Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My Indy says that there's likely a problem with the way in which the bearing is fitting into the diff housing so replacing the bearing again won't help.
Leading evidence: 'Replace i don't know' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'problem' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace bearing again won't help' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

At 50k kilometers, I replaced the right carrier bearing (the bearing for the flange for the half-shaft).

A gold meister tech at one of the dealers told me that the couple that he's seen fail were related to improperly sized wheels and/or tires being used on the car.

My Indy says that there's likely a problem with the way in which the bearing is fitting into the diff housing so replacing the bearing again won't help.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Got some of the maintenance paperwork with the car, mechanic that fixed the diff report: "Replace front left diff seal.
Hi all,
I have a 2003 C4S and my front differential is toast. If anyone knows of where I might be able to find one at a reasonable price, please let me know.
Thanks,
Ron
p.s I've cross-posted on the Turbo forum as well.
Try Oklahoma Foreign, DC Auto, either will probably have one. If not you could also try German Auto Dismantlers and LA Porsche Dismantler. You are better off with the first two, more reliable. There are a few other breakers that might have one.
I don't know, but my front passenger was replaced at around 90,000 Km,
cost was slightly under $5000 CDN, core exchange.
Porsche would not sell me the pinion and gear separately, like everybody else.
It is a 2002, C4S, and it has never been tracked.

Failure of the front dif is actually not very common and certainly not a weak part of the AWD 996's. A gold meister tech at one of the dealers told me that the couple that he's seen fail were related to improperly sized wheels and/or tires being used on the car. Remember, anything over an 18" wheel was never recommended on the 996.
It's a grinding noise that you can also feel in the steering wheel. At 50k kilometers, I replaced the right carrier bearing (the bearing for the flange for the half-shaft). At 80k, I replaced the left side. I'm at 110k now and it looks like the left side is gone AGAIN....it's leaking as well. My Indy says that there's likely a problem with the way in which the bearing is fitting into the diff housing so replacing the bearing again won't help. He was actually quite surpised because he hasn't seen a lot of AWD probelms on the C4 or the turbos.
Do you have a C4? I see you're in Ottawa....we should get together to compare noises!
No I don't have a problem with my diff, I was just wondering what the symptoms were.... Just for general knowledge I guess...
I have a 03 C4S. I just recently put it away for the winter.
Now that you mentioned the Ottawa thing, I remember seeing your car around!
Also, I could recommend you to 2 good indy's here in Ottawa if you ever need...
I just purchased an '03 C4S that had lost the oil in the front diff. The car makes a SHHHHH noise during coasting or steady speed - cannot tell from where. Touch the brakes - noise stops. Accelerate - noise stops. Car has 19" 997 Turbo wheels installed - could that be a problem? Got some of the maintenance paperwork with the car, mechanic that fixed the diff report: "Replace front left diff seal. Diagnose side carrier bearing bad/recommend to remove front diff and inspect and replace side carrier bearings soon". That was 2 1/2 years and 12,000 miles ago.
Any feedback/comments appreciated.
