I forget which year they changed but my 2000 Boxster is Black Metallic (Z8) and I'm pretty sure it was the same for 2001.

Found two or three that seemed well cared for and had lowish mileage, but having been burned once before (the '82 SC needed to have all valve guides replaced) I was very hesitant to put the PPI in the hands of someone I didn't know.

I fixed it by not letting my wife ride in the car any more.
Just picked this sweet gal up about a week and a half ago and loving every minute of it.
* Metallic Black (I thought it was "Basalt" Metallic Black, but now I'm not sure if Basalt is part of the color name)
* Graphite gray interior with matching gray gauge faces (never seen this before, only black or white)
* 53K miles
* Tiptronic trans
* 2005 997 19" rims
* No PSM
Even though this is my second 911 (had an '82 911SC about 12 years ago), this was a bit of an impulse buy, which is out of character for me.
I had put my passion for sports cars to the side for the past 5 years. I've been driving a 1990 Honda CRX (yes, really) so my wife could have a nice car for once, and I so I could drop way too much money on my other obsession-- high-end audio / home theater. I told myself, I don't "need" a nice car, just something to get me to and from work. This was true for a while.
Long story short, I was getting fed up with the high-end audio hobby, and right around this time I see a black / camel 1990 911 in the grocery store parking lot. Something clicked. It reminded me of the SC I used to own and the next thing I know, I'm scouring the internet to see what's available. Didn't find what I wanted locally (had my heart set on a black on black 6 speed), so I start considering out of state cars. Found two or three that seemed well cared for and had lowish mileage, but having been burned once before (the '82 SC needed to have all valve guides replaced) I was very hesitant to put the PPI in the hands of someone I didn't know.
I keep looking for a local 911 and find a black on black '99 locally at an exotic used car lot with 82K miles. Lets just say that it was not the pampered weekend-driver that I was after. The clutch was about to go, the interior was very worn, and it wreaked like cigarette smoke. You could tell that this was a "player's" ride, complete with the pimped out after market rims and carbon fiber interior inlays. But this was the only black Porsche I could find in my area that was within the price range I was looking for (under $25K). As I'm leaving the lot, the sales guy asks me if I'm interested in the "other black 911" we have on the showroom floor.
They tell me that the car has been on the lot for too long and they are blowing it out to keep inventory fresh. If they don't sell it soon, it will go to auction. Whether that is true or not, the car seems like a good candidate. I was not thrilled about the interior color or the automatic transmission, but sometimes, you need to put your preconceived notions to the side at take fresh perspective on what is before you. And the truth is, the monochromatic color scheme of the all gray interior is actually very attractive and ... unusual (at least to me). I warmed up to to that cool gray interior much more easily than I thought I would. OK, so what about the automatic tranny? Real men don't drive automatics.
But I keep an open mind, and I'm trying to think practically. The Tiptronic does let you manually change gears for spirited driving, and I do plan to drive the car often, so traffic would be less of an annoyance.... anyway, all this crap is whirling around in my head while they are pushing the car out of the showroom. I take it for a spin, and I'm sold. The tip is actually a lot of fun. A good compromise for what is going to be pretty much my daily driver.
So I have the car inspected by Chris's German in Bellevue WA, and they say the car looks clean.... and the compression test is near perfect.
... my dream car on a budget.
Cheers,
- Tim
Tim, Nice looking ride and those 997 lobster fork wheels looks surprising good on it! Great job tracking the history down. Hope to see you on the road!
Hey, congrats... and thanx for the pic/story.
re: Gray gauges, I know mine has the factory "Aluminium" gauges, might be what you have do look silver/gray ish???
Option code "X71 Aluminum Instrument Dials" It'll be on the sticker under the front hood (if factory installed)
Enjoy the new ride
If the flake color is gold then it's Black Metallic. If the flake color is silver/blue then it's Basalt. I forget which year they changed but my 2000 Boxster is Black Metallic (Z8) and I'm pretty sure it was the same for 2001.
Basically, Black Metallic is a "warm" black while Basalt Black is a "cool" black.
Just curios... if it's not Basalt Black will you be changing your user ID?
Very nice. I also like the lobster forks on it. I have a black 996 as well and I might consider these as summer "cruiser" wheels. Thanks for posting pics.
I have seen this car and man is it clean!!
WTG Tim!
RE the IMS no, it has not been replaced (at least upgraded) as there was no upgrade available when the work was done.
RE Basalt, I am pretty sure it is Bassalt (silver) not the gold. Paint and body is is super condition - is there an options sticker under the hood?
RE lobster claws, I agree, they look pretty good and I am one of the first to say I dont like 19' on 996's so
RE your car is all wet, what.... do you live in fricken Seattle Er sumtin!
See ya soon!
