Maybe I'm expecting too much due to the few cars I've passed on in the past, but I'm not willing to spend $10k on a dead 99 996, that's just too much money when perfectly well running cars can be had for $16k or so.

On a car in need of an engine, you also have to factor in the fact that the car has to be transported and can't be test driven, which should detract from price also.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looking for a 996 with a blown motor. Must be manual transmission, everything else is unimportant.
Ready to build a DE/track day car and why not start from the bottom up.
Feel free to PM me, or email at ddolmage (at) gmail.com
Thanks in advance guys!
Pass that list along!
I've looked for a while, found one possible car in CA, deal never materialized. Please do pass info along if you end up deciding against a car!
I'll check that one out, but 11k for 204k miles with a coolant milkshake seems high to me. It's worth seeing if he's willing to consider a more reasonable offer however.
Thanks guys, keep 'em coming, I know there's a car out there with my name on it. I missed out on that white one this morning by hours. Would have been perfect for me.
Dave, I figured Baltimore would be a bit far for you? I don't mean to be mooching off your thread if you can do cars on the east coast.
BTW, what exactly is a 2001 Carrera S? Hah...
HA - yea....
well 3 weeks ago a guy came in and was handed his options (you know the ones)
he doens have/nor want to spend the money, he financed the car (IIRC a 99 or 00) and is $28k in debt on it...he is sort of stuck - dont think he can sell it to you for $3500
then an 05' with 24k miles....(boxster S) same thing...that one might get some help from porsche based on miles so it left and headed to dealer for eval.
another one Tuesday where the bolt on the bearing broke broke the bearing could be removed (we are calling it s save!!) guy just bought it and part of the buy was an IMSR - smart guy as we think that bolt was about to pop off - the shop has done quite a few of these and I will not speculate on the what ifs... but I have seen my share of "too lates" too
just on the "too lates" the owners dont always have options to sell cheap - Jake Raby keeps a list of cars that are available...
Emailed Jake, his list is apparently only open to those who are looking to buy a 20k motor from him and have him install it.
That's not where I'm looking to go right now, and I'm not comfortable with the fact that the warranty goes out the window the moment you track/autocross the car.
I know a lot of guys end up upside down on these things when the motor blows, which is why I've been hunting around at the dealers. If you're that far under then you've got to be trading it in, because what else are you going to do...
Thanks for keeping an eye out guys, I appreciate all of the finds that have come up so far...
I haven't been able to find a car that needs an engine either. I'm just about ready to give up. Good luck to you sir (and let me know if you find something on the east coast!).
One's bound to turn up at some point. Too many motor issues with too many cars for one not to turn up.
Biggest issue seems to be that most overpaid, and end up well upside down when the motor goes, which means they really don't have a choice but to fix it...
Jake, I'd still like to see your list, even though I'm not interested in one of your motors. Plenty of folks are looking for a 911 project, why not help out the community and share with the rest of us?
I have to be honest, doesn't give me a good feeling about doing any future business with you, you're attitude seems to suggest that you don't need a customer like me.....
Maybe he's not, but still.
Still looking for a car guys, appreciate any leads you can throw my way.
And Kie, I'm guessing that 6k is about the going rate for a 996 6spd with a blown motor.
Anyone else want to chime in with a number?
There's one in the classifieds in Panorama. I have it in front of me.
2001 911 Carrera 4 Cab, blk/blk, great shape 51,000 mi, blown engine (IMS), put in a new one & you'll have a nice car. $12,000....
Contact details are in the ad.
Do I get a finder's fee for that?
Not affiliated with the seller but saw this on Craiglist here in NorCal for $8k and could probably get it down a little...

David
There was a guy here on rennlist that sold his for around $5500. I wanted it but I'm on the east coast and he preferred to stay local. $10k for an early c2 that needs an engine is too much when you can buy a running one for $16k...
Actually, if I was going to buy a boxster, there's a guy doing a WRX Sti swap into one over on NASIOC, and the mechanicals look amazing, not to mention those Subaru engines are bulletproof until you really start cranking up the boost...
