I barely use my brakes at all when coasting to a stop (in gear and push in the clutch at the last moment).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hopefully no question is too silly to ask here. I have a ’99 996 with tiptronic. Coming from a ’15 Lexus ES350 (which is smooth almost to the point of being too boring to drive), and not sure if what I’m experiencing in the 996 is normal or not. When I’m in second gear, going about 20-30km/h and at about 2500RPM (just before the tip shifts into third), if I let off the gas pedal to ‘cruise’ the car has a rapid RPM drop to about 1500-2000rpm and slows down rather rapidly as if I’ve pressed on the brakes. Not to the extent that I jerk forward in the car, but definitely more rapidly instead of ‘cruising on’ like I’m used to in the Lexus. This is especially so if I happen to be on a slight downhill. If I gently release the gas pedal (but still have it pressed down) then the car slows down more smoothly. This happens only when the engine is cold, ie. the first drive of the morning. Doesn’t happen after the car’s been brought up to temperature. Cruises on smoothly almost maintaining the same speed. It also doesn’t happen at higher speeds/when the tip’s been shifted to 3rd gear or higher. But maybe it’s because when the car’s warmed up the tip shifts into third pretty early right at around 2000RPM, so I don't experience 2nd gear in around 2500RPM. The car otherwise pulls fine, accelerates well, and never stalls/stops to the point of engine shutting off. Never had trouble starting the car either. Any idea on what this could be, and whether or not this is just how the car normally behaves? Pic for attention

POST 2Original post

Could just be the differences between the vehicles. Many modern cars will coast when you lift off the throttle, but these older 996s dont really do that. Modern cars cut fuel and then let air into the engine (or stop opening the valves) to reduce pumping losses, but the 996 keeps the throttle plates closed, so it will slow down faster. I have a manual, so I cannot compare to your auto, so hopefully others can join in. I guess it possible, too, that theres a problem with your brake booster, such that the vacuum generated under deceleration overwhelms the booster and actually applies the brakes, but thats a bit far fetched. You can test that out by getting out of the car after a few deceleration attempts and feel the brake rotor to see if its warm.

POST 3Original post

Ohh my...I read the thread title and thought the car is "breaking" when decelerating. Turns out it feels like it is "braking". I would say normal. My method when decelerating is to lift on the throttle and let the engine compression slow me down. I barely use my brakes at all when coasting to a stop (in gear and push in the clutch at the last moment). Maybe your car will just take some time to get used to.

POST 4Original post

I too have a 99 996 tip. I havent noted the behavior in detail, but my car also does engine-braking in the first few minutes of driving, just like yours. I guess it holds the current gear when I release the accelerator rather than shifting up to a higher gear. But whatever is happening it seems like the behavior eases off after 5 minutes or sotypically before the engine has reached peak water temp.

POST 5Original post

You have a couple of different things going on when your car is cold including the viscosity of your engine & transmission oil. One of the methods used by manufactures to help meet emissions is to program AT cars to hold gears longer when cold. This gets the engine temperature up quicker and into the emissions monitoring state. Cold oil in your torque converter will also contribute to the "braking" feel. My guess is the combination of all these things is giving you the sensation you are describing.

Learning something new about this car (and cars in general) every day! Thanks for the helpful replies everyone. Oops, sorry about that typo I'm glad the car is 'braking' and not 'breaking'! I posted the same question on a Facebook group for 996's and it seems like pretty much everyone with a tip is experiencing the same thing! Mine also eases off after a few minutes of driving.

POST 7Original post

I have had my 996 for about 3 years now (2002 cab)......I always fancied a Turbo S.....so I got a 991.2 back in March..... Its everything its cracked up to be and stupid quick. I didn't sell the 996.... because it has a charm the new ones don't. It might be 21 years old now....but I prefer driving it to the newer one and its not super quick by today's standards....but no slow either.... i don't have the same issues mentioned here...but it does do an odd thing.....its tiptronic and I always drive it in auto mode.... if you floor it in auto it immediately goes into manual mode.....and even when you come off the throttle hoping it will calm down and auto change up......it doesn't.... It stays in manual for about a min or so in case you change you mind and need to rewelly it
