I think that rubber bits from the rear tires landing on the headers and mufflers, and then cooking off, adds a nice complexity to the "hard driven Porsche" smell, which definitely changed for my car when I replaced its Michelins with Hankooks.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Lately I have noticed a pretty strong smell of burned oil after high rev fast driving. However, there are no oil drops under the car. My white carage floor is spotless. Is this normal, typical or is something horribly wrong...? The car is 996 C2 1999 model manual transmission, 50 tmiles. The car just had a large service at Porsche Center.

POST 2Original post

Normal. It is the smell of victory! or cosmoline. it's one of those. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBksHaTQCbU

POST 3Original post

If the dealership resprayed cosmoline (the protective goop under the car) then that is definitely it. Unless your oil level starts dropping unusually i really wouldnt worry about it.

POST 4Original post

It is the smell of a happy, driven Porsche. Mine does it everytime I drive...not to worry.

+1 I think that rubber bits from the rear tires landing on the headers and mufflers, and then cooking off, adds a nice complexity to the "hard driven Porsche" smell, which definitely changed for my car when I replaced its Michelins with Hankooks.

POST 7Original post

the trick is to drive it that way SOOO many times it quits smelling that way it will take about 35+ years

POST 8Original post

That reminds me of my last Porsche, a '79 SC...it smelled inside and outside with the odor of burnt oil, all the time, but it was a great Porsche to drive and own.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you buddies for your posts! I did a trip around google for about a hour and found tons of topics around internet about this. Very, very common thing. Started regretting posting this topic since mine was propably the hundrieth one....expected some "use search" kind of replies. Thanks guys for staying positive. Just came back from some pedal to the metal driving, enjoyed every second of it - like every time I take her out. What a great great great car!