I get mine ready for sale and I will put it up for $16,900, here in Seattle you will not get more for a 996 C2 with 100k Mls. I will do a service in the next weeks (filter, oil, sparks, belt, fuel filter) so if someone is interested let me know. The car is silver, original engine, clutch done at around 85k Mls, AOS done, new passenger side window regulator, good Sumitomos (235/285) on 18" rims.
15k seems to be the price of a running driving no issues car these days. I've been seeing them all over CL.
For 6k, I'm still assuming that I'm going to have 5k into motor work, and honestly, I'd rather build it myself. I'm competent, good with tools, and I'd rather have a car with a clutch I installed, a newer RMS, and the updated IMS.
Admittedly, the cars for sale here, and on other enthusiast sites are priced higher. However, I'd expect any car from a seller on this forum to be pretty much mint. That being said, mint isn't important to me. I'm going to run it at the track, and I'm going to drive it every day in Los Angeles, and at night I'm going to park it on the street. (Don't cry for it, it'll be be next to the neighbor's 997 cab)
These cars are out there, and they're getting cheaper. I've seen a few promising cars on CL, but honestly, getting CL sellers to return phone calls or emails seems to be a huge hassle, (If you want to sell it, answer your phone, return voice-mails. If it's sold, let me know, and I'll quit calling)
It'll turn up, and like I said, I'll pay a finder's fee for the right car.
I agree with a lot of your points, but every car has it's downsides. I just helped a friend of mine deal with Subaru of North America try to cover his 2008 STi under warranty after the engine broke (multiple ringland failures and a connecting rod if you can believe that). On a car with full records and under warranty, completely stock at ~30k miles. Finally they relented and agreed to cover half the cost, very much not bullet proof, and not cheap either.
Yesterday at lunch I was talking to a friend of mine who said he didn't want to own an e46 M3 because he hears of so many engine problems. I had a student with an 06 M3 @ VIR (back in 07) he broke a timing chain and destroyed the valve cover in a car with 8k miles.
If it's mechanical, it can and will break. I'll also say this though, despite all the hoopla on the internet about how 996s are broken all the time, they're actually quite reliable.
Exactly, that's why I'd rather build one, and then I'll know exactly what I'm getting.
The C4 looks nice, but overpriced. Seems like a case of, "well, I just spent 18k to fix it in the last 2 years, so that must be what it's worth".
I live down the street from BH Porsche, I keep meaning to stop in and leave a card with a salesman, surely they've got to get their share of IMS failure cars in, I can't imagine they're all getting fixed.
Savannah, I disagree. Here's a $16k aerokit car w/out issues;
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...#ht_566wt_1167
Got no bids at $16k, it's not the only one. If you're looking, you can find one for that price. I'd say a cleaner one w/80-90k miles may pull $18k, price and condition affect the prices a lot. On a car in need of an engine, you also have to factor in the fact that the car has to be transported and can't be test driven, which should detract from price also.
I've looked at that one...fairly hard actually. If it wasn't on the wrong side of the country I'd be much more interested. It was a no sale at 16k last week, I'm wondering where it's going to end up this time...
Lower price, and I want to build the motor myself. I'll know who did the clutch, IMS, seals, water pump, etc.
I'd rather have it all new and done my way, than worry about someone else's work.
Are you interested in a "core" motor?
I've been looking for a 996 w/a broken motor fairly for some time also, hard to imagine why there isn't more of them out there...
How many high end sports cars toss their motors? Its like finding a Ferrari or amg benz, or 24V VR6, M3 etc. Not many just blow a motor, they get wrecked, then there are many people out there wanting to fix them. You need some luck, like when I found my 330CI that the engine didnt run. (but its not worth what a 996 is by far
Luck has been the missing element so far. I actually missed out on a car that would have been perfect by less than 30 minutes last week. It was even white, my favorite color.
Still looking guys, appreciate any leads or information!
Thanks!
White ones are the most rare!
