Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

They told me the clutch still had about 40% left on it but had it replaced anyway.

First.......the gear lever feels very slippery (no bad jokes please) and causes a problem with fingers slipping off, especially when the gearbox is cold and changing gear is slower.

They also said the input shaft onto which the release bearing slides was bone dry, and this can cause problems on its own, so I'm hoping that the clutch work miht help the slow change when cold.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Two issues that I can't find an answer to on "search"......at least not as it relates to the 996.
First.......the gear lever feels very slippery (no bad jokes please) and causes a problem with fingers slipping off, especially when the gearbox is cold and changing gear is slower. Anyone had this problem and found a good cure??
Second......again, when cold, very notchy from 1st to 2nd. The 993 squad postings suggest Redline oil. Anyone had/have problems and foudn a cure??
Hi,
I have never experienced any problems with slipping off of the gear ****.
However, experincing some notching whilst switching from first to second is a common issue I belive in older or badly maintained boxes. Esp when cold
I had to have my tranny rebuilt due to pineon shaft bearings and a crunch into second. I think it sounds like it could be the second gear synchro.
Some people have had success with redline but it didnt work for me.
Hopefully just swapping out your tranny fluid might solve it for you.
Do you know when it was last changed?
Good luck
It was changed at the last correct service interval and the car service history is complete.
Car has done about 80k miles and is in right now for a replacement clutch assy including flywheel, new IMS bearing, new RMS, new AOS. They told me the clutch still had about 40% left on it but had it replaced anyway. They also said the input shaft onto which the release bearing slides was bone dry, and this can cause problems on its own, so I'm hoping that the clutch work miht help the slow change when cold. Great when warmed up! Should get the car back Wednesday.
No help on the slippery issue, but a few dozen rude comments I could make.
My gearbox is notchy as well usually in 1st - 2nd before the engine gets warmed up. The car has been serviced properly as well. I've got a '99 with 82,500 miles on it. From other 996 owners I've talked with that have owned them since inception, they have said theirs was notchy as well until warmed up. I'm going to switch to Redline at next service interval, but I don't expect a tremendous difference from it, but we'll see.
