Saw some "minor" stuff on the paint before then on two test drives but thought it was pretty clean overall.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just bought a new '06 WRX as an extra AWD car. The car was bought last Friday in the rain. Saw some "minor" stuff on the paint before then on two test drives but thought it was pretty clean overall. It is a left over '06, I expected to do some detailing work. Got it home and washed it. Next came the clay and then the PC. The "minor" spots- not minor. They don't come out. Resin or bird drops and the damage is through the clear coat. 2 body shops confirmed this. Went back to dealer and decided to swap hoods with the other 100% matching WRX they had, same deal, spots again. So, it's getting the hood re-sprayed. Not happy but lets not go there. As an aside, the spots were very difficult to see outside (even without rain :-) Inside, under a shops lighting they really became visible. Grey really hides stuff. Too well this time I'm afraid. Here is the question: The body shop guy says wax is ok right away, as long as it has no silicones. He says they wax it before delivery in fact. I thought you had to wait. I also was going to clear bra it Wednesday. I cancelled that. 90 days seems to be the concensus before doing that. If I have to look for a positive...it's tough but... perhaps the re-sprayed hood will in fact be better than a one year old that sat in at least two dealer lots. Build date on the car is 10/05. I'm hoping it comes out perfect but wanted to Klasse AIO and wax over that then Clearbra it. What say you pro's?

POST 2Original post

Sorry to hear about the car. I've read recommendations of -at least- 30 days, as the paint is still curing (assuming that it's not factory OEM. The body shop guy is probably right, but he forgets that the factory paint is heat and UV cured pretty well and has allowed all the volatiles to come off. Most paint fresh back from the body shop has not fully released all the volatile junk and is still curing and film forming, so needs longer to get to it's final state. YMMV, depending up on the body shop, the paint and their finishing process.

POST 3Original post

I assume you are talking about the body rather than the re-sprayed hood.... I guess it's not a " new" car any more as it has been built since 10/05 so the paint is cured and your 90 days are long since passed!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No, I already detailed the rest of the whole car. The part I was asking about is the hood which will be newly painted. They say wax is ok. Didn't ask about sealers or 3m protection from the body shop guy today. Sounds like wax is ok (w/o silicone), sealers are probably out, as is 3m for a good 90 days. Looking for confirmation.

POST 5Original post

30 days for wax, 30 days for clear bra. Probably was waxed at the shop with a high speed wool padded buffer and some glaze. Let it sit for 30 days. Patience will be your friend.

POST 8Original post

After you wait 30 days, you can use a polish and remove any film and swirl marks then wax it. You can use a chemical buffing compound made for clear coats, such as Clean Cut, from the paint supply shop or detail supplier.

POST 9Original post

I personally would wait 60-90 days on the hood that is being sprayed right now by the dealer. It is just my opinion but I used to have a close friend who was a body shop painter and that is what he reccomended as well.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Spoke to the shop today again in more detail. They say there is a lot of misconceptions out there lingering from when paints were different. They say the paint used today is a two part urethane. Once sprayed it sets up quick. It is a chemical cure rather than a true drying cure. They will polish the hood within 24 hours of sprayinf it and wax it too before I get it tomorrow. Just no silicones in any sealer or wax. None. They deferred the clear bra wait to those installers. 90 days seems to be the deal there. Interesting how there are so many opinions though.
