Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Given that the most complicated job I've done on this car was to replace the spark plugs, is this something you would all recommend I try to perform on my own?

And as a best practice I usually let the car run about 5 minutes after a session just to make sure it has ample opportunity to cool off.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was on the track today and got black-flagged because my car let out a huge puff of smoke after one corner. In the pits I got checked out and no one saw any leaks or other issues so I continued. Later before the next run when I started the car it let out another huge cloud of smoke but after about 30 seconds it cleared up. This happened twice more so in my research it seems like my AOS is about to give up. Does this seem like a correct assessment? Since I have an 02 with a manual transmission, is this job somewhat easier and does it really require dropping the engine (or at least lowering it slightly?) If I do dare to tackle this job should I think about doing anything else while I'm in there? I'd hate to have to do this again because of some other parts I should replaced at the same time.

POST 2Original post

Normal for track use. Mine did the same. There is a DIY on Renntech if u nerd to replace it.

POST 3Original post

there is a tsb.... that you should run .5 quart less oil, and you put in a new recalibrated dipstick. Also, let the car idle a few minutes before shutting the car off after a session. It may not be aos related, but an overfill issue... just sayin.

I just searched on Renntech and found it...Thanks! I had read that before so I made sure to have the oil where it was just below the center line on the electronic gauge. Is that low enough? And as a best practice I usually let the car run about 5 minutes after a session just to make sure it has ample opportunity to cool off. The strange thing about it though is if I start it up immediately after turning it off it doesn't smoke. Or even if I wait 10 minutes it's okay. But if I wait 30 minutes then I get the James Bond smokescreen feature! It was sort of embarrassing as I had the be the one with the smoking car...

POST 5Original post

ohh, speaking of the AOS... I'll be tackling that job this coming weekend.. Not looking forward to it.

not sure, Im not familiar with the mk2 gauges.... I usually rely on the stick, and I think the tsb references the dipstick only.

Does the updated dipstick look different?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok so I've read as much as I can on replacing this AOS. Given that the most complicated job I've done on this car was to replace the spark plugs, is this something you would all recommend I try to perform on my own? It seems like it's pretty straightforward but just time consuming. It's just I also read where you may have to lower the engine for easier access and that's something I've never attempted. Thoughts?

POST 10Original post

It looks more complex than the plugs. But still the plugs are not fun. If you can the plugs I would think you could do the AOS. Just take your time and gave the proper tools. Lowering the motor looks the easy part of the AOS job.

I live in Charlotte, so if you want to attempt the AOS I have tools and will travel to lend a hand. Let me know if you would like help. Charles

That's what I thought as well. Looks like I'll take the plunge! Thank you for the offer! My plan is to take care of it while the family is away on an extended school field trip. So I'll be working on it after work in the evenings - I planned on doing it the nights of June 1-3. I've got a decent amount of tools but of course they're only as good as the person using them! I'll reach back out to you as the time gets closer. Thanks again!
