Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Recent problem I need some guidance on. I was changing the coil packs and plugs on the passenger side. I jacked up the car from right rear, pretty high. After doing the work, I made the mistake of starting the car before I lowered the car to make sure everything ran right. So, car was tilted heavily to the driver's side. Because of the car's tilt, I guess the 6cyl was starved of oil (being the highest elevated cylinder) and the engine basically grenaded. Towed the car to my shop and 6 piston is no longer connected to the crank. Is it really possible in this scenario that the engine really blew up of the cylinder being oil starved?

POST 2Original post

Man thats awful. Sorry to hear. Must have really been on its side to starve for oil. I have run mine many times on jack stands with no problems. You may want to contact Jake at Flat6 and ask.

POST 3Original post

You seriously started your car, with one side up on jack stands? Not smart in the least, but while it may have been a factor, it would not normally grenade an engine. it culd only be up so high, or you couldn't have gotten in the car to start it. But yes, if it was oil starved (for whatever reason), that could easily happen.

POST 4Original post

I would be surprised if jacking the car us is all it takes to blow the motor; probably d-chunk that finally let go.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 10274466

I don't see how the piston & or rod is no longer connected to the crank. Spun rod bearings enough to lockup the crank maybe. How long did the engine run in this postion??

POST 6Original post

Just saw that you are in Atlanta. Call flatsixinnovations.com & talk to them.

POST 7Original post

Surely pics and details will follow. Either way its a CEF and very bad for the OP. I truly am sorry but see if the engine can be saved before you give up.

POST 8Original post

Sucks this happened to you. I doubt that it was slanted made much difference. That would imply that every time you would start your car on an incline there is a risk of engine blowing up?! From what i can see your car was supercharged at one point and you track it pretty hard, that might have done some damage.

POST 9Original post

Sometimes just starting it can cause this. How many times does this need to be posted? Hope he does so. Impossible, remember the thread where we were assured SC'ing an M96 caused no problems or risks?

POST 10Original post

damn - that idea of a turbo is sounding better and better every day

POST 11Original post

That sux! Sorry to hear that...especially after giving it some TLC

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 10274466

I find this HIGHLY unlikely... if that was the case then why wouldn't your engine grenade when on a race track? For example, Daytona's steepest angle is about 31 degrees... that's pretty steep! While starting a car on jacks is not a safe way of doing maintnenance, I doubt if it caused your issues. Sorry for the bad luck... Tom

POST 13Original post

How far into the redline did you rev it when the corner was jacked?

POST 15Original post

More likely hydrolocked from oil pooling under the piston.

POST 16Original post

If the oil pickup was not picking up oil then a bad chain of events could be triggered .One result could be heat and ultimately a failed rod bolt .Not knowing the angle of the car and where the oil pickup was in relation to the oil pool it's only speculation without facts . Sorry for your misfortune.................

POST 17Original post

fpb, you really think that could happen? I suppose if it were a steep enough angle, huge clearances, long enough time, maybe. I know water will do it quickly but oil????? Im being serious. Not funny, oh well, maybe a little funny.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the feedback. Some answers: - Road Atlanta and Roebling do not have any camber like Daytona and others. - Ironically I did a few Auto-x with the VF supercharger, but ripped it off and did a big project taking the car back to stock with just intake, full fabspeed exhaust and tune. - According to my indy the 6 cylinder's piston is not connected to the crank anymore. Crazy issue they had not seen before. being disconnected, it was burning fuel in the cylinder and caused other issues. Crazy and unfortunate.

I've snapped rods in half before so that's not unheard of. The motor sounds rebuildable so don't run it anymore. Cases are expensive these days.... PS: The late Carlitos's 3.4 ran for 25k miles with a blower and is still racing today (without the blower) with 110k mles on the original, untouched motor. The trans just recently broke a shift fork but the internals all looked good. He rebuilt it of course....

POST 20Original post

Plenty of people own these cars and live/park on the steep streets of San Francisco. Even parking at odd angles. Seems difficult to believe that that was the cause.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 10275809

Can you be a bit more clear on this?

