Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

40 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

What would you do and why? If you bought a 996 that was over 1500 miles away would you rather a). Fly out and see the car, buy it and drive it back (approx. cost $700) or b). Fly out and see the car and then have Intercity deliver it to you? ($1700) Not sure what i should do. I would love to drive the car back, but that amount of miles and time might be worth $1,000.

POST 2Original post

I'm a newb, but even I can tell you, I would pay $1000 to "drive it back!" Isn't that the point?

POST 3Original post

It's a great way to bond with your Porsche. Drive it home, get familiar with your Porsche and have a blast doing it. Pics of your trip are expected. GL

POST 6Original post

Drive it home. It takes about 1000 miles to start to get comfortable with these cars if you've never owned one before.

POST 7Original post

I did a PPI, Rennlist member took a look, I flew out to Louisville, KY and drove it 800 miles home. Loved every minute!!!!

POST 8Original post

I was a nervous wreck driving my car 7 miles back home as it was SO different from my previous p-car. And then for the following week I drove it like an old lady thinking it was going to spin out on me in the corners. Not until I did an autocross soon thereafter did I get comfortable with it and confident that it wasn't going to spin around on me whenever I tried to push it. But like the others I agree you should drive it home anyway!!!

POST 9Original post

Jdog, I found my 996 all of two miles away from my house in Ankeny and would have killed to drive it 1000 miles the first time. Go for it!

POST 10Original post

Drove to Hershey two weeks ago, these cars are really fun to drive. Drive it home.!!

POST 12Original post

I flew to NC to buy my 928 S4 a couple of years ago. Had a ball driving it home. On the way home I even met another Rennlister who helped me find the car. We sat down for dinner, then I was on my way. I could understand if you had it shipped, but to fly out and then have it shipped makes no sense to me. You've already taken some time to fly out. What's an extra day? Plus there's risk with the transport. The RL'er who met me in NC showed me his car that he had shipped - had a support chain scratch his roof during transit. I'm sure he regretted not hopping on a plane and driving the car home instead.

POST 13Original post

Drive it. I drove mine back from North Carilina. Glad I did.

POST 14Original post

I wish I had drive my 996 home, it will be a great exp. Do a ppi, and drive it!

POST 15Original post

Definitely do the fly & drive. I did that to the tune of 2000+ miles from Portland, OR to Indianapolis and had a great time. Home with my C4S

POST 17Original post

better yet, get an airplane ticket 750 miles and I will drive it half way there for ya

POST 18Original post

Drove my 996 Cab home 1482 miles :-) Drove wife's Lexus home 1650 miles :-) Drove my 996 Turbo Home 430 miles :-( just getting comfortable and I was home

POST 19Original post

Take a week day (towards end of week) fly and drive! I did it once - not on my 996 - (only 400 miles) and loved it!!! You really bond with the car. Do it!!!

I didn't even fly out to see mine. Got a PPI, some pics and had it shipped in. -td

POST 21Original post

If the weather is good, drive it home. If you have the time, spread the trip out over three or four days.

Fly out to New York, do a two-day track event at Watkins Glen, sharing the car with the previous owner. Drive back to Iowa. I'm leaving for NY Friday morning! That's what I'd recommend.^^^^^^^

Couldn't say it better myself.

POST 26Original post

Well it makes sense in a way. He would have to visually approve the car to give the OK on it. Then he fly's back and has the car shipped back. Baller.

POST 27Original post

I guess I'm the only guy in support of shipping. I shipped my car last year with a no name (i.e. lowest bidder type) transport company that my dealer arranged. It was not a good experience. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...delivered.html Having said that, I would ship again, but I would use a reputable company. For me, the long drive was too much time away from family and kids. Paying to transport it was worth it for me. I just used the wrong carrier initially. Intercity is one of the more expensive ones. You could consider looking for a non enclosed carrier if you're hoping to save some money. That's what I ultimately did. Good luck!

POST 28Original post

When I found mine in Virginia, I drove 275 miles to see it, had a PPI. Following weekend drove with a friend, and drove my new to me Porsche back home. Loved every mile....

POST 29Original post

I just flew 700 miles to pick up my new to me 2002 c4s and drove it home. what a great experience. Loved every minute of it and would do it again in a heart beat.

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 8524517

I'd fly out and see the car (don't forget to get a PPI!) and if the car passes muster buy it and drive it back, taking the LONG way home. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 34 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8526562

Yes. I declined buying the car. The PPI came back and it was just too concerning to me what was contained in it. Looking for other options now, but hard to find what I want.

POST 35Original post

Quotes source post: 8546317

What are you looking for?

POST 36 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8546361

Looking for 2000 - 2002 Black on Black or silver on black with low miles relative to the year (ideally under 80k). Also looking to make sure that all necessary service/updates/TSB's have been completed. The unfortunate part is that I have my eye on one,but can't get the seller to answer my emails anymore. It seems he just doesn't have the urgency to sell it like most car salespeople. I told him I have the money and ready to pay cash and he still won't answer me. Sounds kind of odd so I will more than likely walk away from yet another one.

POST 37Original post

No doubt a little patience and you will find your dream car! Don't rush it because you will want to keep it for a very long time!! Pete

POST 39Original post

I did the fly and drive when I bought mine... almost 2,200 miles!

POST 40Original post

When t bought mine it was in Florida (me CT). I did a remote PPI which came back O.K. Now it was time to close the transaction and the pickup. I was busy with family and work so I offered a good friend of mine (and fellow car nut) $500 to fly down and drive it back. He (in his early 20's) eagerly jumped at the chance. He and his buddy flew down, did the final inspection/transaction and drove it back. They had some free time and took the opportunity to stop at friends places along the way. A few days later they arrived, car it great shape, no problems. They had a great time and it worked out as a win-win...it would have cost me more than double to ship it back.
