Once the automatic climate control system has cooled the cabin, overall, to closely nearby your setpoint it will not only begin to lower the blower speed, it will also change, increase, the proportion of the internal system airflow that is to be REHEATED via passing through the HOT heater core in order to provide only MODERATE cool, coolish, outlet airflow.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mine doesnt seem to get very cold.. In fact not very cool at all.. It is cooler than outside temp but not by much.. Maybe time for a recharge? What do you think? I can find nothing in any of the service records that say anything about the AC... So it may just be time.

POST 2Original post

I threw a bottle in mine and it got colder then I got spoiled and want colder than colder.....uh yah. I forget who warned/reminded me the low pressure side reading doesn't mean the high pressure side isn't getting too high in pressure. So it might be best to have an a/c tech who can monitor the pressures of both sides do the top it off just right. The warning/reminder included the info of his hose popping on him. About a month ago I reminded you guys it best to have the a/c checked before the beauty days arrive. Get it done now or......hmmmm maybe best not to service the a/c because as soon as you do the clear hot days will be replaced by rainy weekends PS since some of the bottles of 134A includes a pressure gauge its easy to think only low pressure side pressures. Be carefull because the high pressure it what goes pop.

POST 3Original post

Just had them recharge and he said it held suction for at least an hour and was showing 48 degrees coming out so hopefully good for summer months.

POST 5Original post

Mine will turn your cojones blue. I would do the proper method of evac, holding vacuum, then re-charge. If you have to charge your system, then it might have a leak or absorbed moisture. Evacuating the system will remove that moisture. AutoZone will loan out R134 vacuum pumps and manifold gauges and it's not real hard to do. There's an abundance of DIY on google and explains how AC systems work. ///Michae

POST 6Original post

I find the foot well vents are much cooler than the center and window vents. It's probably just the limited space down there but I like to turn them off or my legs freeze and my head is sweating. Of course it is a perpetual 75 degrees here in So. Cal. so it's not that big of issue.

POST 7Original post

Summers here often get over 100F and the AC works great, on a long ride it gets too cold and I have to turn the temp up to keep comfortable.

POST 8Original post

Summers over 100f in texas and a/c blows cold eight years later with no service needed...fingers crossed.

Most likely. System needs to be evacuated, tested for leaks, and then refilled with refrigerant and fresh compressor oil. The amount of oil is pretty critical too. Just adding refrigerant may result in system being too full which is not the best thing for it. A/C should blow pretty cold but exhaust temperature depends upon ambient. Somewhere I came across a chart that gave ambient and exhaust temperature. IIRC at 25C exhaust temperature should be around 4C to 6C. This with A/C set to max cool with recirculate selected and temperature measured at center dash vents. IIRC the car should not have been heat soaked beforehand. IOWs, don't run test after car has sat in hot sun for hours. Added: Forgot to mention my 02 Boxster's AC still can chill cabin right down after 8+ years of use (never been recharged either) and ditto for the used 03 Turbo I bought. Be sure the cabin air filter is fresh. Some owners never bother changing these and they can get quite full of stuff and block air flow. Stink too. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 10Original post

Make sure that both high speed fans are working when the air is on.

POST 11Original post

I can see the volts reading on the dash read lower when I run a/c. I'm debating heading off a major bummer and just replace the battery since it's the one that came with the car so I don't know when it goes out. The battery sure does seem weak reacting to fans coming on like that. It drops from 14 or so to 13 pretty quick. I was running a/c and full on cranking stereo a while back and it sure sucked some amps and volts down. Darn battery does weak starts right after cruising with heavy metal and such. Bad bad bad doggy.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the imputs.... Ill take it over to the local and see what they can do

POST 13Original post

Was 92 here yesterday. Max cool center vents at idle produce 46 degree temp. My car is black/ black and even on the hottest of days will bring cabin temps down faster and blows cooler than any other vehicle I've ever owned. Macster is right about pollen filter. I changed mine when I bought the car. Before swap it was blowing like an asthmatic thru a straw compared to now plus stinky.

Modern day automatic climate control systems, mostly the ones in which you set the actual temperature, overall CABIN temperature, you desire, will not always provide what you consider "cool" airflow even with a HOT cabin, and certainly not once the cabin is cooled to the temperature setpoint or closely nearby. Keep in mind that cool and dry airflow directly, directed, to your face and upper body can be seriously discomforting. So even though your 996's HVAC could easily supply COLD, sub-40F airflow it will NEVER do that in automatic mode. The only way to get the COLDEST airflow the system has the capability to supply is to turn the temperature setpoint to the lowest possible setting, turn the blower speed to minimum, and use the recirculate mode ONLY. If you want even colder airflow you will need to modify the heater core coolant flow system. Add a manual shutoff valve in the coolant line to the heater core such that the heater core isn't continuous heated to the 190F engine operating temperature. COMFORT, human COMFORT. At the same time it will begin to OPEN the other two HVAC airflow outlets, footwell and defrost(***) so as to more evenly distribute the system airflow and further avoid front passenger discomfort. The system also has a SUN light radiation sensor so the level of cooling can be adjusted accordingly. *** A chilled windshield interior surface can prove to be hazardous in certain low light, dusk, and humid conditions. With the windshield being continuously CHILLED via system airflow and if the humidity is fairly high the exterior windshield surface will begin to fog over. Now really a problem if it is quickly obvious but in low light conditions, just after sunset say, you might think it is simply getting darker and darker. So it is BEST to manually close the defrost airflow outlets when the HVAC system is definitely operating in cooling mode. Porsche dealers have apparently been instructed to NOT write up service writers (tear up and discard if already written) for this situation, "operating as designed", while VW has provided a firmware revison for their version of the Cayenne.

The autoclimate system will provide, can provide very cold air. The test for proper A/C function gives several steps some of which are: Close doors window and top. Insert temp probe into center vent. Measure ambient temperature. Open all dashboard vents. Switch ignition on. Press re-circulate button. Set temp control to max cooling. Switch fresh-air blower to stage 4. Start engine. Operate A/C while engine idling. Set idle speed to 2K at time of temp measurement start. At 15C temp should be between 3C and 6C. At 20C between 3.5C and 6.5C. At 25C center vent air temp should be between 4C and 7C. And at 30C between 4.5C to 7.5C. I've occasionally encountered severe high ambient temperature and had to drop the temp setting to 70F vs. leaving it at 72F or even lower to 68F if I'm sitting on the sunny side of the car while driving. And once I remember in extremely hot conditions I've simply lowered the temp setting manually to max cooling and set the cabin fan speed for whatever comfort I required. Rare though. I drove my 03 Turbo last June in 111F temps and left the A/C set to auto and its temp setting at 72F the whole time and was just as comfortable as I could be. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 16Original post

Colder than a witches ti&! So far I haven't had to do anything but turn it on when needed.

POST 17Original post

The 996 (at least mine) has had the best air conditioning of all the new cars I have bought - besting my 99 Honda Civic Si, 05 WRX STi, G37 coupe. The 996 is much cooler and it blows like a hurricane - especially when turning the recirc on.
