Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
Inspect engine for abnormal leaks and clean the engine safely
Leading evidence: 'Clean engine safely' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean engine safely' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

also a good time to inspect/replace SPARK PLUGS, hoses/tubing.

I would replace or at least inspect the following, if you don't intend to open the engine at all.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Right now the motor is being taken out of my 2002 C4 so the IMSB and RMS can be replaced. I am new to this and not very mechanical. I have read that the plastic impellors on the water pumps get brittle with age and break. Is this something that I should have replaced with a metal impellor while the motor is out? Does the motor need to be out to replace this part?
The car is a Tip, is there anything else that should be replaced while the motor is out?
The car has sat for a long time (3K miles in the last 6 years) and has under 40K miles on it.
Thanks!
I'd definitely do the AOS since it's a pain in the *** to access. The waterpump is easy in or out of the car. Do it if you want, but I wouldn't worry about it.
S.
No the motor does not have to be dropped.
As for the plastic impeller issue. This has been covered here many times. I will summarize for you, since I like to type. One of worlds most renown M96 engine builder has the following advice for us.
Basically, the advice is to NOT use a metal impeller because of the possibility of shaft separation making the engine case useless. Or bits of metal breaking off and lodging themselves in a coolant passageway causing a serious nightmare.
Interestingly enough, some say they have purchased a new water pump as a dealer item and it comes with a "metal like" impeller. Was that a genuine Porsche part? In any case, the expert is saying stick with the plastic and change it every 40k ish as a service item. It's not that hard to do, there are plenty of you tubes and write ups.
On the flip side. If a plastic impeller's fins break off, while your engine case is STILL GOOD because a metal impeller hasn't dug into and ruined the engine case ($6-8 for a used engine, $15-20k for a new engine), the recommendation is to LOCATE the broken pieces of water pump, even if that means engine tear down. Otherwise they might rear their ugly heads X miles down the road when the pieces have managed to block a coolant passage leading to complete engine failure. That is a doomsday scenario of course, but that is what we are being told.
GO WITH a GENUINE Porsche pump. Cheap knock offs are known to leak or separate from the shaft almost immediately.
On a 10 year old car. I would replace or at least inspect the following, if you don't intend to open the engine at all. Most of these are inexpensive items with exception of the water pump and torque converter.
Water pump (inspect or replace)
Thermostat (160 deg) (replace)
AOS (replace)
AOS tube orings (replace)
Oil cooler orings (replace)
SAI check valve and any related brittle tubing (replace)
If you remove the intake to get to the SAI system, new intake bolts and intake orings.
Any hoses that appear to be stiff, decaying, or frayed (inspect/replace)
Any bolts that appear to be rusting, covered in cosmoline is OK, but not rust (inspect/replace)
Consider replacing the coolant tank while the engine is out, they are known to crack (inspect, test, or replace)
Torque converter (inspect)
Inspect engine for abnormal leaks and clean the engine safely
Oil filler tube & oring (inspect, replace)
