When my Turbo's 6-speed was replaced under CPO warranty the tech told me that had the car not had a warranty the cost in labor would have been around $1K.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Folks what would the hour duration of the effort be to drop an engine, replace a tip tranny and reinstall engine in a 2002 996 C2?
An indy shop tells me we're looking at about 20 hours work, but my warrantee company tells me about 9 hours.
Thanks!
warrantee company is much closer to reality.
I have a 6 speed but had it removed and reinstalled back on the road within about that time.
I don"t imagine that a tip would be much more time.
good luck!
Pete
Porsche says you have to drop the engine/tip together then separate thats why they told you that. 20 hours seems high.
You can easily drop the 6 speed in a few hours maybe less.
Dealer charged me 8 hours to drop manual trans and replace clutch. Same dealer charged me 20 hours to drop trans and perform an engine swap - I believe that was on the high side - tech told me it takes 12 actual hours to drop trans and perform an engine swap.
When my Turbo's 6-speed was replaced under CPO warranty the tech told me that had the car not had a warranty the cost in labor would have been around $1K. That works out to around 8 hours. He said he supports the engine so just the transmission comes out.
And in fact that is what he did. I think I snapped a pic of the engine being supported by a (tall!) engine support jack. (Pics are on other laptop not handy right now.)
I seem to recall being told that in the case of a Tip the tranny can't be dropped without dropping the engine.
for a shop that's done it before... 2 hours
remove intake
drain coolant
unhook wiring harness
remove a/c -or- break line loose and recharge after new engine in
unhook ps lines
remove slave cylinder
remove shifter linkage
remove half shafts from trans
remove sway bar
remove underbody cross members
remove rear bumper cover
remove motor mounts
remove trans mouns
drop motor/trans
Part of the extra time pulling an auto trans is unbolting the flex plate from the flywheel. You have to remove the starter and turn the engine to get to each of the bolts.
There is a tool to hold the engine while removing the trans.
I got caught up in the removal only. For replacement (manual), I would say 6 hours for someone who knows what they are doing. The 996 engine removal is one of the easiest I've ever done.
I wasn't thinking about an automatic. Ugh that would be grueling.
It really depends on the shop too. Some shops will use a flat rate and others will bill for actual hours worked. Depending on the experience of the shop I would say that the rate could vary by quite a bit.
Now that is an interest way to lift up the car to drop the engine but how did you move the engine to were it is in the picture? Looks like the legs of the lift would capture the engine.
And, with no prior experience, I dropped my manual out in two evenings so around 4-5 hours taking my time and it was on a lift. Don't see why an automatic would take any more time.
Other than getting to the starter to remove it and unbolting the flex plate probably not too much more difficult. Time yourself next time you pull a Tiptronic.
