Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used a fiberglass rod, and once i got someone to turn the key, I tried 4x and never saw any voltage on the top lug.

Leading evidence: 'Use fiberglass rod, and once i got someone' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check other items people have provided' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Have someone turn ignition to start position while you check for voltage.

There is no need to remove air box to check voltage at starter.

Search for the replacing the heavy guage starter/alt wire.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My '99 cab has had intermittent no crank issues, It seems like it gets crankier the colder it gets outside. I replaced the ignition switch hoping my problem would go away. Looming through the service history, this car has had starters and ignition switches before, so I am assuming there is a lingering problem and the poor previous owner was paying to swap parts and pray.
With this being a cab, and it seemingly getting crank when it gets colder, I made an educated guess that maybe the immobilizer had gotten wet and this was the source of my problems. Upon pulling the immobilizer, I found no signs of moisture or corrosion. So I would politely ask a few questions.
1. will the immobilizer cause a no crank? or will it crank and not start?
2. is there a reset that I need to do now that the immobilizer has been removed and re-installed?
3 can I get a wiring Diagram of the start circuit to further troubleshoot?
4 Any other ideas? I suspect maybe a start relay? but how common do those fail? Being a cab, id have to pull my hard top and then put the convertible top in service mode.
When turning your ignition switch to the start position you should get voltage at terminal 51 on the back of the starter.
Confirm that then troubleshoot from there.
sorry that would be terminal 50 at the back of starter. Where the two yellow wires attach.
Immibilizer issue would be a no crank.
Search for the replacing the heavy guage starter/alt wire. They r known to go bad.
Wiring diagrams r easy to read frim a Bentley Manual. U may want to order one.
Are you getting a " no start' ? a " no crank" ? or a " not even an attempt to crank"? it makes a big difference in where I would start.....
If you are getting a "no attempt to crank" I would start by checking the clutch switch and also the "antenna" ( RFID antenna) ..that surrounds the ignition switch and make sure the 2 little wires are secure...
lol...yea, and I can't tell if your starter is spining or not even trying....or if it is spinning fast just not starting...lol
The Immo will keep it from doing anything, but don't start there...
no spinny noise and no solenoid click, also no voltage drop.
I am not looking forward to pulling the airbox and what ever else just to get a voltage tester on the starter.
An oldie, but goodie, is to check your main battery power cables, the Y cable, and any ground straps on your car. If there are any suspect-looking cables, connections, or corrosions, many 996 owners have replaced these cables.
Im not saying you should start here, I would start with checking the other items people have provided already, but I would add to the bottom of the list.
There is no need to remove air box to check voltage at starter. There is ample space between oil fill tube and power steering pump.
All you need is a DVOM and a three foot piece of 1/4 dowel rod from Home Depot or the like.
Tape the positive probe to end of dowel and feed forward to the back of starter. I suggest removing
Y cable from jump point. Have someone turn ignition to start position while you check for voltage.
Its a CAB, its not under the back seat, I have to remove the hard top, store it somewere, then raise the top into service mode and get under the back of the top.
I used a fiberglass rod, and once i got someone to turn the key, I tried 4x and never saw any voltage on the top lug. I went to start pulling the hard top.... I think I have made the immobilizer very mad... the windows will not got down and, my fob will unlock the car but not lock it. I am not seeing how this is tied into the starter circuit, but I also do not see the clutch switch in the circuit... This takes me back to the keys, immobilizer...
Think the next step is to jumper out the clutch safety switch.
just a friendly reminder that terminal 50 on the starter is the small threaded post at around the 4:00 position.