POST 22Original post

[QUOTE=KrazyK;10275757]fpb, you really think that could happen? I suppose if it were a steep enough angle, huge clearances, long enough time, maybe. I know water will do it quickly but oil????? Im being serious. I had a Harley throw me on the ground and jump on me once. After it broke my leg it slid up an embankment so that the engine was heads down and the oil flowed/got sucked up under one piston, it blew the cylinder base flange off when it tried to compress the oil under the piston, cracked the case too. That engine was dry sump. We figured the scavenge pump was out of the oil in the bottom of the case at the pickup so it just pumped all of the oil out of the tank and POOMP goes the engine. (that is kinda what it sounded like) Only took ~20 seconds. That oil was hot though. You would think that with the opposing pistons there would be enough room to "slosh" the oil back and forth? I don't know how or what any oil would get compressed against under the piston in these engines. I know that in the early 3ltr air-cooled engines the oil could get trapped in the cases and foam and overheat. Porsche redesigned the screen around the pickup to address that.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

seems to be I suffered from "a bad day". Thanks for the feedback. Flat6 put a bug in my brain, so I have some interesting decisions....

POST 24Original post

If you ever decided to sell it as it is, I might know a buyer for it.

POST 26Original post

I dont think you can hydrolock any engine from the back side.

POST 27Original post

I think he meant it leaked past the rings to the top of piston which still seems odd.

POST 28Original post

Pic of the car at an angle? I've had vehicles at much steeper angles under operation than on jack stands and never had starvation issues. I'm willing to bet there is another reason for the failure.

POST 30Original post

Hence the "seems odd" comment. Maybe it was a combo of the SC, bad AOS, engine on side? This thread has convunced me not to lift my car to work on it. I will be using a low profile creeper. To the OP; could you take some photos of the engine while you disassemble?

POST 31Original post

Krazyk; What is a low profile creeper? A couple of slow-rising ramps, for example? Martin

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 10274960

Agreed. Could be a parted rod, but much more likely d-chunk cased the rod to fail. BTDT...

POST 33Original post

this is either really bad luck and coincidence timeing or we dont have the whole story

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 10286917

Yeah we never heard why the plugs needed to be changed in such a awkward position.

POST 35 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Asked shop about CEL error and suggested coil pack and plug change to see if it fixed. swiched dist cables between 5&6 to see if error code moved to cyl 5. Only jacked up one side to do work. I'm summing it up to bad day. Problem was in the works. Compression check may have shown more. live and learn. May get compression tool for future use.

POST 36Original post

JM, Im sorry, but I was just joking about lifting car. Mine spends a lot of time on jack stands and the engine hasnt blown up yet.

POST 37Original post

Quotes source post: 10287518

Did you really mean switching the CABLES 5 and 6 (cable 5 plug to plug 6 and vice versa)??? Or you meant switching the coils 5 and 6?

I have a running 3.4L that I'm going to sell on ebay soon for around $7000 if interested.

Holy crap, check out the bluing on the crank and the crank bearings!

POST 45Original post

I have a very difficult time believing that this happened at idle without any warning? Something doesn't add up.

POST 46Original post

Maybe the OP doesn't look at the oil pressure gauge?

POST 47Original post

Does it matter? Lesson learned, don't use too much RTV on any oil seal.

POST 48Original post

It matters because the story and the pictures don't add up. 20 years ago, when I was learning how to work on cars, made the same mistake but it only resulted in a spum connecting rod bearing. I was driving that car when the oil filter and the bypass tube got plugged. Thing don't add up here, would be nice to know the real story.

POST 49Original post

Quotes source post: 10398083

We had a meet and greet with Jake and Charles (And Tony Callas of Excellence) last night and one of the points passed on to us is that idling is the WORST state for an M96 because of low oil pressure @ idle. If there was a preexisting condition - the lower oil pressure wasn't helpful...

POST 50Original post

The new issue of Excellence has a letter and response to it that EXACTLY discusses this situation. (i.e. oil screen blockage due to excess sealant.)
