I pulled the sender out cleaned the contact section which was dirty, adjusted the hoses inside the tank a bit and then installed the sender at just a slightly different positing so the float wouldn't hit the hoses.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

They kept the car another day and fixed the problem, but didn't indicate what it was.
So I have been lurking for a while since mid summer. I finally have reasonably good pictures of a freshly cleaned car. It's a CPO 2000 C4 Cab that I picked up in Rochester NY. I had a great time driving it back, although I got sunburned. I've done a couple of mods, the clear side markers, gauge rings, and a phatnoise instead of the CD changer. I'm attempting to install Sirius but I can't seem to get it nicely integrated into the console. I have a couple of newbie questions:
1) How quickly should the gas gauge indicate empty from a full tank? Mine is empty after 150 miles, but can be driven another 100 until it's really empty. The dealer says it's correct. Is it?
2) I've never seen my rims anywhere, are they actually from Porsche or some other maker?
3) When the car is not driven for a while (2 - 3 weeks), is it common for the battery to go dead? I've had to push the car out of the garage with my wife at least 2 times. It was absolutely no fun at all.
Okay so here are some pictures (I think).
Bob
Bob,
Looks fantastic.
1) That's bull**** from the dealer. I remember early C4's had a recall on the gas gauge, this usually occured when you filled up the car while the engine was running. Should be covered and fixed if this is the problem.
2) I've never seen those rims either. This will give you something to spend money on
3) Dead battery is common, go buy a trickle charger their not expensive and will keep your battery juiced.
Good luck!
Rob
Hi Bob,
1) Mine is pretty accurate. I never drive when it's "empty" empty but, I get on average around 250-300 miles per tank (using from 3/4 full to 1/4 full multiplied by 2).
2) Those are definately not OEM.
3) No. Although I don't leave my car for 3 weeks at a time, it
shouldn't
go dead. The proper solution is figuring out what's draining it, while the cheap solution is a battery tender. The cheap
est
solution is just to drive your car more, there's a lot of informal research that suggests that the cars that are driven more regularly tend to be healthier in the long run.
Enjoy your beautiful new car.
Welcome Bob! I too am very new to the 996 scene but have some insight to your inquiries.
1) When I picked up my 2001 996 I drove 250miles at a good clip before being near the big "E" 150 seems a little low.
2) don't know.
3) My car has been in the shed for about a month now and I started it up tonight for this first time since it's banishment and it fired up without hesitation.
Good luck with your new baby, you're gonna love it.
Welcome to the ZOO. Nice of you to post pics right away. Beautiful Cab! OK about Q's:
1. There is a TSB about fuel gage misreading (1/04 2066 Incorrect Fuel level Display In Instrument Cluster), but not sure ir applies to yours.
2. No idea...don't think so,
3. Mine lasts for several weeks no problem. You may need to check any drain on the system. Of course if it is an original battery, it may need replacing.
Lose the front plate! I haven't used one in NJ for 6 years. Front plates help the police shoot you with them Lazer radar guns. I'd rather pay the $50 ticket then $$$$ speeding ticket.
about your wheels, if you remove one or can't get a mirror back there you ought to be able to see a part number probably begining with 996. I suspect those are aftermarket wheels. Check out wheelenhancement.com they have all the stock wheels for every year 996 911 and Boxster.
my sirius
I noticed you bought your car from John Holtz. I bought an S4 from them years ago and had a pretty good experience. They even covered after the sale fixes they problably shouldn't have. If their Porsche dept is similar they should take care of you well.
Those are the stock 17" C4 wheels... oem for sure ... 1999 and 2000.
I have a 99 C4 ... something is wrong with your gauge for sure (I dont recall exactly but at 1/2, I have usually driven 150 miles or so.
Beautiful car!
And the prize goes to Mark.....you are correct, sir!

