Also, have you replaced any brake lights with LEDs?

If you have a manual you'll need to potentially replace the clutch switch.

No problem with having cruise control light on at all times but wonder if there is another issue - not sure if I should replace the new switch again or ?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I got codes for the brake switch, replaced, but cruise control still didn't work.
I noticed my brake lights were intermittent and tracked it down to a faulty brake light switch. Replaced it with a new porsche switch, brake lights worked again. Then when I tried the cruise control and it would not engage, but upon startup the light was illuminated on the dash. Scanned it and a P1574 code came up. The strange part is that if I keep the cruise control on at startup it works just fine and disengages upon braking and using the stalk. The car has a tiptronic so only one switch on the brake. I can clear the code with my scanner and it keeps coming back. No problem with having cruise control light on at all times but wonder if there is another issue - not sure if I should replace the new switch again or ?
You didn't say what year your car is. I looked at the '99 wiring diagram and it shows the brake light switch having a normally closed and a normally open contact. The cruise control get a signal when the brakes are off as well as when they are on. Perhaps the new switch has a bad normally closed (off the brakes) contact. Alternately, maybe there is an adjustment for the up position?
This would be for a 2001 - and I did pull the plunger all the way out on install. not sure I can crawl back under the dash again - very awkward and painful... It worked correctly for a while and then when I wanted to use it would not turn on when pushing the button on the stalk.
If you have a manual you'll need to potentially replace the clutch switch. I had similar issue. I got codes for the brake switch, replaced, but cruise control still didn't work.

Replace the clutch switch. Also check and make sure your wires are not chafing. I found that mine were starting too as they were rubbing on the clutch pedal frame. I gave a 99.
PIWIS can read both the normally open and the normally closed sides of the switch.
Also the evu reads the brake switch through the cluster, so if you have had that apart perhaps the connectors broke.
Check the switch. There is a video on YouTube that shows how to check it with a voltmeter. Also, have you replaced any brake lights with LEDs? If so, try putting the stock bulbs back in, clear the codes and see if that fixes it.
I have switched the rear bulbs for led's with resistors by Adrian lighting - Will check with piwis next time at my indie and see how the switch reads. Think given the choice between better lighting in the rear vs leaving cruise control on will leave it on.