Yeah, I'm not usually one that likes newer model wheels on older 911's, but these work.
They aren't aluminum and I don't see X71 under the hood, but I do see X45. Just googled that code and it looks like X45 is "gauges painted interior color", so it would seem that this is a factory option. I like it. It gives the interior a modern monochromatic appearance.
Thanks much. I felt like a PI tracking down the history on the car.
Where is the color code on the car? I don't see it under the hood, but I don't know what I'm looking for. I may just have to change my user name if it is in fact not Basalt.
What wheel type is on your car now?
I spoke to Robert at Auto Strasse this morning to see if I could glean any more details on the IMS bearing. He was adamant that the "whole IMS bearing thing" is not a problem if you keep the car maintained and the engine clean. He called it an "urban legend" LOL. He assured me that if the bearing looked like it needed to be replaced they would have done it and reiterated that I shouldn't worry... just do oil changes every 5K and maintain the car. Thoughts?
Oh I plan to. The only thing that might keep me from driving it all the time is the gas consumption. Is 14MPG normal? I literally go through almost a half tank of gas with a day of driving.
The guy at the Newport CA dealer was surprisingly accommodating, but it was the prior owner's willingness to let me call him that I was really thankful for.
As you can tell by the exterior pics, it's been hard to get a dry moment to snap some interior pics.
Here ya go!
Cheers all!
- Tim
Man that is spotness
So I spoke with those in the know. We all agreed that if you just drive it, have the oil changed at the intervals suggested and have Chris analize your filter you will be fine - Historically the Tips have more issues of being driven at lower rpm's so its good to get it out and "spin up" the motor every chance you can (after its warmed by driving... not idle)
As for the 14MPG - that is horrible, with some help we can get you into the single digits!!!
(actually that is a tad low for a daily driver, see what others say, I think 17-20 is about right for town use, but depending on how long it idles and how slow traffic is... sure maybe its about right.)
Me?
hahaha - its take $70 to fill the little red car and it lasts a while, then I put in more
RE the computer.... I leave that home but take the blackberry with
My 99' C2 took less $$ to fill and lasted a while too - sorry man, I really never checked either Porsche
LOL - I came from a 94' Suburban that took $160 to fill ONE TANK, this is easy
(note 94 Suburban's have a stock 42 gal tank and when gas hit $4+ the truck was worth twice as much full as empty!)
Buy the best gas you can - in Bellevue the Premium pumps get used more so I use them and stay clear of pumps out of the area (Auburn - Tacoma... ect where no ones buys premium) I think my 86 gets in the high teens for a commute car - something in the range of 330 miles/tank about 19 gal
What are your P cars? More than one?
My '82 911SC didn't go through gas like this 996.
I'll probably run the MPG by Chris's just to see what he thinks. I mean I know that a 300HP car aint gonna be fuel efficient, but ....
I fill up with highest octane at the Chevron near Microsoft where everyone drives Aston Martins, so I should be OK. :P
Cool. So why did you go old skool?
I was this >< close to buying a 1990, but a car that age is considered a "classic" and harder to finance and insure. I also thought it might be prone to needing more maintenance?
evolutionary process of being an owner I guess.
When I bought the 996 I planned to keep it a year, sell and get an older car for a year, sell and get a newer car...
that now has changed to "hmmmmm maybe I'll keep this and if the chance comes along to get an even older one, jump on that" - I drove a couple 997's including a PDK C4 Sport Chrono PLUS and decided I might never be old enouogh to drive one of those
Hi Ultraman -
You're local too eh?
Yeah Bradley's detail is a great place. I'm good friends with one of the guys over at RNR Autobody, and he referred me to Bradley. Good crew over there. They do a through job and you don't have to worry about them burning through your paint.
It's $145 for a three step exterior, and $100 for just polish and wax. So they aren't cheap, but you get peace of mind with them that adds value IMO.
- Tim
Thanks it is a clean car for sure.
If I drive like an old woman I get the sorts of MPGs you report, but I'm averaging 13-14 MPG with "spirited" driving. What is your driving style when getting 18-19 MPG? Any heavy acceleration in there?
I just finished taking my entire console apart to find the source of a bad rattle... couldnt find anything...then i looked under the pass seat when vacuuming.. bingo..my missing calculator!
there is no carpet under them and anything that falls down there rattles like hell. They also get a notorious sunroof rattle that you can search for a fix on.
Chris's is more of your drivetrain go to shop.
trouble with rattle is they are like electric issues.... lots of labor to find the problem, cheap to fix.
