The car is very clean on the interior and exterior, but I must say I am unfamiliar with the engine on this vehicle.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.
1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

the 5 chain vs 3 chain makes no difference as far as IMS failure is concerned.
Hey guys, newbie here, but will surely become a regular soon...
I have an opportunity to purchase a 2001 C2 Coupe at a wholesale price (I work in the car business). It has 30,000 miles on it with a manual trans. Full leather interior and Aero Kit. Car seems to have been very well cared for, although I have incomplete service records on the vehicle.
The car is very clean on the interior and exterior, but I must say I am unfamiliar with the engine on this vehicle. Reading about the IMS issue is scaring the crap out of me right now though! From what I read, it seems the 98-00 are the most problematic with this issue, am I correct in that?
Also, I am going to have the local Porsche dealer to a Pre Purchase Inspection for me. Will they be able to tell me if the IMS is going to be an immediate risk?
Anybody who can help shed some light or offer me a bit of insight, I would appreciate your help!
hi K, welcome to rennlist.
there are two schools of thought on the IMS, i'm going to make is short...ish
if it concerns you, get it fixed, build the cost of the repair right into the cost of the car OR
you think the IMS is BS and you go about your merry way.
i went to the UK forum site to see what they had to say about the IMS, after 8 pages of threads, nothing, i found that rather interesting. however... my car is on it's way to Flat6 this weekend.... let me explain.... when i bought, like you i knew of the IMS issue and figured i'd deal with it when the clutch needs replacing, it just made sense to do it at that time, well that time has come. i would encourage anyone to have the upgrade upon clutch replacement, however, not sure what to suggest for an automatic.
take it to a dealer ten times and get ten different answers, i believe there is nothing, except the death rattle and checking your oil filter for metal. some say oil leaks @RMS
good luck, Chris
cool, you're gonna love it!!
with the low miles you might find a warranty company willing to cover it...I would get than and drive the wheels off the car !! The last owner was nice enough to save it for you, you dont have to save it for the next guy....treat it well, take care of it, and put some miles on it!
All M96 engine suffers from a potential IMS failure. That ranges from '99 to '05 in US models. There are names of shops here around the country that performs this procedure. It costs anywhere from $2500 to $3,000 including clutch.
I am doing mine when replacing the clutch during a complete engine out later this year if I keep my car. Its has 97K miles on it.
OIC this is another IMS thread with scared owner....
dont be afraid, be proactive. The 98-00 models have not had any higher ratio of problems than the later years from what I see...as Chao said, there is a fix, just do the fix because what we have seen is the lower milage cars have more issues...30k is a sweet spot for them to be a real issue. I would just swap it out right away.
where are you located, there are good indy shops that can help you out... my shop offers the full Jake Raby treatment along with their own flavor of management and fear calming steps. I will let you know that most dealers dont give a hoot about a 10 year old car... nuff said about that
lastly there is currently no real method of determining the condition of said bearing... the "signs" are pretty subtle but include oil analysis and leak detection. Jake is currently working to offer a solution the the diagnostic short comings and it should be available in the next couple months.... till then its a crap shoot.....live with it, fix it, or ignore it - the choice is yours
I think it is a myth that the earlier cars are more prone to IMS failure..... the 5 chain vs 3 chain makes no difference as far as IMS failure is concerned. The IMS fails because it is there, along with the rest of the other engine parts.
