Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have since changed my exhaust system and the same C4S mufflers are now on my friends MK2 (2004) C2.
Leading evidence: 'Replace exhaust system and the same c4s mufflers are now' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'muffler' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend darren fister and his fister ds' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Today I removed the muffler and ran the car without it and the buzzing is gone.

I found a set of good used cats and installed them but the buzzing persisted.

I had heard also that Porsche used a different mounting bracket on later cars, and the parts man I spoke with tells me that each of the part numbers described above have been superseded for reasons unknown.
Use stethoscope and long story short - it's the mufler

I also used a stethoscope and long story short - it's the mufler.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OK - my right side muffler is buzzing when I make 2000 rpm. This started right after an especially sound whipping session during the summer. Absolutely worth it by the way.
The sordid tale is that I thought it was the muffler, but then I was led to believe it was actually the cat. I found a set of good used cats and installed them but the buzzing persisted. Today I removed the muffler and ran the car without it and the buzzing is gone. I then put the muffler back on without the tip, and it's still buzzing. I also used a stethoscope and long story short - it's the mufler.
So I found a set of take off mufflers in FL but they carry the part number 996.111.131.64 and 996 111.132.64.
The parts man says that part number belongs to the 996 C4S, year not specified.
My muffler is stamped 96.111.131.57 (the left side must be 996.111.132.57 because that's Porsche's numbering convention)
My car is a 2002 996 C2.
The parts guy says he thought the C4S mufflers were louder, but that in itself doesn't bother me. It can be noted that the PSE mufflers have a different part number so that red herring need not be considered.
The obvious question is will they fit?
The C4S is of course a wider car, so it's possible that the mufflers won't fit my skinny *** car. Unlikely but possible.
I had heard also that Porsche used a different mounting bracket on later cars, and the parts man I spoke with tells me that each of the part numbers described above have been superseded for reasons unknown. If the mounting points were different that would be a problem. I should have asked if the mufflers came with brackets, I'm assuming they don't.
So - that's the question....will C4S mufflers fit my C2?
I gave away a set last year. I am sure someone will help ya out. They should be the same. I got a set of GHL's from a guy a long while back for my first 4S and they were from a C2. They fit just fine.
I did the PSE mod on mine and am thinking about gutt'ing them as well. I did that on my 00 C2 and they sounded really good (no I don't have a sound clip).
Someone help Jasper out here. THAT is the spirit of Renn. And your wife will love you for cleaning out the "Parts of stuff you keep around"
Good luck J

OH Jasper...dude, why would you drive at 2000 rpm, just gas it till the noise goes away!!
seriously, call Fister-D and just do it, you know EVERYONE says they are awesome - get on the band wagon
OIC there is a question, yes c4 will fit c2, but not the tips and there are several flavors of tips which might make the outlet on the ones in question be differant enough that your tips wont work and you would have to buy differant C2 tips... not 100% but a possibility -
call fister D
Thanks for that but then question in my mind then is why the different part numbers?
After a bit of posting, reading and thinking I believe the issue will be with how my tips will line up with the cutouts in my bumper. It does make sense that the cutouts on the C4S could be wider apart than on my C2, nd in that case the angle of the downpipes would be different.
Have you actually physically fit a set of C4S mufflers on a narrow body car ?
Thanks
I sold a set of my old C4S mufflers to the owner of a narrow body car for a PSE hack, and they are installed in that car now. There were no issues to my knowledge.
Yes. As stated above - the mufflers are the same! A C4S muffler will fit a C2; the tips/exit tubes are different (which are a separate part from the muffler itself).
There is no difference and no modifications required. I put a set of 2003 C4S 3.6l mufflers on my MK1 3.4l and they fit perfectly. I had to use my original tips though because the MK2 bumper has wider cutouts. I have since changed my exhaust system and the same C4S mufflers are now on my friends MK2 (2004) C2. No problem. Bolt right in with stock tips. The part number might be different but the sizing, pipes, etc., is perfect fit.
Jasper - I had the exact same problem you had with the muffler. But, I learned from my technician that the high revs that I'm achieving on the track is accelerating the deterioration of the mufflers on my car.
Also, if you're interested in OEM mufflers with by-pass pipes, I highly recommend Darren Fister and his Fister Ds. I installed them on my 996, and the sound is addictive. I just took the car on the track today, and it made an amazing sound under full throttle, thanks to my Fister Ds.
In addition, the Fister Ds are extremely affordable.
Search on Rennlist, and you can find all of his contact info.
Hope this helps.

I bought a set of 3.4 cans from a fellow Rennlister for the purpose of doing the Fister D mod. I just sent them off to Darin, so if anyone is interested in my stock set when they come off the car (38k miles), make me an offer.
