I'm also trying to figure out if I should get the paintless dent repair guy a go and fix the small door dings.

I hope you get $24k for yours, then I'll sell mine and replace with a newer 911.

And so it starts, after seeing the cover of Sport Classic Porsche and the fact that mines running top notch......
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Damn, living on my own and I'm still getting good luck handouts.
After having the car up on jacks for the first half of the year (which I had fun doing BTW) And now the car sitting here undriven while I'm hanging out at the house or doing more things with the kids since the wife started working.... In additon to wanting to start AX, but it never seems to happen...
I've gotten the bug to build an RSR with my boy (11). He's constantly asking about cars I'm looking at on Pelican and he wants to build one together. So it looks like I'm going to get the final parts I need to make this car an attractive sell....
Brake pads, still on order.
And new rear tires.
Then... well....it looks like I might be going air cooled.....

?
I said I'd never sell her too but I can't justify two toys, let alone the space issues with two...
I'll have to revisit this post in 6 months.
everyday I look at the older cars in the shop, track prepped or otherwise. I hear those tuned motors and look at those simple interiors and think - "SOMEDAY!!"
I know which dirrection I am heading and why....nothing against the newer cars, they have their own lure... its just not as strong for me - the cars like Ed H - man, those are it for me
Since he's eleven I don't know how long it would be before he could enjoy it. I think the journey is what I'm looking for and not necessarily the destination. Albiet the destination would be pretty sweet when I get there.
Hang on a minute....didn't you sell yours for a train ride? In a couple years you'll be on this path Arnee.
I'll let you know. I'm waiting for some tires that I got a smoking deal on. The car will come with two sets of PS2 rears, unmounted since the other tires are almost done.
I'm also trying to figure out if I should get the paintless dent repair guy a go and fix the small door dings.
A few weeks ago I was perusing the Pelican Classifieds and came across this gem. It's exactly what I'm looking at building. Not a RSR but more of a 911S-T/cafe racer type. It even has the wheels I was thinking of. Kind of eerie how close it is to what I was imagining. The only difference is the way he painted the rear bumper.
Just curious how if you don't have enough time to drive your current car, or take a weekend morning to go to an AX, how are you going to pull off an building an RSR tribute car? Depending where you start, that's a $50K (or more) and hundreds of hours of time. Not sure how handy you are or how much would be farmed out, but realistically, you are better of trying to plan free time to enjoy what you already have.
Since the weekdays are filled with work and the weekends are spent at home with the family. It's easier for me to tinker on a car at home then take the time to AX. Like I said before, when the car was down and I was having fun working on it. Now that it's running again, I'm doing more stuff with my kids. Instead of spending money on insurance, registration for a car that I use maybe a couple hours a week, I can put it into building a car. I'm not looking at getting it done in one-two years. My son is 11. I've got 5 years of time.
I plan on doing most of the work except for paint and other critical jobs that I would think would be better off outsourced. It's a hobby I'm not building it to use for a DD.
I certainly can understand the desire to do what you propose. As you comb the Pelican fro sale ads though, its easy to find dozens of "aborted projects", mostly to being unprepared for how long they might take. Not that it will happen to you, of course, but what if 2 years in, your son finds a passion for something else.. drums.. girls.. etc.. then its your project. Kind of like when the "family" wants a dog and the kids claim they will walk him everyday.. and you get to be the one walking, feeding, caring for him etc.
While it is no doubt against forum etiquette, I just thought you should take a step back and realize how large a potential project like this is and its corresponding time commitment. Heck, I just noticed your 996 is just as old as your son. Maybe he'd rather get to drive "dads old 911" in 5-6 years (esp since it has heat, ac, etc) vs a 40 year old car.
No I understand and appreciate the advice (even if you were a dick about it. JK). As a father of three, I know the rules regarding children's interests in their hobbies and the life span of a particular hobby. Even if he did lose interest, it's more my hobby with him learning and helping. I want him to have something thing I didn't when I was younger and I think it's a great tool for a guy(or girl) to understand how machines work and what they require to keep them running. If I knew what I knew now, I wouldn't have grenade-d my first cars engine when I was 18.
As for pets, yes two dogs and a tortoise, and depending on the season, frogs, insects, spiders...... It's his job and he's (almost) independent on caring for them.
If he's not interested in it in five years so be it. I don't have plans to abandon the project once started, and I'm not in a rush to finish it.
As for the 996, yes he's wanted to drive it and it has a lot of creature comforts but (excluding this week) the weather here is pretty mild and since it's a fun car it's only going to be driven when it's nice out. I would trust him driving it but my girls? Yikes! You should see how they drive at the karting place! They are getting a Jetta TDI with 10psi in the tires.
Sorry, but I think most of us here are old enough to make decisions without someone questioning them or giving unsolicited advice.
Good luck with it, Ed.
Don't you tell me good luck. I don't need your luck.
Damn, living on my own and I'm still getting good luck handouts. Haven't you heard of proper forum good luck etiquette?
And so it starts, after seeing the cover of Sport Classic Porsche and the fact that mines running top notch...... I'm evaluating price.....
Around here same mileage is running between $21-24K no mention of new brakes, clutch, updated clutch lever, and IMS upgrade in those lists.....
What should I sell for? I'll post the pics that I'll put up. I'll take them at the winery or near the hills next to the house.....