Maybe just let me drive it around a while and I'll tell you what I think it is
LOL at Jon, I told ya about the set of keys I found in the body panels under the seat of my 996 - drove me nuts!!
some common rattles - (interior.... there are others like suspension and motor)
come on guys make a list:
Passenger Airbag
Speaker Grills
more..............
have you looked and felt around under your seats? because if your having a hard time narrowing down the area, its a good place to start... under the seat rattles project themselves all over..
that rear panal behind the seats if faom.. no screws or snap/locks
you litterally just take it out, there is nothing holding it there but the fact that the foam is bigger than the place it go into
the piece I am refering to lays flat... (been a while since I have had a 996 and dont have a pic of it) it covers the top of the shocks (which could be the source of a rattle)
not sure what the rear window rattle is
I just read about rear deck rattle in 2003 996 and there are stated to be 5 clips holding it in place. You sure it is just wedged in there in the 2001?
Yep. Local as well.
That's not bad of a price. What's a three step detail? My car is in dire need of a detail... exterior and interior actually. I will definitely consider them after I finish getting body parts painted and installed.
1. Clay bar over entire surface to remove surface impurities
2. Polish
3. Wax
Oh, and they tape off all trim so they don't mar it during the polishing. This is a good thing, as less detailed detailers will either scuff / burn the rubber trim or push the rubbing compound into the crevices.
I'll probably do the clear side markers and possibly a silver Porsche crest on the hood at some point, but for now I want to get the interior chip-free and squeak / rattle free.
Speaking of rattles, apparently there are a ton of potential sources for me to tinker with. I just went to Renntech and downloaded 14! tech service bulletins issued by Porsche for addressing various "noise" sources. Seems the common fix is adhesive felt or foam tape. Should be interesting to see if I can get my cabin completely quiet.
For anyone else reading this in the Seattle area looking for a rattle expert, apparently these guys can help:
www.eurotechbodywerkes.com
I can't vouch for them, but it is a lead anyway.
Personally, I like to fix stuff, so I think I'll use the TSB docs I've downloaded from RennTech.org to try to tackle as many as I can first. Wish me luck.
I know that a sports car is not a Honda when it comes to fuel efficiency, but I'm surprised how quickly the needle drops on the gas gauge in my "new to me" P-car.
Since my last fill-up, my trip odometer reads 92 miles, and the gas level is right at the 1/2 way mark. The gas tank holds 16.9 gallons. If the gauge were accurate, I would have gone through roughly 8.5 gallons and my actual gas milage would be just about 11 MPG!
However, my gas gauge does not appear to be correct. I just topped off again this morning for a total of 6.6 gallons. 92 miles / 6.6 gallons = 13.9 MPG (even though the OBC says 15.1 MPG). 13.9 MPG seems pretty crappy considering this is the efficiency I get with me just throwing the car into drive and letting the tip tranny do all the shifting, with very little hard acceleration. If I were hammering the throttle all the time, I could understand getting 14 MPG.
I casually mentioned my concern to my mechanic and he felt that the OBC would catch any problems with the fuel delivery to the motor and throw up a CEL if the air / fuel mixture were off. That makes sense, but it seems that most people here are reporting 16-18 MPG in town, and 25-27 MPG highway. I'm getting between 12-14 town and 17-18 highway.
Any thoughts on the cause? Anything I can ask my mechanic to look for?
Unless you are tracking(and you aren't) those mpg figures are pretty low. My car seems to average 21 mpg for highway or around town. Not sure I can give you any ideas, but hopefully someone can help you with an explanation.
Thanks!
I've been out of the loop on Porsche accessories, so the first time I saw these wheels was on this car, but I think they do make it look like a more current model. I've got no complaints.
Ed,
Is there anywhere local to purchase the needed bulbs for the Amberectomy?
How tough are the front light assemblies to remove to change the bulbs? Did you change the rear lights as well?
Thank you,
John
Hmmm .....
According to
www.fueleconomy.gov
apparently I'm not too far off from the expected MPG, and I'm right on target with the "user reported MPG", but I don't get how you any many others are getting 18+.
I haven't calculated my MPG, but another thing I noticed is that everytime I fill up, the gas gauge never seems to hit full. I don't drive my car much in the winter but I will pay closer attention next time I fill up.
I bought mine at xenonmods
http://www.xenonmods.com/silverbulbs1157info.htm
email and ask him which ones you need, he was easy to work with though some people have said they had problems. These are becoming more available and places like Amazon have them. Not sure where to get them locally.
pulling the headlights takes 30 seconds and removing the bulb is about the same amount of time. BUT if you want the inner lens removed that takes about 1/2 hour and some tinkering around with a hot soldering iron and a pair of needle nosed pliers
post #29 and 32 show how to remove the inner lens of the headlights.
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...berectomy.html
I have done 8 of these operations, its not hard, but you have to be careful not to melt the parts you want to keep (like the bulb mounting surface)
hope this helps - the results are awesome!
When I first bought my car I had a really annoying squeak coming from the passenger side. When I lowered it the noise only got worse. I fixed it by not letting my wife ride in the car any more.
