Porschetech3 - so late 2002 and later can have the cluster set for the older fill level???
Leading evidence: 'Fill level' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Suggestion
The change was due to an inefficient AOS system and the change was just a band-aid( equivalent to sticking a band-aid over a bullet wound ), new style dipstick and oil fill level increases the risk of oil starvation.

My advice if you have a 2002 with engine before 662 11805 do NOT change to the new style dipstick ( or reprogram the instrument cluster) and if you a 2002+ after engine # 662 11806 CHANGE BACK to the 996.1 dipstick ( and reprogram the instrument cluster to suit the old style dipstick and oil fill level)...

Easiest fix to make the engine happy and you happy is to replace the OEM AOS with the UAOS Track version which can handle the oil at full and even 1 qt over full.

No, ( it would be ok only if you drive like a GrandMa) .....I would advise anyone with a 2003+ M96 and they drive it like a real Sports Car with UAOS to get the 'OLD style" dipstick and reprogram to the OLD oil level characteristics and run at Full , and if you have the Track Drain , run at 1 qt overfulll ....and if you have verified Blow-by to be less than 80 LPM under WOT, then you can run another .5 to 1.0 qts...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

While reading, I bumped into a technical document that says that for 996.2 oil dipstick prior to VIN ...99Z2S603565 should be replaced and the instrument cluster should also be coded for the new dipstick, to remedy the problems of blue smoke in acceleration. I am attaching the three pages from the document I have been reading. Is this a valid advice/upgrade to do?
@Porschetech3
has posted on this several times, with pictures.
The update, and the New dipstick, lowers the oil level in the pan by, I believe, half a quart. This was a decision to lower the chance of smoke, and lower the chance of their terrible AOS design sucking oil into the intake, by increasing the chance of oil starvation.
If you run an UAOS, or especially with the track drain, then the consensus here seems to be to run at the Old, higher, oil level.

The much better and safer solution is to install the UAOS Sytem, it is a much more robust and efficient AOS System that has many many benefits...
Porschetech3 - so late 2002 and later can have the cluster set for the older fill level??? What do I tell the PIWIS person to do?
-Tom
2003 C2 w/UAOS and UIDS
Skip any idea if you can change it with a regular durametric or do you need the PWIS? Don't know if it really matters since I check it by the oil stick. But why not change it of you can with a durametric.
Yesterday I looked at my dipstick and it is the new style. My oil tank is at 50% and the dipstick shows that. Additionally my dashboard oil checker shows 3 lines from the top. PIWIS should that my cluster is the OLD style. so i switched to new on the PIWIS 3 (as shown on the screen above) considering that I had the new style dipstick, and now it looks overfilled... So I switched it back to OLD style and I am going to leave it there, as per the advice of everybody.
You may want to consider ordering an old style dipstip to get the readings to align. It's a tricky balancing act. The M96 doesn't like low oil levels. The OEM AOS doesn't like high oil levels and will smoke. Hence why the factory created the new dipstick and reprogram of the oil gauge to reduce the oil level by half a quart.
Easiest fix to make the engine happy and you happy is to replace the OEM AOS with the UAOS Track version which can handle the oil at full and even 1 qt over full. This means you can canyon carve all you want, park on a hill and even not worry if you accidently overfilled the oil, all without having to worry about smoking.
Hi Tom, My PIWIS 2 is down at the moment ( had a hard drive crash) but as soon as I can get a new Hard Drive and get it up and runnning no problem....will only take a few minutes...
I don't know if Durametric can do this but it would be simple to find out......If you have a Duramteric just hook it up and call me ,we will walk through
it...
You should also get the 996.1 diipstick to match with your instrument cluster programming...

UIDS oil fill level 9.9 qts
UIDS with UAOS Track Version 10.9 qts
UIDS with UAOS Track Version and verified less than 80 LPM blow-by at WOT.... 11.4 qts to 11.9 qts
