Anyhow, I've used the Actron on uncounted other cars of family, friends and co-workers.

Suggestion
The fancier models have some good data logging and serial/USB interfaces to move the data from the device to your PC (working from memory so before you buy check the features).

Took the cable and laptop for a crusie and read things after a warm up and saved a couple of files on tests and reset the fault code of the charcoal filter shutoff tripping.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Any reason I can't head to Harbor Freight while their sale is on, and get either the simple $42 (on sale) version, or go for the "deluxe" $96 version?
The pricier version includes EOBD scanner plus code reader. Assume it's worth it, just so that I can conquer my future CEL codes?
Thanks.
A very good reason: you can get a bluetooth OBDII reader for $20 online ($25 shipped), which coupled with free software will turn your smartphone into something straight out of Fast and the Furious. As in real-time monitoring of O2 sensors, rpm, speed, throttle position, fuel/air mixture, mass air flow rate, etc. And can datalog it. And it reads/clears codes, too.
IG, by "AP" do you mean "app," as in application? Or "AP" as in "Associated Press," "Access Point," or any other denom of the two-letter phrase?
Would love to, except the phone belongs to work. It sounds like I should hold off on a self-contained unit and look into a better kit to be used with a computer, such as those previously mentioned on this board. More info is better, so if there are recs, I'll search 'em out.
Actually, come to think of it, I have an old iPhone sitting around, dead (no WiFi) but otherwise works and can act as an iPod. Would that do it, do you think? Or do I need 3G/WiFi to actually "connect" to something. Again, recs appreciated. I dig tech.
Thanks.
It's actually the Durametric I was thinking of; would rather turn my unused laptop into a car computer than get an app or a reader, so with three (two and a half) votes, I'll look in that direction. Thanks.
My bad. On most boards I wouldn't ask but my limitation in the language of all things auto, German, or Porsche forces my hand. Most definitely could have meant some random part and that the secret Porsche code implied a tech part of which I was not aware.
By the way, where does the end of this thing plug in?
No, no; even
I
can do that...
I got a cheap one off Ebay 3 years ago. Think I paid something like $30 shipped. Does what I need it to do. I can look up the codes online if I need to. Works on all 3 of my OBDII cars and I help others out all the time. Small, and fits in my passenger door side pocket.
Anyone have a link to where I can buy durametric for $20?
So long as it's got bluetooth, it should work, be it phone or laptop.
Edit: discovered after making this post that the iphone's bluetooth is restricted and doesn't work with BT OBDII readers, just wifi ones. WinMo and Android work great with them, though.
Not going to find one that cheap. Used, they go for $175+, new around $300. Make sure that you get the newest version. The earlier version had some limitations.
CarMD. You can save THOUSANDS of dollars in repairs with the CarMD.

(I'm kidding. I watched an infomercial about it at lunch and almost fell out of my chair laughing. I'm thankful that another OBD thread was started so I can share the mirth.)

I have this OBDII reader:

Without realizing the ramifications, I bought mine from dealextreme... which is in hong kong... a week before chinese new year. Took a month to arrive, doh! There are
other vendors
online for similar prices.
I'm using Torque on my android phone, which is custom configurable with multiple screens and all sorts of dials, readouts and graphs and datalogging options.

I can attest this combo is fully compatible with my 986S; virtually every OBDII mode reports.
Other software:
PalmOS, PocketPC & Laptop:

Apple apparently restricts the bluetooth port on iphones, so you'd have to get a wifi version if you have an iphone, bluetooth ones won't work.
thats what I thought.... Durametric would make a killing if they made a handheld unit that can be upgraded for new models... carrying a laptop at the track sucks.
Am I missing something here or are the guys at O'reilly's not that smart? Check engine light came on. Steady orange, everything working fine. They told me that their INNOVA scanner doesn't work on "pink/purple" OBDII plugs. The $89 scanner only or the $139 scan/remove codes wouldn't work. A mechanic that was there said Porsche/BMW/Audi/ etc were different. I didn't drive the 996, so they didn't check it with their big scanner. I'm just looking for a code scanner that reads & removes them. I've read several threads from guys purchasing scanners at Harber Freight and O'reilly's. Sorry to highjack thread, just didn't want to start a new bandwith sucking new one...
Pink is 996 & black is my DD:
OBDII is OBDII, it's a standard and always compatible. There's extra fancy stuff you can access with a durametric, but any OBDII reader should be able to check and clear your codes. I hit up the auto parts stores for free code checks/clears all the time (advance, autozone, etc.)
Before you drop $140 on that... If you've got something you can interface it to, I highly recommend the $20 bluetooth reader one I posted a little up the page.
^^^ disagree. Any obd2 reader will not clear all error codes (airbags)... some will work on carreras while the same one wont work on turbo. Some codes are unique to Porsche and alot of universal readers will connect and view errors but can not clear all codes.
Air Bag and ABS are different, as they're part of different controllers, and not a standard OBDII PID. It's going to be hit or miss with any EOBD2 stuff. I can add custom PIDs to mine via software, but messing with the wrong PID can really mess the car up, so I haven't tried.
AFIAK the color of the connector has no bearing on what protocol the car supports.
Now it could be the parts store id'd one of the cars having a protocol that particular scanner did not support. Some support all but PWM, and CAN. Some support CAN but not PWM. Some support all OBD2 protocols.
I have an older Actron that works just fine in my 02 Boxster, my 03 Turbo, and in my 08 Cayman S. It does not work in any CAN vehicle though the newer Acton units do support CAN.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Thank you gentlemen. I just couldn't get a definite answer from anyone I called but knew I'd get the answer here eventually. Going to purchase this one today. I don't really need anything too fancy, I'm just looking for a mid-grade model to check/clear codes. I'll give my analysis later...