BTW - you northwesterners
I just got word thet there are openings for the Jan 8th "Winter Skills Day"
This is an awesome event and you will have a blast !!
Let me know if you need help finding the registration page or are interested in volunteering
see you there
PS - Lunch for Volunteers and/or Participants is on me
Ed,
I plan on attending the "skills day" and give my new toy a workout. The 996 will have different handling characteristics than the Subie STI I last drove at Bremerton.
I would like to talk to you about supervising an amberectomy on my Targa...
cool, anytime...
might be a cold one out there but there is a nice long lunch break and always time late in the day. I would be more than happy to offer a hand on the headlights. When you get time order the bulbs so you only have to pull everything once. (I took a couple months to get it all together)
Since it's a Tiptronic I'm going to assume that you're a pretty easy going driver. If you're not, make sure you add regular checks of your suspension fasteners. The 996 was never made to handle the added stress of the 19 inch wheel. (Porsche attempted to save money on the 997 by reusing and not redesigning the 996 suspension but found out that they were tearing them up from the added stress--they had to be reengineered).
Thanks, I plan to have the suspension checked periodically based on a comment you made in the thread on RUF 19" rims. Why are larger rims harder on the suspension?
I'm not a super agressive driver, but I wouldn't say I'm easy going either. I chose the tip because I plan to use this as a daily driver, a good deal of which can be spent in traffic. This is my first automatic transmission, but the manual mode seems like a good compromise between convenience and performance.
OH and sorry Tim to go OT on your thread but
if any of you hitting the track on the 8th need a helmet I have 2 size mediums available, they are holding over the Snell 2000 rating till spring because the club "rentals" are all 2000 and have not been replaced yet...after that it will be 2005/2010 only - I have my new one already
Having pulled a real noob move, I picked a user name (Basalt 911) to reflect what I *thought* was the color of my recently acquired 996, only to find out that "Basalt" black was not available in 2001, only the less colorfully named "Metallic Black".
So ..... if you are wondering why user "MetBlk 911" has the same avatar as "Basalt 911", we are one-and-the-same.
User "Basalt 911" is no longer.
May he rest in peace.
Ahhh, ummm, just realized that my paint is actually "Black Magic Pearl Metallic"... looks like I'm going to have to try this again...
I'm thinking may new name should be "BlkMagPrlDmbSht 911"
joking...
My wife Paula and I made a trip out to Fife, WA to pick up her custom-optioned 328i Coupe. You should have seen her bouncing around when they drove it up.
* Alpine (Alpinweiss) white exterior with shadowline trim
* Red Leather interior (too bold for me, but it certainly gets a fair amount of attention, not that my wife needs any more of that....
)
* Anthracite bamboo trim
* M Series Sport Package
It doesn't have a ton of horses (230) but certainly enough to have fun around town. My favorite part about the car though is the short shifter. It is practically a nub. I love the feel of shifting with it. The linkage is so tight and precise that it really makes it easy find the gates for each gear.
I know this isn't the best place to share this sort of news, but I figure there are at least a few car nuts here that can appreciate more than just P-cars.
Even though I only just joined this great community back in Dec '09, I've decided that now is not the right time for me to be a P-car owner. It's a shame, as this one is a real gem.
I took advantage of the 12 minutes that it wasn't raining today to snap some shots for the ad that will show up in Auto Trader in the next couple of days.
If you know anyone in the Seattle area that is looking for a super clean 2001 Tiptronic with 55K on the car and under 12K miles on a total engine overhaul, send 'em my way.
New rear main seal, air / oil separator, water pump, coolant reservoir, timing chain and belt tensioners, bearings, all gaskets and more. The engine is like new. Recent inspection by Chris's German Auto shows perfect compression on all cylinders and absolutely no leaks or other problems of any kind. Major service also completed at 46K miles.
Cheers!
Nothing at the moment, but the three-year plan is to pay down some debt and get an even nicer one in the future. Maybe its a Tim thing, but I'll be driving my Honda until I get our finances back in shape.
Thanks for the endorsement Ed. It's even cleaner now than when you saw it at Chris's as I've done a number of things to bring the exterior and interior up to a like-new condition.
Love the gray gauges....never saw those before.
Like you, I also was a previous 82 SC owner - and now own a 2000 metallic black 996 tip. (Wish I had your updated wheels, though....very nice.)
If you do a decoder check with your VIN number you'll be able to find the correct color, btw.
Nice ride!
For sure. This is just a temporary set-back or regrouping to prepare for the purchase of an even better 911 in my future.
There sure is a great group of guys here, so I plan to come back.
There's always something better. As 996's go though, mine is tough to beat in the way of condition, both mechanically and aesthetically. Is that better?
