Others have used the new "911" head case (empty key head case), to update the standard two button key to look like the “911” head, by installing the circuit board and "pill" from the standard two button head in to the new, improved "911" case.

this is on the circuit board only; new circuit board will also fix this issue, but needs to be programmed by the dealer; "pill" from old key can be re-used with new circuit board without need to reprogram the pill.

I'm looking on ebay because it's likely a lot cheaper than at Porsche, but even they don't seem to know which keys work with which models.

Check sunset parts for the keyhead but you will still nead a dealer to program it.

If the standard key head guts (post #15) can be changed into the fancy 911 covers, looks like you have to turn the board 180 degres or the blade exits 180 degrees opposite.

He tried a couple things, changing some settings but nothing worked, he could not even get into the menu for it because the car didn't recognize it I guess.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I took the pill out of my old key , that worked (plastic was very worn) and put it in the new.
Does anyone know if the only kind that will work with my car (2003 C2) will be one that looks like mine? ie. the black 2 button one
I'm looking on ebay because it's likely a lot cheaper than at Porsche, but even they don't seem to know which keys work with which models.
I'm planning to buy two of them, so I'm trying to get the best deal - if anyone knows of any other options I might have?
Thanks!!
Kristy
Do a search, plenty of info, The key MUST have the code attached to program it, this is usually on a white tag on the key and seldom found on ebay.
Check sunset parts for the keyhead but you will still nead a dealer to program it.
The programming part is not an issue, and I have found new in package ones on ebay with the code. I just want to make sure that the black 2 button remote is the only one that I can get.. or if any of the other keys also work. Thanks!
You can get the 911 design key head - I have them and I like it much better. I bought mine from Suncoast Porsche. You can also buy replacement "halves" for standard keyheads with worn buttons - this is much cheaper.
Yeah, it's actually the alarm guts that I need, the circuit board, etc. I had my porsche mechanic friend come over with his computer scan thing to see why it wasn't working, but he said that it didn't recognize that there was an alarm at all, just the transponder/immobilizer thing was working. Which didn't make sense to me because I can still arm/disarm the car with the key in the door, but whatever. He tried a couple things, changing some settings but nothing worked, he could not even get into the menu for it because the car didn't recognize it I guess. So, I need a new alarm remote head. I'm going to get two so I can have a spare, as I have the 2nd key (blade) but the remote part was empty.
I like the 911 design one posted, but it is just the shell that you buy, right?
I also have the new 911 design key head pictured above from Suncoast and and love it.
It comes with the guts (Circuit card and all) - everything but the metal shaft of the key.
The programing part is the "pill" in it.
I took the pill out of my old key , that worked (plastic was very worn) and put it in the new.
Works great and it is a two button.
If your key is not working now it may be that the "pill" needs to be programmed or your battery is dying.
I think it costs around $100 - $150 at the dealer to program a key.
There are two "programs". One is the "pill" The other is the transmitter circuit board in the head. If your remote lock/unlock does not work the circuit board transmitter is not working or has lost touch with the car. The pill is basically passive and the car is programmed to recognize it. This will let you manually lock/unlock/start the car with the key.
I bought the *standard 2003 two button head from Sunset for ~$90 and put the key blade in myself. The head needs to be programmed by the dealer. In PM's NJ that cost me ~$125

As Brian mentioned, it does come with the "pill", not the circuit board, you just need to put your key blade into it and then have the new pill programmed to your car.
I just switched the internal circuit board from my old keys into the new key heads.
I'm pretty sure the "pill" is fine, the key works manually in the door lock to lock/unlock and in the ignition. It's the signal from the alarm that is not being recognized by the car, so that is why I'm assuming I need a new circuit board. My mechanic said that he'd have to program it with the codes, maybe he assumed that the new key comes with a new pill? I don't know.... Either way, I just need it fixed because it's so annoying that I have 10 seconds to get the key into the ignition after unlocking the door, or else the alarm goes off! OR if you accidentally turn the key in the door lock the wrong way first, then the right way.. ALARM.
I can't wait until mine comes. The main advantage with the original is that since it looks so ****ty, no one expects it to be a Porsche key! No worries about key theft with that one.
Chris, is the key sitting on engine mounts?
So... Is this how the components function?
Circuit Board:
used only to arm/disarm the alarm; if replaced, it needs to be coded to the receiver in the car by the dealer.
Pill:
Car ignition senses the pill in the key and will not start without the correct code buried in the pill. Also needs to be programmed by the dealer if replaced.
Alarm button intermittent (might need to be re-soldered according to other threads):
this is on the circuit board only; new circuit board will also fix this issue, but needs to be programmed by the dealer; "pill" from old key can be re-used with new circuit board without need to reprogram the pill.
Yes? No?
Yes but if you have to get the new Key head programmed anyway why put the old pill in the new key head?
I think the pill is passive RFID device so the car has to be introduced to the pill, they flirt, date and if compatible go home and get snuggie under the covers together.
The circuit board is an active player with a rolling code, gathering no moss, like your garage door opener.
The board and car get introduced exchange numbers, flirt, get intimate, then the board goes away until the next time they intimately exchange numbers...
Until one of them gets in a snit over something and they stop talking.
Then you get to bring them to the councilor (dealer) and pay $$$ to try to get them to patch things up..
Resoldering does not always fix the board.
I'm an electrical engineer and your explanation and response was so great! Rolling code gathering no moss!!
Awesome down-to-earth description, good stuff.
Thank you,
I used to be an engineer, They never let me run the train, but just let the damn thing jump the tracks then see who catches hell.
I retired a few years ago.
Of course you can.
Does your key only have one button also?
What year is the car? I did not know 996 came with one button. It might not work, anyone??
Call the folks at Sunset [phone removed] and see if the 911 head uses a compatible frequency. I don't think the replacement 911 case will line up with a one button circuit board.
Post a pic of your key head.
I forgot that 99s have a frunk cable so no 2nd frunk button. If the standard key head guts (post #15) can be changed into the fancy 911 covers, looks like you have to turn the board 180 degres or the blade exits 180 degrees opposite. (Marc help here pls??)
Your one button head has the alarm button in the same position as the STD head alarm button so I don't see why not.
You will just have a decorative frunk button.
That is the way I spend most of my life
.
You asked if you could buy a "911" key ( my assumption was that you wanted the pretty new key head with the "911" on it) to replace your one button key.
It looks like the cheapest way to do that is to buy a new “911” plastic head without the guts and put your working existing guts in to the “911” case.
With no pic it was not obvious which one button key head you were referring to.
Look at the pic of the standard two button key heads in post #15. The fat part of the head is where the door button is, above the blade. Your one button key head looks like it has the button in the same position as the standard two button head lock button: that is on the same end as the key blade.
Others have used the new "911" head case (empty key head case), to update the standard two button key to look like the “911” head, by installing the circuit board and "pill" from the standard two button head in to the new, improved "911" case. The new, improved case has the key blade exit from the opposite end look at post #20. If the standard key guts can be put into the “911” case and work yours should fit also.