Great looking car. I love cabs with the hardtop on.
Thanks for the complements on the car. That fuel gauge, I thought the dealer was BSing me. Next time it goes in I will ask again. I think I'm going to go with the Costco battery, it looks like it's the original one in the car. John Holtz was not too terrific, after I paid they didn't want to release the car, first it was confirming it was a CPO then they claimed my bank checks didn't clear. It was't a transaction I would want again. But now that the car is in NJ, I take it to Paul Miller they seem good.
bob,
nice car.

we just had our new member meeting last night at mountain lake, NJ.
it sounds like lots of fun with all kind of activites!
Welcome and congratulations! I've only had my C2 for about 2.5 months, but I can't believe you guys who go WEEKS without driving it. Unless you have an even nicer car to drive, why let it sit? ;-) Mine rarely goes 24 hours uncranked.
John Holtz sales sucks - arrogant and unresponsive. Bought two Audis there. Service was ok, but then again, they were Audis so had free scheduled maintenance. Not a problem for you anymore since you're in NJ.
Nice car - right color, love the hardtop!
2000 Cab 4 here. Same wheels. I've got a problem with my gas gauge now too. I've been driving the car over a year so it's real obvious to me. The tank is definately full but the gauge is reading only about 3/4.
People have mentioned TSB 2066 but I can't find it on the net. Is there a list of these TSB's somewhere I can reference? And, if a TSB does apply to my model year, does that mean the dealer will fix it free even though the car is out of warranty?
TIA
Nope. The TSB is simply factory engineer's suggestions/recommendations for how to solve a problem or implement newer solutions to known conditions.
However, your dealer may goodwill the repair. I had TONS of work goodwilled on my old Boxster.
BTW, PCA autocross this weekend.
OP (original poster): great car and nice photos. Now you should get yourself an agressive aerokit. Congratulations!
perfectlap: Whats the purpose of extra mirror you have installed on your windshield? Also, is that the Terracotta interior or the Boxster red?
Thanks
Hey Kevin,
Yep I got the email. If you are going then I will go. I want to hear that PSE and see how much lower you look with RoW! Are you going for sure?
As far as goodwill goes, I don't see Jim Ellis doing anything that they can't overcharge for!
TSB's can be found on Renntech, but you must be a member to access them, and they are "view only".
There is a TSB #2015 dated 5/99 that addresses "Difficulty filling fuel tank" and "Running out of fuel due to incorrect fuel gauge reading".
Solution: "the routing of the flexible fuel hoses in the fuel tank must be modified. Additionally, on the 911 Carrera 4, it must be ensured that the jet pump end caps are in place and the connections for the two jet pump lines are properly connected." The TSB then provides instructions for this work.
As for the PCA AX Sunday, I am signed up, and planning to run.
Actually it interesting this post came back to life. I just got the gas gauge fixed by the dealer last week, it works correctly now. I have no idea what they did, but mine was showing empty after 100 miles. So this time they said the computer was reading 2.2 gallons, and the gauge was indicating where 2.2 should be. I asked them to fill the car and see if they would get 14.7 gallons in the tank (I think its a 16.9 gallon tank), turns out it only took like 10 gallons. They kept the car another day and fixed the problem, but didn't indicate what it was. From what I have read on other posts, they have to recalibrate the computer level sensing equipment.
My 2000 C4 had the somewhat infamous not reading full problem. Mine would only read 3/4. This is nothing to be scared of. I pulled the sender out cleaned the contact section which was dirty, adjusted the hoses inside the tank a bit and then installed the sender at just a slightly different positing so the float wouldn't hit the hoses. No special tools required and very easy to do. I was able to loosen the large nut by hand wearing a good pair of gloves.
**before buying a new battery i would have your current battery tested...several people have posted that their battery drains after 2 weeks. this is not normal as i leave my car sitting for 5 weeks w/no battery drain.
there could very well be a short or something similar from someone messing with the wiring for stereo/alarm/etc..
About the battery, once you know it's ok, be sure to lock the car even when it's in the garage. If you leave it unlocked, a number of the electrical systems will stay on and it Will drain the battery. Locked -- it shuts down those systems and after a week, shuts down even more automatically (like the keyless door entry).
Sorry - can't tell you all of them. Some include interior lighting (depending on options). You can even hear the fuel pump cycle for a while after you shut down, but haven't locked the car.
Your manual notes this issue. This is not a shortcoming. They keep things like the fuel pump cycling to prevent vapor lock & help the car restart easily. But then, locking indicates you're going to leave it for a while so it goes to a lower energy consumption -- then further lowers after about a week. (You'll know it's done this because your remote won't work and you'll have to reset it with the key.)
Regardless, if you're going to leave it for 2-3 weeks, even if the battery won't run down, a trickle charger is worthwhile to maximize the life of your battery.
Note that on rare occasions, trickle chargers have malfunctioned and cooked batteries. If you will regularly keep you battery on a trickle charger, consider using a simple house timer to only turn on the charger for 1-3 hours per day. That's plenty of time to top off a battery, but not long enough to cook a battery should it fail.
Good luck with the new car.
James
