FWIW, I recently replaced my clutch myself at 96K and it is still using the original DMF.

Porsche has a procedure for checking the DMF and recommends to only replace if it fails checks or if below mins.

Lauderdale - Pompano Beach area that would be willing to recommend a reputable and trustworthy independant Porsche shop.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just got back from a very short ride. I noticed that my clutch has begun to slip and came right home. I'm new to Porsche ownership and am reaching out to anyone in the Ft. Lauderdale - Pompano Beach area that would be willing to recommend a reputable and trustworthy independant Porsche shop. No onus and no recrimination implied. I'm in the car businesss and know how people can be. I assume all responsibility. Just need someone willing to point me in a direction. I've got 109k on the clock and will probably go ahead with the IMS (sorry for the mention) retrofit at the same time. The local Porsche dealer only uses factory parts and won't install the LN bearing.
Also, can anyone tell me how long I have before my clutch completely fails? Right now, I noticed the slip on hard acceleration in the higher gears. If I just drive like a "normal" driver with no hard acceleration, what are my chances of making it another week until I can get the repairs done?
Go to LNengineering.com & check the list of authorized installers for the IMS bearing upgrade. The other issue to be concerned with is ruining your flywheel. If it has never been replaced you should replace it, but if you don't know it's history, minimize additional driving.
Locals:
TuneRS - tunersmall.com - heard good about them
Foreign Affair Motorsport - foreignaffairsmotorsports.com
Flat6motorworks - flat6motorworks.com
Stokes - stokesporsche.com - heard good but =might only be air cooled
awdmotorsports - awdmotorsports.com - more 4wd but they do porsches
Pedro - pedrosgarage.com - advertise in local porsche magazine
I'd say call them all and see who says what and report back
I am curious to hear your feedback, because I live nearby and still have not fallen in love with any local shop aside of porsche champion motorsport: championmotorsport.com ...but pricey
This quote is from Gulf Performance Center in Pompano beach. As I said, he quoted this as worst case. He indicated that almost all clutch changes require the dual mass flywheel to be replaced.
Sorry but that's BS! Porsche has a procedure for checking the DMF and recommends to only replace if it fails checks or if below mins. A DMF is a grand alone so I don't see how he could do the whole job for $2,400. Would be willing to bet it will take a lot more than that to get your car back. FWIW, I recently replaced my clutch myself at 96K and it is still using the original DMF.
Tom
Thanks. I'm still shopping for a shop I feel good with. If I need a flywheel, so be it. If I don't, I'd rather not go the extra grand. The key is an honest tech that won't sell me on something I don't really need.
I've been quoted $2400 by another local garage. This for IMS and clutch kit. No mention of flywheel, but this does not mean that I wouldn't get a call from him after the transmission is out that I need to find another $1000 to get it put back together due to a worn flywheel. Been in the car business too long and have seen too many cases where the bill gets bumped up after teardown (most times justified but not always.) The "while we have it apart" stance is what bothers me with all the techs I've spoken to since getting my car.
109k mi probably should do AOS while trans is out. Part = ~$130
TSB 911 (996) 8/02 1360 Dual Mass Flywheel Check procedure
http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...-procedurepdf/
Can the dual Mass Flywheel be twisted approx. 15mm in each direction, left/right, and does it return to approximately its initial position? If so it is good.
Can the DMF be twisted beyond dim stated above without a noticeable increase in the spring force? Or is it fixed (no rotation?) if so bad
D&R Auto Salon 3025 N. Old Dixie Hwy in Delray Bch. Bought my 2003 996 C2 in Delray Beach in August. D&R was recommended to me. Great shop rate and incredibly honest. Bob will do right by you. Wish we lived closer - he's the only one I would ever use.
