They used to run about $1300/pr but aren't self leveling like the factory installed ones but just as bright.

This was my understanding of the IMS issue all along until the last couple of years when I'm hearing all this about changing IMS bearings on all 996s regardless of years.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All I've just purchased my first 911. '99 Cab in triple black, full leather, 95K km, new motor at 80K km in 2006. i have some questions and look forward to any input you can offer. 1. i've seen a couple of windscreens for sale. Are they worth having? 2. Is the clear plastic bra better than a regular old school bra (thats bound to draw at least one crack)? 3. Would the replacement motor be subject to the same IMS risks? 4. I've also seen a zenon light kit on ebay for the 996. The lights are accompanied by a module/controller. Does that sound like something that can be installed reasonably easy by a mechanically inclined sort? I'm glad to be part of the club.

Welcome Fivefasts...pics will go far with answers to your ques.

POST 5Original post

Welcome. My wndscreen was the first thing I bought and it works great. 100% worth the price.

POST 6Original post

Windscreen is GREAT!! They are sometimes on this list and often on Craig's List or eBay.... I recall I paid 100.00 for mine in a case - Like New! Prior Owner sold car years before and found it cleaning out his garage... That the only answer you may get without posting pics....

POST 7Original post

Welcome and Hello from Delta! I love my windscreen. Have seen a few used ones for sale quite reasonably.

POST 9Original post

Huh... Maybe I will have to pull the ole windscreen out of it's hiding place in the garage and see what kind of difference it makes besides taking up room in the already too small frunk of my C4... either that or I can feel a FS post for a barely (or maybe not even) used windscreen coming up!

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I understand the picture thing. My wife just walked by the computer while i was downloading my avtar pic from my iphone. She referred to it as car ****. I guess it is. My name is Steve. I'm addicted to pictures of Porsche cars. Can i add other pics to the thread?

POST 13Original post

Yah attachments work as pictures. Manageable at the bottom of your control console. You will see jpgs listed as a type of of file when doing an attachement with the size limits listed also. I think a clear bra would be better than material since fiber bras hold stuff and discolor paint underneith besides debri rubbing the paint wrong under there. The lights I really don't think are needed unless you plan to run the autobahn.

POST 14Original post

Steve Welcome, fellow Canuck! To answer your questions # 3 and #4 3. Yes the IMS will exist even with your new engine. While it will incorporate whatever fixes Porsche implemented, the design issues will the IMS will persist. You have undoubtedly seen all the posts about the LN replacement IMS bearing which you could consider. 4. DON'T! If you have halogen headlights, the xenon upgrade will do little for you. The halogen reflectors are not set up for the xenon bulb and will only create a brighter light close to the car and blind oncoming drivers with a diffuse beam patten. The long-distance illumination was very poor. I tried a set and hated them.

POST 15Original post

Welcome 1) I ride motorcycles, I like being outside, I would never use the windstop for myself. My wife on the otherhand thinks it makes the top down experience better. She likes the windows up as well. 2) Clear bras age and yellow and remind me of people that put clear plastic covers on lamp shades. Unlike the older cars, the bumper covers are a somewhat flexable plastic and they don't dent or rust. They can be repainted inexpensively. 3) I had a new motor put in my Cab in '06 and was told it had an updated larger bearing on the larger intermediate shaft. There is still some confusion going on here in my mind re IMS. I was recently told by a 12 year tech at a P dealer that the problem was the shaft breaking and it was upgraded in the 996 mk2. Also all 996 3.4 replacement motors use the larger shaft and bearing. This was my understanding of the IMS issue all along until the last couple of years when I'm hearing all this about changing IMS bearings on all 996s regardless of years. 4) Be careful changing light bulbs as higher wattage and hotter bulbs will cook the lexan lenses and ruin them. The only fix is new OE light units, very costly. Watch for OE Litronic HID light kits which include the whole new unit and ballast. They used to run about $1300/pr but aren't self leveling like the factory installed ones but just as bright.

POST 17Original post

Welcome. Without the self-leveling part of the system you will forever have on coming traffic pizzed off as you bump along the road and every ripple appears to traffic as if you are flashing them. I've looked at these after market kits and ebay stuff and without the motors for self-leveling the headlights it's all a bit Mickey Mouse and Honda Civic_ish. If you could get the full OEM kit at a good price off someone it might be worth it but I 'd rather spend the money somewhere else - just my take on it.

POST 18Original post

Welcome. Question for the larger audience: Do the 3.4 replacements come with a bearing that is unserviceable like the replacement 3.6s?

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
