This is not a probability of success.

I'd have to replace all my speakers going with a big amp anyway.

I am going to use the stock amp to run my bass and the amp in the JVC to run my mids and highs.

I was going to put an amp in at first then before doing so I tested the volume range of the pioneer I put in.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm looking for some insight for sound system enhancements for my son's 99 996. The stock system is rather poor and he does enjoy the FabSpeed exhaust but would like a better radio and perhaps I-Pod capability.
Thanks.
Forget enhancements and start over. There is nothing factory worth keeping. I have the Alpine deck (ipod) and Alpine Amp uniquely mounted in the well under the passenger seat and the appropriate speakers with new baffles (Boston Acoustic).
i believe that the stock sound system uses fiber optics, and if you do not use the stock components, then everything has to be replaced.. and new real wire run, speakers replaced.
I am in the process of doing mine too.
So far I choose a JVC 815. Got the adapters so I didnt have to hack the harness. Blue tooth handfree speakerphone and bluetooth connect for music to your choice of device. USB on the back and one on the front. Sounds good.... Bang for the buck you cant beat it. Its part of their "arsonal line" whatever that means but the sales person kept saying like i was to be impressed. So I acted impressed.. I suggest you do the same. Ya know to keep the young kids thinking a name still means something.

Now with this you lose the CD changer, but you can use the stock amp. Next is going to be speakers. I have not researched this yet. But I plan on doing some Bi-amping that is built into the JVC unit. I am going to use the stock amp to run my bass and the amp in the JVC to run my mids and highs.
I am going to try to update the speakers in the door to something with a very good DB rate and make them the subs. If this doesnt satisfy me when the top is open and I need volume, I am going to put in a duel speaker 6" bazooka tube behind the rear seats. It is wasted space anyway.
I thought about a speaker box in the back. But I dont like the look and I really dont want the add'l weight.
Doing it my way adds very little weight and equiptment.
I am having issue finding speakers that will go in the stock grills and I refuse to hack it. So I am going to have to make some custom mounts to get the speakers to mount on the grills without ruining the integrity of putting it back to stock.
PS-- I found just changing the head unit gave me much better sound out of the stock speakers and amp. For those that don't want to do a complete tear out upgrade.

This was the deck I went with and have been really happy. Bluetooth and Ipod work great, and I've been happy so far with the stock amp. Speakers will be my next upgrade though, they are starting to sound tried.
The other nice thing about this deck is it has custom colors and one matches the orange of the rest of the dash, so ti feel a bit more integrated.

4" speakers from the factory but some larger ones have been tucked in the hole.
I was going to put an amp in at first then before doing so I tested the volume range of the pioneer I put in. A little before full volume it was loud enough so I didn't add the misery and strains on the battery and alternator an amp would give. I'd have to replace all my speakers going with a big amp anyway.
I didnt measure yet. But I have had them out. The are a tweeter and midrange. The tweeter is about 1" and the mid is about 3-4" I think the doors are 6"
The previous owner upgraded my sound system with a Pioneer Nav/ipod/bluetooth unit, amp, subwoofer and speakers, etc. The Nav and bluetooth functions are awesome, it also has a video feature if you download on your ipod (and other input options), and the system sounds great with the upgraded amps and speakers, but honestly, I usually have the radio down so I can hear the car! That's the best music
anybody has found a detailed article with the exact size of each component, ect ect ?
I am surprised that there are no good DIY on this topic.
At least the speaker size and have decent pictures of the speaker mounts.
