Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I suppose the band could could crack the housing if I was dumb about it (entrely possible actually), but really, changing the oil on this car was about the easiest job I've ever done.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When I changed mine, I borrowed this real simple looking tool from my neighbor. It looks like a bike chain on a stick basically but worked extremely well...
The best oil filter wrench for a 996 that money can buy is the #7 Super Graphite oil filter wrench available at Pep Boys, Kragen, Wallmart, etc. It is available for about $4.95. ($4,964.83 CDN)
I have one of these for each of my cars, and they have been working flawlessly for over 10 years. They are made of the same stuff the Oil filter canister is made of.
Nope - doesn't fit. For the record, I measured a tool my mechanic had and it 14 flats and was 74.25 mm across. He claimed it fit a little loose, so presumably a 74 mm tool would fit exactly right. The #9 tool I bought was 73 mm across, and was - of course - too small.
I ultimately had *NO* problem removig the housing using one of those band type oil filter tools though. I suppose the band could could crack the housing if I was dumb about it (entrely possible actually), but really, changing the oil on this car was about the easiest job I've ever done.
BTW - I used 5W50 Mobil1. That's all they had at Canadian Tire, and summer is after all upon us. For the winter I'm going to switch to a 0W oil.
