Leading evidence: 'slowest day of my life' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'slowest day of my life' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Fixed it, told me what it was, but I did not care enough to pay attention to what they found and fixed.
Hi,
something really weird happened today when i started my car. the engine was cold and when i started the car .. it started with a low voice low rpm like 500 rpm ! and i noticed that when this happen the car brings out a huge white smoke... this time it did not i got so scared when i stepped on the gas pedal the rpm raised a bit then i left the pedal the car shutted down ! when i started the car again .. same thing but when i stepped on the gas pedal it went fine .. although the car sounds different more throatier !
i cant figure out whats wrong.. oil level is fine and i did not drive the car hard yesterday it was the slowest day of my life !! (because i was with a relative who fears speed) maybe filter ? fuel filter ? or fuel pump ? but its ok it performs well i tried it the day before it was OK
i just want to know if someone faced similar problem .. i dont want to hear that my car needs engine replacement because its out of warranty although its a 2002 its something between me and the dealer.
any comment will be helpful, thanks
Hard to tell but it sounds like the Mass Air Flow sensor. Mine had similar cold start problems until the MAF was replaced. My car started out acting like yours but eventually would not let me back it out of the garage without stalling until it got good and warm. If you can scan it, the error code should tell the story.
Wouldn't lots of white smoke usually suggest that water/ coolant is going through the motor? I can't think of too many inexpensive reasons for that to happen so I sure hope I'm wrong.
Colin
Mine ('02 C4 cab) did that. Lots of smoke at startup that disappeared in 2 minutes. I ignored it and didn't happen again until 3 weeks.
After that second time it has never happened.
Weird, scary, smelly but temporary?

I think Cydog is right
but to feel more ok i am taking the car to dealer to check it.
C4C_Leaon -- this used to happen just take out some oil of the engine and things will go fine it happens after hard driving or long highway then you stop the car and on cold start it smokes .. i dont know why but many 2002 have this problem maybe the oil level reader is not right i always keep the level in the middle last time it was only three dots.
Mass air flow sensor I think is the part. It send incorrect temperature reading to the motor or something. Anway, mine 02 C2 did the same thing. Fixed it, told me what it was, but I did not care enough to pay attention to what they found and fixed. Easy issue to resolve though.
