things have to evolve and change for advancements to be made, and i agree with you, Porsche has indeed made the change for the better, and they are making alot more ground with this technology.

Another point being the dry sump system-if it was a full dry sump- I really don't think that would have changed people's mind to convert- it really comes down to styling.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In history there is a beginning and and end and with cars it seems the best of any seems to be the first and the last being the end and I'm damn happy to be part of the beginning of the first. I'm really impressed(more awed) that PAG took such a drastic change IMHO for the better. At this point from what I read on most forums mainly 993 versus 996 that main gripes with the 996 has been its styling. Another point being the dry sump system-if it was a full dry sump- I really don't think that would have changed people's mind to convert- it really comes down to styling. In races it's not how you look but what makes you win and the watercooled deserves its day at its infancy. I do not think racers think for one moment that when the time comes that when winning races who really gives one crap how cars look but how it performs and you gotta say that it seems PAG is ludigrous to not sponsor races and all but damn look how privateers have gone there way to try to win(TRG for example) and have succeeded. I'm glad to be part of that heritage that I'm the beginning and the end will be fruitful aka GT3. Poser's look for styling , enthusiasts look for performance-I can honestly tell you more 996's out there will be driven more then any other 911-it's a drivers car for the street and the track. I'm going to be the first and the last of the 996-it's in my blood.Regards. Mike

POST 2Original post

a true porsche isnt water cooled! JUST KIDDING! as much as i love aircooled porsches, i have to agree with you, they milked their aircooled technology for all they could get. things have to evolve and change for advancements to be made, and i agree with you, Porsche has indeed made the change for the better, and they are making alot more ground with this technology. speaking of having fisrt and last.. maybe you can have somthing like this someday (but yours will be water cooled of course, but you get the idea). jerry seinfelds 'First' and 'last' of the aircooled, his 1964 911, and his 1998 Porsche Carrra 4S hopfully you can have your own fisrt and last with the watercooled. i think it would be really cool

POST 3Original post

As I understand the history of air cooled motors, they were developed by Porsche and Tatra (Czech manfacturer) because the cars would run in the cold winters in Germany. Some people consider the air cooled sort of oil cooled as well, so maybe all Pcar motors were "liquid" cooled...some air/oil and now anti-freeze/oil. Maybe that brings the 2 groups closer together

POST 4Original post

actually youre right don. the air cools the oil hense cools the engine. what we have instead of a radiator or whatever is literally called an oil cooler. you can get em, put em up front, run lines up there from the engine, take out your fog lights and you have a better oil cooler cause airs goin right into it head on, rather than through the grill (sorry if im making no sense.. no sleep.. school projects) basically air cooled and oil cooled are the exact same thing.

POST 5Original post

I agree with the assessment. The 993 was the best of the air cooled but Porsche, hampered by noise and emission regulations and the desire to create a more powerful and efficient powerplant, had to go to water cooling. I am a fan of the styling of the 993 and the sound, especially with RSR mufflers. Plus I like the smaller dimensions. However, you have got to like the 996 motor. FYI, the ultimate 996, the GT3 uses an oil cooling system similar to the 993, according to all the car mags.

POST 6Original post

For the less informed like me about the matter, how could an engine be so efficient and still not rely on water cooling? I know most of cars boil to fire point when they lack water and they got two or three air cooling fans, so how does an air cooled engine keep its cool? waz

POST 7Original post

its not fans that keep it cool per-say. the air cools the oil through an oil cooler, the oil will then cool the engine as it travel through it. heres an article found on a web site. porsche air cooled system works just like the VW air cooled system Engine Air-Cooling The Volkswagen cooling system is neat and simple. A multi-bladed turbo fan is mounted on a shaft which is simply an extension of the generator armature shaft. It rotates in a sheet steel, semi-circular housing, drawing in air through the fan centre and directing it down to each pair of finned cylinders. The cylinders are shrouded above with carefully designed sheet steel covers. Below each pair of cylinders a contoured deflection plate is mounted centrally. Thus the air is directed over the full surface area of the cylinder cooling fins. In order to shorten the warming up time a thermostat is mounted below the right hand pair of cylinders. This is a conventional bellows type and it operates a restriction on the through flow of air when the engine is cold. The thermostat opens flaps in the fan housing when the engine warms up, so allowing the full airflow to pass round the cylinders. Also in this fan housing, bolted to the top of the crankcase, is an oil cooler that stands up in the stream of air like a radiator and cools the oil, which is pumped through it.

POST 8Original post

Hey Harry...what have you decided about your trip?

POST 9Original post

Thanks for the information. Just out of curiousity, how many quarts of oil does a standard 996 require for an oil change? I believe the 993 uses approx. 12 quarts as did my old 964. Because of the change from "air" to "water", does it require less oil?

POST 10Original post

Don.. im still strugling to make a decision. my heart is there, and my head is saying F- it be a man go for it. but my bank account isnt looking too thrilling. gonna take a look at all my options this weekend, and talk to my dad. (im assuming ill live on rommen noodles for a few more mos to cut back more LOL!!) adscab, i would assume it uses less oil too, but honestly i have no idea on how much either uses.

POST 11Original post

Harry, figure out how much you'll think you will need for the trip and let's see what happens. Do you have a drop dead date for having to make a decision?

POST 12Original post

not sure if there is a deadline to register. i have no idea how much i will need. a freind on the 912 board suggested 3-4k (gas, hotel, food, car necesities oil and what not, as well as just in case cash for emergencies) i know for a fact i cant come up with that kinda cash by then. maybe 1 or 1500 if im lucky.. like i said im really budgeted. as i mentioned im thinking of finding a different job.. so what i might do is find another job and work my current one on the side so i can get more cash, then quit the 1st one before i leave. if i did that i could get closer to that goal. but thats gona be tough to do on top of a few classes over the summer.

POST 13Original post

A water-cooled engine has a water jacket encasing the cylinders which transfers the heat of combustion from the cylinders to the radiator via the coolant. An air-cooled engine has no water jacket. Cool air is directed around cooling fins on the outside of the cylinders, transfering heat away from the engine, hence air-cooling. The oil also removes heat from the engine as stated in other posts. Of course a water-cooled engine transfers its heat to the air through a radiator and is therefore, ultimately, also air-cooled. Ian '84 911 targa, '87 928s4
