Suggestion

I would recommend shelling out a few hundred for a pro detailer to polish the car though, it looks like you have a bit of swirls in the paint.

The part cost around $40 and is pretty easy to replace especially if you have another set of hands to help.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

27 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Today was officially the best road trip of my life. I think I'm in love. Last week, with the help of a couple of Rennlisters, I spotted a 2004 40th Anniversary 996 with only 39K miles and 3 more years of warranty in San Diego for a great price. I flew down from my home in the SF Bay area to consummate the deal today, and couldn't have been more impressed with the condition of the car. The drive was spectacular. Got home a short while ago, and a big smile is still on my face. Of course, I had to stop a few times along the way for pics. Here are my 16 favorites, taken in Santa Barbara on the pier, and at Gaviota Beach near Lompoc. Was fortunate to get pretty good light with the setting sun. Hope you like them. Oh, btw, one little problem: when I got home, one of the headlight washer caps (chrome, about 2" oval) was missing. Easy/cheap replacement? Is this common?

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

One more. Certainly a drive to remember.

POST 3Original post

Congratulations! That's a lovely car. I am sure you'll be enjoying it for a while.

POST 4Original post

Awesome pictures and many more smiles to come I'll bet...

POST 5Original post

Headlight washer cap is a very common problem. The very first time I tried them out on my car both of them blew right off. Fortunately they didn't damage the paint as they went sailing pass the car. The part cost around $40 and is pretty easy to replace especially if you have another set of hands to help. I swabbed a little bit of epoxy glue on one side of the pivot point under the cap figuring that would hold it in place but I never use them anyway. Lots of threads on this. Beautiful car.... Great pics!

POST 6Original post

Congrats again and thanks for sharing the pics! P.S. Now wipe that grin off your face

POST 7Original post

Congrats # 26. Nice to have a road trip as your first experience in the car. The 40 year is a great package eh?

POST 8Original post

Congrats on the new car! +1 on the washer cap. Easy, cheap fix. Dont let a dealer try to convince you that you have to buy the whole 200.00 assembly and cant buy just the cap like mine did. 40 bucks at Suncoast Porsche. Enjoy the ride!

POST 9Original post

Wow, super! Love the pics and the car, best of luck!

POST 10Original post

Sweet ride. What a great opportunity for you to buy a car and be able to spend hours driving it directly after the purchase. That's a great ride (from SD to SF) as well. Did you drive along the coastal highway all the way?

POST 11Original post

very cool, that must have been an amazing drive home Matt

POST 12Original post

congrats and great pics all around. The 40AE looks super; great find, now it's time to get up close and personal on your "new" car and rack up the miles. Warranty and all of 39K miles on that car begs for use. Keep it clean inside and out and you'll appreciate it even more. IF it's your DD, then just take some added precautions where you park and work or where ever you go. Cheers, Ed.

Passenger (right) side headlight washer cover is part # 99662814400. Drivers (left) side is # 99662814300.

POST 16Original post

Great pictures. Now go drive the heck out of it

POST 17Original post

Congrats and welcome! Another Bay Area 996! Cool choice and glad you get to drive her home Which route did you take? Hwy 5 or along the coast?

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 9178424

Took the 5 from SD to LA, then hopped on the 101 along the coast thru Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. Didn't have time to take PCH between SLO and Monterey, which is my favorite stretch of scenery in the world past Big Sur. But I'll be back.

POST 19Original post

I love the 911 40th rare car indeed! What a nice scenery to drive through too. Another good choice is Carmel by the Sea gorgeous area.

POST 21Original post

Beautiful shape the car is in. I guess the wiper in the back will help when travelling through the LA area and they are spraying malathion Looks like a super car and I'm sure you are enjoying it.

POST 22Original post

Very nice. 40th is a very special car. Enjoy it!!

POST 23Original post

Car looks great and you did a professional job on the pics. I drove around town last night for about an hour and had a huge smile on my face, so I can only imagine how you felt on one of the most picturesque routes to drive in the US.

POST 24Original post

Looks great. Don't fret about the caps; happens to all of us. I would recommend shelling out a few hundred for a pro detailer to polish the car though, it looks like you have a bit of swirls in the paint. Not trying to hate, but if you're like me you want it to look its best! The car does look good and I'm jealous of the warranty. Mine had 42k when I bought it in 2009 and I'm closing in on 70k already.

POST 25Original post

Welcome to the Anniversary Club. Enjoy all that it is. Don't for get to add your name to the thread along with the other 911 AE owners.

POST 26Original post

Gaviota beach and pier are a very special place indeed.....
