarket radio was installed in a different location from the 220's original slot so I don't think I should have a problem with the mounting hardware for reinstalling the 220. There was a Alpine amp (4x45 per the case) installed and the Bose amp was hacked out of the system. I checked one rear speaker and it is the original Bose. The current system does sound good and I'm afraid I'm going to be taking a step back in sound quality for ergonomics and looks purposes.

POST 4Original post

Hopefully you can simply plug in the existing wiring harnesses and it will fire up. You'll need the radio code, but hopefully you got that with the sale. You should only need two plugs. The third is probably the optional CD-changer. FWIW, there are aftermarket solutions that look much more OEM than the unit you have. My Kenwood double-DIN system looks quite good. The lighting can be customized so that it matches the Porsche factory lighting. I don't think it looks bad at all and it sounds fantastic.

The plug that was cut-off was a speaker wire plug - I have 8 speaker wires just hanging (4 speakers). I presume the headunit powered those 4 and the Bose amp the others? The other white plug (that is still there) per a diagram at renntech.org has things like Illumination, Speed Volume, etc. The multicolored plug (yellow, blue and green) is still present and is where the CD changer goes. There are numerous plug wires cut including those at the Bose amp that are now wired into the current Alpine system. I'll just splice those back to where they originated. If converting back does not suit me, I'll probably go double DIN as I agree I've seen several on here that look very good. However, I'd prefer to not spend that much. Also have concerns with display washing out with top down and while ergo would be much better than I have, not sure I'd like the touch screen and complexity aspect.

POST 6Original post

I think you need 6 channels total so ... are you sure your subs are working? I have a Nokia amp in the bonnet that handles just the subs, CDR-210 handles the other 4 channels (I would assume your setup is similar). I also have a Boxster with a Becker 220 in it so I can go check if you are still unsure. The wires from the Alpine to the Bose I assume are the pre-amp signals. What you are doing is a great idea BTW. The original Becker gear is really good stuff. Far more bang for the buck by replacing the cruddy Bose speakers and leave the original head units. You can get the Ipod connector for the CDR-220 on Ebay now for a pittance.

POST 7Original post

The weak link in terms of sound quality is definitely the speakers. I had the iPod cable and charging adapter connected to my OEM becker unit for a while. I ended upgrading it because I also wanted nav, bluetooth, etc.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm not sure if all the speakers are working currently with the aftermarket system. Obviously I can find out. However, for converting back to the 220 it's not relevant. All I'm trying to do at this point is get the system working as it was originally equipped. I need to be able to plug the 8 factory speaker wires that run to the 220 into the 220. However, that white connecter was cut-off when the Alpine headunit was installed (the installer ultimately didn't do anything with those speaker wires but nonetheless he did cutoff the connector). Where can I get that white connector?
