You've got to remember many loaded Boxsters were over $60k and there was quite a waiting list just to order one, and hardly anything, anywhere came up used for quite some time.

you will have to admit that the air filter is something you don't have to change more often than you would need to clean your front 996 radiators...

Suggestion
The good sense would be to have the most easier setup to maximize motivations to change oil often, as well as having a clean oil filter.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Saw this on the 997 forum... This is what you need to do to change the oil and filter , Air Filter on a 991.
Now, I do really like the look of the new car but is it me or is this a genuinely stupid design? whats a dealer going to charge 500 bucks to change the oil?
Maybe the bumper is "quick release".... nah.
To get to the air filter:
I'm very happy with what I have, but I could see owning a 991 down the road when they depreciate and all the flaws come out
But I don't want a car that I have to spend hours on just to change the oil and air filter!
While I'm sure the 991 will be a superb driver it takes the 991 further away from what many of us love about these cars. But than again I said that about the 996 when it came out and now I have owned one for years. But I still hang onto the ol' 86 for the fix I need.
Car manufacturers are purposefully designing things to force customers to seek service at the dealer. When the Boxster first came out in '97 in the US there was a lot of speculation and fear associated with doing a simple oil change. Most people would just take the car to the dealer and pay the price which was very high. You've got to remember many loaded Boxsters were over $60k and there was quite a waiting list just to order one, and hardly anything, anywhere came up used for quite some time. The (high) rollers would pay up to $350 for the simple oil change and most didn't consider DIY.
Well you can see the oil filter housing easily accessed on the top of the motor. Assuming you can drain the oil from underneath, I don't think you would need to remove the bumper to change the oil.
The air filter though. That's another matter. You shouldn't have to remove body panels to change a filter.
you will have to admit that the air filter is something you don't have to change more often than you would need to clean your front 996 radiators... which require the front bumper to be removed.
I hope oil change are easy because this needs to be done a lot more frequently especially for the client who track their car.
You would do that through the oil fill tube, but I doubt draining the oil would be the biggest hassle. I think oil changes on the 991 will be an easy DIY project given the location of the oil filter.
However, I have seen the small engine cover on the 991 in person and I'd bet that most maintenance DIY projects, such as air filter replacement, serpentine belt, MAF, throttle body, alternator, coolant tank, etc., will be a serious PITA.
Guess I won't be getting in line for the 991 anytime soon. That's just crazy, maybe Porsche has switched from beer breaks to something a little stronger.
Seeing stuff like that really makes me think they love "flipping the bird" to the DIYer. I'm not naive, I know they don't care.
I went to the local launch event at my dealer and I was left wanting when I saw the Dark Grey 991 S.
My wife said, "this is it?" I said, "yeah, I'm dissapointed too".
On the other hand, they had a beautiful 996 C4S and a gorgeous 993 C4S (i believe) in Arena red that I would take in a second.
At this point, the newes P-car I want to own is an 11 GTS 6speed. The oldest P-car I want to own? Sky is the limit!!
This would make me question the filtration capability in the new air filter. We have seen recommended oil change intervals increase from Porsche and now air filter service intervals. While I profess not to know squat behind that reasoning, I do know our planet is not getting cleaner for sure.
Thanks Mark, to have posted this Topic.
YES, this nothing else than Stupid design.
The good sense would be to have the most easier setup to maximize motivations to change oil often, as well as having a clean oil filter. Seems to me like an architect that would hang the toilet paper holder in the roof, (requesting a ladder to catch it).
Removing the tail lights are dead simple, at least on a 996, literally 1 bolt that is really easy to get to, and then the tail lamps slide right out. Sooo easy.
But removing the bumper? Cmon... I sure hope they made that easier than the 996, although it isn't terribly difficult it is certainly awkward, especially with one person.
The headlights are easy, too. But it's a pain in the butt to remove this stuff for a simple maintenance item. Then you need to watch the realignment for breakage on cheap plastic parts for the reinstall. Ask me how I know. Just a PITB.
50K? You can get a Turbo for that kind of money.
I'm not scared off by these kinds of things but I still consider them to be design flaws. Routine maintenance tasks shouldn't require you to remove body panels.

All engine service areas are uncovered in 15' minutes, says Porsche service technician. Bumper removal is really easy procedure. And then there seems to be more room than in previous models to work on.
OTH I can remove my car's rear bumper also in 15 minutes...
That was easier than removing the whole front bumper though.
Maybe this is all part of the strategy car manufacturers are using where if the buyer can't see the engine they assume its electric and a "green" vehicle!
probably takes two seconds with new Shprockets quick release latches...requiring special proprieatary tools of course... anyhoo draining the thing is the time-consuming part so does it really matter that you have to do five minutes of dismantling?
well, I mean really?
First, very little has to come off to do an oil change.
Second, to get the air filters, which need replacement every 40k miles, you need to remove the bumper cover.
Is this the easiest thing in the world? no...of course not.
Is it the end of the world? absolutely not.
Probably takes 20 minutes to remove all that stuff.
Why this is such a big deal I'm not sure.
HAHA +1
We're just ripping on the latest and greatest Pcar(911). It's a longstandng tradition.
Quad - I understand criticizing cars is not your thing, sorry if we have offended.
apparently!
Criticize whatever you want. Hell I criticize my own car probably more than anyone alive.
But whining about removing a 8lb piece of plastic to get to air filters every 40k miles (which is probably about every 8 years for the average owner) is a little silly no?
If you want to criticize, lets talk about how asinine porsche was when it comes to 993 spark plug wires.
