My dad just bought an '04 C4S, and I am interested in giving him the sport shifter kit as a Christmas gift (have it on our 997 C4S and love it!) I'm wondering what you would recommend - are there other non-OEM kits that are better, more cost-effective or both?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, all - My dad just bought an '04 C4S, and I am interested in giving him the sport shifter kit as a Christmas gift (have it on our 997 C4S and love it!) I'm wondering what you would recommend - are there other non-OEM kits that are better, more cost-effective or both? I imagine the install would be the same with any kit, but I'm looking for something that can be installed by the dealer, and of course not void the factory warranty (non-OEM shift kits don't do that, do they?) I appreciate any thoughts! Christina 2006 C4S Seal Grey/black, PSE, SSK, Bose, Sport Chrono, Sport Design wheel

Christina - I installed the B&M short shifter on my '04 C2 about 15 months ago and I love it. It is a DIY install and takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to install. Eric at BumperPlugs.com has a Holiday Special on the B&M for $199. https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...hlight=Special

POST 3Original post

Christina, I have the OEM SSK - love it, but paid more than the $199 special on the B&M. Both are fine and pretty much equivalent from what I understand. So, let me understand this - your dad has TWO C4S's - a 997 and now a 996? When does he give you your Christmas gift - humor him and tell you you'll take the "old" one off his hands!

POST 4Original post

Brandywine Porsche was having a year end special on the OEM version at $225, I believe. I don't know that the OEM is any better or worse than the B&M. People seem to say fine things about both. I went with the OEM so I wouldn't have any warranty issues, but I don't know that my concern was legitimate.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you all for the input, I really appreciate it! Phil, to answer your question, it's actually my husband and I who have the 997, and my dad, after driving ours, had to find one himself! He also loved our SSK. Happy holidays to you all, and enjoy those P-cars! Christina

POST 6Original post

Phil, I think you'll find that the Porsche SSK is manufactured by B&M - it's simply in a different box and is anodised a different color. Oh, and cots more! Chris.

POST 7Original post

Get the unit from bumperplugs.com - a bargain at $199 and an easy 1.5 hour install.

POST 8Original post

Price correction!!! Brandywine Porsche has B&M SSK for $128.76 (all 996). I bought it about a week ago. It was not differcult to install.

POST 9Original post

Part correction!! The B&M SSK that Brandywine Porsche selling is not the lever that connect to the shift ****. This kit designed to be install underneath the car. Sorry!!!

POST 10Original post

I realize what I have is not a kit, but a full assembly to replace what is in the console and thus more expensive. But it is Porsche factory short shifter so I would hope that there is no warrant question whatsoever. There have been comments that some dealers did not like the non-Porsche ones. I have the assembly for $450 shipped to you and I would think it would save a little on the dealer installed cost as it should be a little quicker. Just for your consideration. POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, all - Thanks again for the thoughts. Here's my tentative plan - I'm thinking B & M, thanks to your insights, and probably getting it from Sharkwerks. I'm in the San Jose area (and so is my dad), so I might get the kit and a gift certificate for installation from them. I know I could install it myself, but I know my dad will feel best if a pro does it... So, two questions - have any of you ever heard of this non-OEM (but identical to OEM) part having an impact on the warranty? And, what can you tell me about Sharkwerks? I know they're good Rennlist sponsors, and Alex sent me a very nice and prompt e-mail response, which is one of the reasons I'd like to work with them (plus I can't stand our local dealer!) I'm sure they're great, just don't have any experience with them and want to confirm. (Please PM me if there's anything negative.) Thanks! Christina

POST 12Original post

Porsche will not warranty the B&M part if it fails. They will also not warranty anything that breaks as a result of installing the SSK. (The only things I can think of are interior bits broken, or if the shift cables get messes up somehow.) Other than that you should have no warrantly problems.