This one is at my facility now and has suffered from a cracked head or cylinder. It is not going to be repaired.
Its a VERY CLEAN all stock car with 96K on the clock. If interested, call us for details [phone removed] as no price has been determined at this point. We could retain the car and repair it for the new owner if someone chose that and since its already on-site here it saves the shipping :-)
The car has not been advertised for sale yet.
Its a damn nice, clean car!! A local person bought the car broken after we found it for him. The seller did not disclose to him that it was a Tip, so he decided to sell the car and find a broken 6 speed to have us build a 3.6 for. I never asked if it was a Tip, neither did he and the pics didn't illustrate the shifter! Talking about a surprise!
It runs. It should not be driven, because as is the engine could possibly be saved. If the car is driven, the engine could be completely wasted.
It is VERY NICE, super clean and in great shape. It has a clean carfax and I can't find even a scratch on it.
12.5K as it is.
The car is currently at the Flat 6 Innovations facility in Cleveland Ga, about 5 hours from Savannah :-)
I believe he plans on listing it on Ebay very soon.
I'm also still looking, however a 1999 C2 tip w/almost 100k miles for 12.5k is not what I'm looking for, unless it's just a cracked head? (Is it?). White sure is pretty though and the car does appear to be in great shape.
This car is clean.. In fact with 100K on the clock its cleaner than the 04 C4S that I drove home tonight with 32K miles on it. Its every bit as clean as any 50K mile car that we see.
It probably is a cracked head, but the purchaser did not want us to tear into it to see, he did not want to spend any more money on it.Because of that we have to assume cracked head/cylinder.
We do big bore engines to Tip cars more often that you'd think.. The tip trannys are super strong and don't break with any amount of N/A power we could throw at them.
The white cars are my favorite, we seldom see them here, they don't tend to break... Silver breaks the most :-)
Jake, thanks for the heads up....just not interested in a tip car though.
As far as reliability, I would have said silver, but only because every leased 911 in LA is silver, I think it might be a law out here...
Keep looking guys, somethings bound to turn up. I've got a couple of cars that I've got my eye on in the 15k range with average miles too...might end up going that route if I can't come across a broken one...
Hey! He's actually got pictures up now!
That car's been listed on CL several times, I've left messages, emailed, etc.
Huge pet peeve of mine. If you want to sell it, respond to interested parties. If you don't want to sell it, why bother going to the trouble of listing it?
I might give him a another call though, it's basically what I'm looking for.
Thanks for the heads up!
Does his voicemail message still claim that he's "out working hard for you"?
There's a silver one on Ebay in your neck of the woods Ahmet, but it concerns me since the guy's still driving it with the check engine light on....I'm sure he got a nosebleed quote from the dealer and he's trying to unload it quick...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT
Ja, the voicemail greeting still says that, hah. I've tried leaving a message as well, like I said no answer...
I've seen the car on eBay, from the description I doubt it's the IMS bearing, I think a lot of people think the IMS is the problem because of all the chatter on the internet. I'm thinking it maybe a cam actuator? Maybe I'm expecting too much due to the few cars I've passed on in the past, but I'm not willing to spend $10k on a dead 99 996, that's just too much money when perfectly well running cars can be had for $16k or so. There's a member here who sold a solid looking 99 w/100k miles and a few upgrades for under $15,5k.
Exactly, I think a dead car is worth between 6-9k, depending on options, etc.
I'd be wiling to pay more for the right car, but it'd have to be a C4 in white with black leather.
At this point, I'm leaning more towards a 15k 911, there's quite a few of them out there for sale, but I haven't seen very many here in Los Angeles. Lots and lots of cabs, which I'm really not interested in at all.
Sigh...Ebay. Seems like there's a lot of that going on there these days.
Jake, is the seller looking to sell in the neighborhood of 6-8k? If so I'd be interested in taking a closer look. If not, it's most likely a pass for me. I'd be glad to pass on the information to anyone else who's interested.
Any chance you've got anything else that's a little bit closer fit to what I'm looking for?
Thanks!
