Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have run patched tires until they needed replacement on my bike tires, trailer tires and car tires.

However, as long as you are vigilant about checking the air pressure and if you notice that it is losing air at a rate GREATER than the other tires get it looked at or replaced.
Leading evidence: 'Run patched tires until they needed replacement' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check air pressure and if you notice' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Also, had this not been in the center of the tread I'd probably have opted to replace the tire.

Im on the camp of replacing the tire, just for peace of mind.

Depending on tread depth you might need to replace both tires on that axle.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

The only additional issue may have been that based on the wear I may have had to replace both tires due to size differentials and that really would have upped the ante.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was out doing some errands on Friday night and after leaving Sports Authority I heard a small thump followed by the tic-tic-tic of something in a tire. I could tell from the sound that it was something fairly large and when I got home I saw the head of what looked like a large nail in the middle of the tread of the left rear tire. I did move it a bit to see if it had gone all the way through and as soon as I heard air I pushed it back in and rotated it so it was on the bottom so the weight would help hold it in.
Based on the size I was pretty sure I was going to be out $450+ for a new tire. After a brief search for a tire shop I chose a place based on the Tire Rack web site. As it turns out it was about at the limit for a repair and an hour later I had a new stem patch for $30. Based on the size, shape and a bit of remaining plastic it looks like it's was an old tent spike.
I had a nail in my tire... my local guy advised that for high performance tires and spirited driving, a patch is not recommended. Lots of diff opinion on this.... Im on the camp of replacing the tire, just for peace of mind.
My understanding is that a stem patch reduces the tire rating by 1 rating level. Since I don't track the car (or at least haven't yet) and I only rarely drive into triple digits, I'm comfortable with the fix for my daily driver. I know a few track junkies that have no concerns over running a properly patched tire so I'm good with it until the tire needs replacing.
Also, had this not been in the center of the tread I'd probably have opted to replace the tire. The only additional issue may have been that based on the wear I may have had to replace both tires due to size differentials and that really would have upped the ante.
Personally I wouldn't drive a tire with a patch. However, as long as you are vigilant about checking the air pressure and if you notice that it is losing air at a rate GREATER than the other tires get it looked at or replaced. Depending on tread depth you might need to replace both tires on that axle.
I have been dodging tire replacement bullets this past year. I pulled 2 nails out of the car and they never punctured through. Tire was taken off the rim to make sure from the inside that it only was in the treads. Having meat on the tires really helps too.
It is defiantly a matter of opinion.
I have no problem running a tire with an internal patch. Especially if it is a nail hole. I have run patched tires until they needed replacement on my bike tires, trailer tires and car tires. I would not run for extended distances with a plug.
I've got one in GA that's about a 20 minute drive from where I work. I've also got one in Indy that's about the same distance. They're a great deal when they go on sale for $9.99 w/coupon!
