Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After dreaming since I was a teenager of owning a 911, finally at the age of 43 bought one for my birthday. I will not ask "silly" questions. I have been reading about the 996 "problems" for years now (lurking). The IMS, the "Intermix", the RMS, the coolant tank, the water pump, etc..... Well, I did not care...I finally could afford one, and bought it. Drove it from Virginia to NC (250 miles). Forgot about all worries the moment I got in the cockpit; hit I-64 and then I-95. During a stretch in NC, got up to 115MPH....Nice 1999 Convertible with 42.5K miles, 6 speed. All service records since new, no leaks anywhere. Original engine. It will need a new clutch at some point, will bring it to a good independent Porsche shop and will do the IMS at that time. In the meantime, I will drive it like I stole it. Should I worry?, may be....but will not. I will drive it and will enjoy every second of it....until something happens....or hopefully it will never happen... I have seen cars being sold with 80K, 90K and 120K miles, so mine is going to be one of those (at least that is my thinking) A couple of pics from the ride...I love it....I am as excited as a little kid....

POST 12Original post

Welcome aboard! Congrats on the ride and enjoy driving her! I believe that as long as you keep up with maintenance (really not as bad as people say) and down the road do the preventive stuff you should be fine. BTW... I see there were some upgrades done already, but please do the clear side markers

POST 14Original post

Very nice. Best of luck with it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine. BTW, it looks oddly familiar to me...

POST 15Original post

Ewwww ahhhhhh niiiiiiccccce! Pine trees in NC are on steroids when it comes to pollen time. At FT Bragg you could wash your car the night before then the next morning your car is yellow. Good luck and just driving around will pick up a lot of that pollen so have plenty of plans and supplies for keeping it purdy like it is there jim bob Had to say that since you are from NY living south now Car looks great. Enjoy

POST 33Original post

Sounds like you are as much in love as I am. I bought my 1999 996 coupe in November, 2nd owner, 42K miles, factory aero w/18" wheels, ocean blue. I just bought a new set of sumi's today and man what a difference it made in the drive. Like you, I have read all the scary stuff about the '99 996, I had mine checked out immediately by my mechanic and had several "porsche buddies" drive my car. My mechanic just pressure washed the underside so we can watch for oil leaks, which is what I understand the most important thing to look for. You will find these guys on the forum are a wealth of valuable information.

POST 37 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I want to thank all members for making me feel so welcome... I will not be able to mod for a while....budget will not allow it. Budget allows only for preventive maintenance and regular maintenance. Now the "silly" questions I said I was not going to ask.. 1.- From the PPI the tech said I probably will need a clutch replacement in the next 10K miles. There was not a drop of oil anywhere, hence no RMS or IMS leak. But, since the transmission is going to be out, I am thinking of RMS, IMS and AOS replacement in addition to the clutch. Makes Sense? 2.- I love the look of the stock radio, but hate the fact that it does not have an AUX input in the front, the CD player does not play MP3's, and the buttons are sticky !?!?. I do not want an aftermarket radio. Does this radio have any inputs in the back that can be moved to the front? (RCA, 1/8 miniplug, etc...). And what can be done about sticky *****? Here we go....now ask me to do a search....LOL

POST 38Original post

Quotes source post: 8266666

1. yup make sense... though rms... if it aint broke. .... ehh its cheap enough. 2. There is a thingy (do a search ) you can buy to disconnect the cd player and use your ipod. As for the sticky *****.... well , I wont say it. If lube (electronic cleaner) doesnt work... you can always buy used on ebay.

POST 40 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My own quote: "I will not be able to mod for a while....budget will not allow it. Budget allows only for preventive maintenance and regular maintenance." Well as it turns out, a friend brought to my attention 4 mods that the car already has: 1.- Short throw shift 2.- Pedals set 3.- Cluster set 4.- Cup holders I was able to confirm the above from the receipts in the binder the previous owner gave me (also see picture). These are 2 mods I am already working on: 1.- One touch convertible open and close, very nice for 80.00 bucks 2.- Got the rear spoiler switch for the dash, plan to wire and install this weekend - 30 bucks Thanks for the replies on the radio issues. Will also do the fix on the ***** (From Pedro's garage), and will get the harness for the Aux input in the back of the radio; that will be another 30.00 - not bad. Total about 150.00

you had to wait until you were 49 you young wippersnapper?????????????.. I had to wait until I was 70. Even then I didn't know I was getting one until my wife bought me a 99 C2 Cab as a suprise birthday presant. It was waiting for me as I opened the garage after arriving back from the UK last April. I was 70 in October. I was told to use it during the summer even though my birthday presant came 6 months earlier than the actual date. I didn't need asking twice. I do all my own preventative maintenance. Oil, filter, brakes, coolant, serpentine belt, front of car off and rads cleaned. etc etc.. dreading the time it needs new plugs lol. Oh and I defo drive it like I stole it. nothing less than 2000 revs .. usually 2500 and it runs as clean as a mountain stream. ,