As Macster stated above, the Actron should be fine for the purposes you describe. I have the CP9180 that I purchased for less than $100 on sale from advance. I have used it on several cars including my 996 and the GT3. It has several functions that are quite useful if you drill down far enough, including MAF, coolant temp, fuel trim, sensor voltages, etc. I do like the portability of the Actron. The DME manual from Porsche is a must if you are chasing something complex.
Definitely.
Actron is just a good but bog standard OBD2 code reader data viewer. The fancier models have some good data logging and serial/USB interfaces to move the data from the device to your PC (working from memory so before you buy check the features).
The Durametric is probably more money (though maybe not by much than a top of the line Actron unit) and is specifically for Porsches and allows you into areas of the car's electronics the Actron can't.
The Durametric is limited to just one or several cars, and more cars cost more money. The Actron you can move it from any OBD2 compliant car to any other with no problems.
I've had an Actron unit now since shortly after I bought my '96 Mustang GT in '96 and it has served me quite well through a half dozen cars most recently the 02 Boxster, a VW Golf TDI, a GTO (but I did buy a Predator for this car just to give me deeper access to the car's electronics: I turned off that damned skip shift feature), a Cayman S and the Turbo.
Kind of funny but all of these cars (save the GTO) have been ISO/KWP, even the 08 Cayman S. It had a CAN bus but that was to talk to the radio, heater, etc. It was referred to by the Porsche docs as the comfort bus. Oh, the GTO was CAN.
Anyhow, I've used the Actron on uncounted other cars of family, friends and co-workers. The cable developed a crack and I had a tech here at the office replace it. Done and as good as new.
However, you really need to read the specs on both devices and other similar devices as well and decide what features you really need.
Sincerely,
Macster.
+1 for the Actron. It works fine on my 996 and my two Jeeps, plus half a dozen co-workers and neighbors' car/trucks.
That being said, i want the aforementioned Fast & Furious app for my iPhone
That $130 Actron Reader worked just fine.
I got codes, P0300 (Random- Multiple Misfire Detected) & P0302 (Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected) *both from Mod 11*
From the research I found on here, it sounds like my fuel/air mixture may have been off due to pulling it outta the garage to wash/wax her that day, or bad coil pack. I cleared it and gonna see if it comes back. I've pulled it in and out quickly before with no code though. She ran fine that day, but hadn't ran her since clearing code.
Durametric sets theirs to only work with 3 different porsches then locks out any further trys of reading any other serial numbered cars. Others you can do the whole town. I think I read Durametric will reset your devise if you change cars or something like that. Not all too sure but they can reset the thing. Hackers busy screwing everybody and not telling us how to reset our durametrics. Miserable times for sure.
I like the durametrics save the scans tp excel file format and such. Had a CEL yesterday and suspected it was the same as last years CEL and it was. Took the cable and laptop for a crusie and read things after a warm up and saved a couple of files on tests and reset the fault code of the charcoal filter shutoff tripping.
First time I got the CEL was rainy early morning fly to work. Yesterday was after lots of rain earlier with drizzle going on. Lacking taking a chance on a ticket I was doing heavy downshifting. I'm not sure if the first time I had nearly a newly topped off tank but this last time was within a day of topping off. It's best to not double tap the gas tank filling or stuff like that charcoal filter CEL with happen. I guess I'm sloshing gas up to the tube some times. Kind of annoying CEL to get.
I wish the durametric could read the temps and other results and estimate the octane. I know the ethanol 92 octane can't realy be that octane over here. Can't expect a lab packed into a simple cable now though can we
