Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

17 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

I am still getting used to it - which brings me to my question.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know I am going to get flamed for stalling my car every now and then even though I have been driving a manual car since 1998 I am still getting used to it - which brings me to my question. I stalled the car this morning backing into my parking spot. I tried to restart a couple times without success. I then switched the ignition off pulled key out waited a few seconds and then it started right up. Is this normal or is something up? I checked the manual and couldn't find anything. Cheers! Ren

POST 2Original post

I've stalled my 996 a few times. I recall having to turn the key completely to the left (off position) then restart. Starts right away after this. Ensure you depress the clutch in too while starting.

POST 3Original post

What does "without success" mean? Was the engine turning over but not catching, or did turning the key not cause the starter to engage? If the former, that's not normal (at least for my 996). If the latter, like jeneric996 says, key off then try to start again.

Starter was not engaging. I am not sure if I turned the key all the way off when I was trying to restart it. On the last attempt which worked, I pulled the key all the way out. I will run a quick test and see - maybe try 3 attempts in a row.

POST 5Original post

Mine is the same way. I have to turn it all the way off to restart. This might be a safety thing so you don't try to start it while it's running and possibly damaging the starter Mike

POST 6Original post

When I first removed the assist spring from my clutch pedal, I killed my car at least once every other day for a week or two while sitting in traffic.

POST 7Original post

911s have had that safety option since at least 1970. If you turn the key to "start" again after initially starting the car it will not engage the starter until you turn it to "off".

The 928s are like this too.

POST 9Original post

Heh, this scared me the first time as well. It's a "feature." Key off then back on again to reset. No biggie.

POST 11Original post

I think all german cars are like that. My CLK and my e30 m3 (which i miss alot) was the same way.

Everyone can contribute somehow!

POST 15Original post

Also try pushing the gas pedal all the way down and releasing a few times before the next restart. Sometimes, you get a stuck actuator and the car has too much fuel during kick-over. -td

POST 16Original post

What you're experiencing is normal--for a 996. I have a 997 and it does the same thing. I think it has to do with the way the vario-cam system works.
